We have bought these filter replacements several times now. Very happy with the performance and quality. They filter out most of the dust and pollen from the room without effecting the airflow through the unit. We change the complete set once a year although I'm sure that we could probably get away with changing the charcoal portion less frequently and just rinsing it off. But since they come in a set we just change the whole thing at once.

I have been using the 5500-2 for years now, and while these filter changes are expensive, you only need to buy it once for a year and you're set. It's easy to change out, and clean out each month or week to keep the filter lasting longer, and you also will notice the difference with the airflow that a new filter brings as well. It just works, and keeps the air fresh, so win win for me.

I tried to save money by buying a generic replacement filter, but it ended up being full of carbon pellets. I thought that would be a good thing at first but it actually seemed to restrict the airflow. My air cleaner wasn’t pulling in dust as well and it felt like the machine was having to work harder than it should. This genuine Winix filter is more expensive, but it fits right and lets the air purifier run the way it’s supposed to. The price is a little steep, but I’d rather pay more for the correct filter than risk straining or shortening the life of my air cleaner.

No issues with the filter or replacement. I have to say these things along with the machine are doing a good job with keeping the air clean. I do like to vacuum the prefilter about once a week or every other week minimum just to see how much dust it pulls. It's unbelievable. I have bad allergies and I think these are keeping them at bay. I have a few flare ups year round but nothing major like i used to have.
