Installed this product on a fence post - my horses have not yet used it. I do not believe it is long enough nor a sense of scratchy enough to aid in their scratches. Just little rubber nubs. Also, while installing, I noticed the holes were too big for the screws provided. They kept popping out/over the screw. But leaving the screw slightly unscrewed would end up in a horse catching a scratch to the eye. The screws need a type of rubber/softer washer to go with it. Overall, would not buy again.
