No, the GIGABYTE Z790 AORUS Elite AX supports only DDR5 RAM. This motherboard is designed to take advantage of the faster and more efficient DDR5 memory, which provides improved performance over DDR4, especially for gaming and intensive applications.

The GIGABYTE Z790 AORUS Elite AX is equipped with Intel WiFi 6E for wireless connectivity and a 2.5GbE LAN port for wired connections. 🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The motherboard under review receives generally high praise for its performance, ease of setup, and aesthetics, offering a good base for both experienced builders and newcomers. Users appreciate the seamless BIOS update process, functional software for drivers and RGB control, and excellent compatibility with recent GPUs and CPUs. However, some users encountered difficulties with BIOS settings, peripheral compatibility, and audio performance, suggesting there may be variability in user experience based on specific needs and hardware configurations.

Pros

  • 🔧 Easy setup and clear labeling, making it user-friendly for first-time builders.
  • 💾 Seamless BIOS updates and functional software for drivers and RGB control.
  • 📡 Onboard WiFi offers significant speed improvements over USB alternatives.
  • 💼 Excellent compatibility with recent GPUs, CPUs, and DDR5 support.
  • 🖥 Beautiful aesthetics that complement various build themes.

Cons

  • 🔇 Audio performance is basic and may not meet the needs of users working with audio editing, streaming, or gaming.
  • 🔄 BIOS can be finicky, with some users reporting difficulties in tweaking settings and encountering unintuitive post beep codes.
  • 🧰 Peripheral compatibility issues, requiring very new monitors or keyboards for optimal functionality.
  • 👾 Some users reported network driver issues, leading to stuttering and unstable connections.
  • 📦 Complaints about the lack of a physical manual, MOBO speaker, or driver CD in the box.

Should I Buy It?

If you value ease of setup, aesthetics, and plan on using recent GPUs/CPUs with DDR5, this motherboard is a strong contender. However, if audio performance and peripheral compatibility are paramount to your build, or if you are not comfortable troubleshooting potential BIOS and driver issues, you might want to consider other options or be prepared for potential workarounds.

  • Top Notch quality
Style: Z790 AORUS ELITE AX DDR4
Everything works like a charm out of the box. Gigabyte software (GGC) works perfect, downloaded in an instant, Even updating bios with it was a breeze. Beautiful board. Built it for my brother. Way better than my Strix motherboard ( Asus armoury crate is pure crap)

  • Great board, little pricey
Style: Z790 AORUS ELITE X WIFI7
I really enjoyed building onto the board, limited USB in the rear compared to others for the price but enough to handle everything I needed with a few spares. As others have said, NO wifi and had some issues with windows install reading the ethernet until I was able to bypass the network restrictions and install windows and once I was able to get updates the built in Wifi for the board works great. Shame they don't have this up & running from the start, would make things easier, especially when paying a premium for the updated wifi-7. Outside of that the updated BIOS is easier on the eyes and easy to navigate through even in advance mode. I have had this now for a few weeks and no weird crashes I could easily boost my memory modules to their maximum speed with XMP and I'm using this with I7-13700k and has been stable. I mostly just play video games on my spare time. ... show more

  • Some work needed but worked well in the end
Style: Z790 AORUS ELITE AX
At first i didnt upgrade the BIOS as that can always cause problems. But the GPU and M2 980 samsung i had, was not recognized in the bios so didnt have a choice but to update. Ran the update through ok and it rebooted like 5 or 6 times, then went dark screen. Left it for a long while and nothing. So rest and removed flashdrive. boot back to bios and screen keeps flashing blank, uh oh, other than that it says it updated. I know, i will reflash it !!! Hold on there, not so easy, go through same process QFLASH and says cannot read file ! Deleted files and recopied, same thing ! ended up finding an article that says have to reformat the drive each time, so did, recopied file and QFLASH read files and reapplied. This time took just a few minutes and booted back to BIOS menu. Phew! Now the 7900XT and the 980 and recognized and all good to go. Have to say the onboard wifi is sweet, coming from a USB variety that gave me 40-50mb on 5G now on 500mb. Using 7900XT, 14700K ... show more

  • Two boards, both bad w/i7-14700K
Style: Z790 AORUS ELITE AX DDR4
I recently rebuilt my system with an Z790 AORUS Master and i7-14700KF. It's been great after flashing the BIOS to work with a 14th gen processor--Q Flash+ works fine. I decided to upgrade my wife's PC (she's not a power user) with the same CPU on a Z790 AORUS Elite AX DDR4, re-using the DRAM from my previous machine. Installed only the CPU, 1 DRAM, and a video card, system would not POST/boot, ending with a VGA fault light and no video. Flashed the BIOS to the latest version, same result. Used 3 different video cards, 3 PSUs, different DRAM, same result. Gigabyte tech support agreed that it was either the board or the CPU and suggested I return the board. Amazon replaced it immediately and...same problem. So I replaced the CPU, this time with the i7-14700K (not KF) to eliminate the video card during troubleshooting. Same problems, and it stumped the Gigabyte tech support as well. I've returned it and will use a different model and DDR5 memory. My suspicion: this is probably a good board, but the latest BIOS (F10) don't seem to work with 14th generation processors. Your results may vary. I've built dozens of systems over the years for personal use, business use (coding), friends, family and some small businesses. Never had this much trouble. Gigabyte tech support, once you finally get off hold, was excellent; the negative results were not their fault. ... show more

  • Nice mobo- good build quality, highly adjustable settings, a little RGB eye candy
Style: Z790 AORUS ELITE AX DDR4
I really like this mobo. Highly customizable settings, nice build quality, etc. My buddy just built an brand new Asus system- flashed the recently released Asus BIOS update and bricked it. Asus sent him a replacement- two of the four RAM slots did not work. Give this Gigabyte Z790 Aorus DDR4 Wifi a chance. I paired it with a new Intel i7-13700 CPU, a Thermalrite Assassin air cooler, a Samsung Gen 4 M.2 drive and 48 GB of Corsair RAM. It screams in gaming even with a legacy Nvidia 3060Ti GPU. Flashed the BIOS to version F6 (due to recent security revelations) - super easy to do right thru Windows 11. Went perfect. Super happy with this mobo so far ! This is my first new gen computer build in many years. Just BUY it ! ... show more
