Description

Maintain your knife blades with this sharpener from Global. Using this ceramic rod, you can hone any knife and give it a finer edge than with traditional sharpening rods. You can comfortably use the steel handle to hone knife edges and feel safe because this rod has a finger guard. Use the knives sharpened by this honing rod to make slicing heavy dishes such as fruit tarts or slicing potatoes for French fries. This ceramic rod is sure to last a long time and can easily be maintained with just a hand wash and drying. Although steels often are touted as sharpening tools, few actually sharpen knife blades, but they do perform the vital task of realigning, or resetting, edges, which bend when contacting a cutting surface or other hard object. Because this tool's chrome/vanadium stainless-steel rod contains hundreds of thousands of diamond particles, it's hard enough to somewhat sharpen a blade. Using this steel won't replace a professional sharpening job, which proceeds from coarse grinding to ever-finer grinding at tightly controlled angles. However, it will lengthen intervals between sharpenings better than a steel without diamonds because it accomplishes the final task of a professional sharpening, which is polishing the edge to a fine point. Exceptionally well made, this tool's rod has a solid core and has been plated with hard chrome for additional resistance to abrasion and to extend its life. Because the rod is a 3/4-inch-wide oval, it exposes more surface and works quicker than a cylindrical rod. Like Global's signature knife handles, the steel's handle is molded for comfort and dimpled for a safe grip. The rule is that a steel should be at least as long as the knife blade being drawn across it, and this steel's 10-inch rod is long enough for most household knives. --Fred Brack

  • Might be the best, but...
This diamond sharpening steel is suitable for emergency sharpening. Two or three gentle passes is all you need to turn a hopeless instrument back into something that will cut again. However, If you're passionate about sharp cutlery and ninja-like efficiency, this product may not please you. After two years of periodic use, I have a few complaints: 1) I might have preferred a slightly finer grit abrasive, or several sharpening steels of different grits. 2) The tool is neither magnetic, nor does it have a hole suitable for hanging. 3) When my knife begins to dull slightly, I hesitate to use this sharpening steel. My hesitation before using this sharpening steel is that the coarse grit will scratch and serrate the blade edge. Thus ultimately creating more work when I get out my water stones. Obviously, I prefer my knives terrifyingly-sharp. If you're comfortable using more force when you cut, or using a sawing motion, then this steel will be all you ever need in life to be happy. I wish I could keep this tool on my magnetic cutlery retainer, along with my knives and spatulas, but it is weakly magnetic. There is no lanyard hole, either, so simple hooks and nails are not an option. If I had it to do all over again, I would still buy this sharpening steel. If you're in the middle of food preparation and you accidentally drop your knife or roll the edge over, then this sharpening steel is a life saver. But I can imagine some customers regretting this purchase. This is a good tool. For all I know, it might even be the best in the world of its kind. In my opinion, though, it is only a 3-star or 4-star product. Hopefully, future generations will improve upon it. ... show more

  • Serious Honer
I purchased this honer for my husband. I recently purchsed for him a 7 piece Global knife set & wanted to protect my investment!! This honer is the best he has ever used. The diamond edge really brings the tiny nicks back in line. He is not a chef, but a serious foodie/home cook. He now uses the honer as needed and it keeps the sharpness at its best. So far everything Global has proven to be the best quality and a good investment (and when you accidently cut yourself with one of their knives, as I did the other day, the cut is clean & heals quickly). ... show more

Make sure your angles are right when you use this steel or it will scratch the sh×× out of your blade. Passed a stamped blade a couple times and worked as if I just took it off an 8000 grit stone.

Awesome. Sharpens mush better than just honing bar.

This is so worth it. I used my, foolishly, Global chef knife on a stainless surface and flattened out the blade. After literally two passes on each side with this rod, my knife was sharper than ever before. This could essentially replace the whetstone.

  • A good sharpening rod
A good sharpening rod. Not a great one. Better than most, maybe not quite good enough to justify the price point. Ultimately, nothing can replace stone-sharpening.
