  • Was suprised
For a long time I was wanting to learn to play the Oboe but was nervous trying to find one that would be a good fit. I didn't really want to buy a used one and most professional one's were very expensive new. When I found this one on Amazon I was worried that it wouldn't be that good of an instrument but I was pleasantly surprised. This Oboe was worth the money paid. It came in great shape and was able to be played right out of the box, something many oboes can't do. I felt that the key mechanism was more sturdy than some "professional" instruments I played around with at the music store. This lead me to feel that I wouldn't have to take this in to be adjusted as often as others. The tone isn't as warm as it could be if the body was made from wood but that's where they were able to keep the price down. It's still a beautiful and rich tone. I also feel that the durability is great for kids learning to play in school, this could take a few drops without having to pay someone a lot of money to fix. Sadly I decided to switch to playing the flute instead but if anytime in the future I want to pick the oboe back up this is going to be my go to to start! ... show more

  • Eh
Not the best instrument, but an okay beginner oboe. Problems arose with the pads, which had to be repaired, which I wasn’t expecting from a brand new instrument. Too late to return so we’re stuck with it.

  • Dead keys
Brand new right out of the box the first two keys are dead. No spring activity and it's not made of wood.

  • Great for the price
Definitely not professional but great for someone starting or wanting to pick it up as a hobby without breaking the bank. Played right out of the box. The reed that came with it was WAY too hard. I recommend shaving it with a razor if you know how, or order some different ones along with it.

  • Not bad to try the oboe.
You have to consider what you are getting with this. This is a Chinese made clone sold by different brand names for up to $3,000.00 depending where you look. That doesn't mean it's worth 3000.00. It isn't. But 300? There are a couple ways to get into oboe playing. Get a student rental which is extremely expensive and may actually be this oboe that you will end up paying thousands for. Another option is to grab a used oboe from a popular auction website, likely an old selmer student model. But you will still pay about 300.00 and will not get the full conservatory features of this oboe. Plus you never know the condition of a used oboe until you play it. That said, the old selmers were designed to be tough and they are. Another option is to spend between 4,000 and 8,000 real dollars on a new Yamaha. Great if you can afford that, but I personally think Yamaha oboes are overrated. I wouldn't buy one. Now this oboe comes to you in playable condition. The reed must be scraped. I read a lot of reviews where they say the reed is terrible. It is. But you have to shape any new reed to make it work well. That is something you need to learn. Another reviewer said theirs stopped playing after a week and that the wire on the lower joint "broke". No. It didn't. It slipped off its post. Happened to me too. Easy fix. If it happens again I will file a deeper groove to hold it. That is kind of what you can expect. It's an oboe for 300.00. It plays, but is not a rock solid school rental like a selmer. You probably should not buy this for kids. It's somewhat fragile compared to other brands, but again. 300.00. I am glad I bought mine but now I wish I had gotten a SONG brand which seems to be a different maker and a step up from this for the same price. If you have ever played a reed instrument you should be able to manage with this for at least the first year of learning. ... show more

  • Was hoping it would go better
I really wanted to give this a better review, but alas, cannot. I tried two of these. The first played fine upon opening, a bit of squeakiness and pitch issues (which can also be attributed to my being a beginner). I practiced every day upon receipt. For about 10 days or so, my playing got better, but then the low C, B, and Bb started having issues. They would come out an octave higher. The oboe wasn't broken or damaged in any way, so I couldn't tell what was wrong. So I did a return/replacement. When I received the second one, I could tell upon opening that the contents in the case had shifted. I tried playing that same day, and the low B key had issues in that it would not raise up fully upon releasing the lever that controls it. So the low C would then sound a lot like a low B. I could tell something was off with the mechanism-and I had just opened it brand new out of the box (plastic wrap and all). Thus, I returned for a refund. Was hoping it would go better, but will have to seek out an oboe elsewhere. Also, the reed, made of cane, is too hard for a beginner. I bought a medium-soft plastic reed separately, and that worked much better. Not sure why gloves are included, or why the screwdriver looks a bit too large for the tiny screws. The cleaning rag, while good to have, is also too big to pull the whole way through the middle and upper joints-it gets stuck. At least the cork caps and the cork grease are useful additions, though even with the grease, the cork ends were still rather tough to twist during assembly. Oh well-live and learn. Maybe I just got lemons, and this brand can actually play well-but I didn’t have that experience. ... show more
