  • Thoughts so far
Style: Base Model Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I purchased this camera to replace a gopro hero3+ black that died. I was pretty disappointed with the customer service, or lack of it that I received from gopro. I will admit that I have only had this camera a couple of days but I wanted to start posting a review for this camera since as of now there are only a handful of review. I will continue to update the review as I play with more features. ****This review is getting rather lengthy so I think I will put up a pros and cons for those that don't quite have the time to read the entire review**** Pros: GPS enabled tracking ANT+ Pairing Bluetooth compatibility Travel lapse mode Variety of video and photo modes, including night settings Auto orientation so you don't have to remember to flip your video Standardized mount that can work with gopro and 3rd party mounts g-metrix use with virb edit compatibility with other garmin devices Separate controls for photo/video very easy to use Voice control works very well Cons: Battery gets very hot and con produce fogging inside of the case if you don't use the desiccant. The first camera I received wouldn't pair with the fenix 2 watch Some settings such as continuous time lapse are only available in extended time lapse mode. As far as cons go that is really all I have right now. I have to say I love the g-metrix overlays they are awesome and make my cycling videos a lot more interesting for others to watch. So far when I have used the altimeter door my elevation and grade have been fairly accurate. The video and picture quality seem very good, and I am more than happy with these. I also like that the orientation can be set to manual so that I don't accidentally film an entire trip upside down. The touchscreen is nice and big, bright, and responsive on a camera this size. The menus take a bit to get used to coming from a gopro but nothing too terribly crazy. I do like that you can use the touchscreen even inside of the waterproof case, but sometimes I just get frustrated with having to do the same swipe several times to get a response so I start using the buttons which work great. The separate button/lever for photos and video respectively are great. I also like that you can just flip the lever forward and it will power up and begin taking video. It takes a couple of seconds for this to happen but it is great for when you are in a hurry and you can also turn the camera off as long as this is the way it was turned on. Travel lapse and time lapse have seemed to work great so far. I have only messed around with them in the car and a bit on my bike. The one thing that I am at least so far disappointed by is the virb edit software when editing travel and time lapse photos. I wanted to edit how long each picture stayed up but I couldn't figure out how to select all of them and change the time all at once, instead I had to change the time on each individual picture. At least so far I am not a fan of the edit features available for travel and time lapse. This is more an issue with the editing software than the camera so I'm not really taking points off for that. One thing to note with the travel and time lapse is that if you have the camera set to auto shut off it apparently will do this while travel lapse is going. I had to change that setting to get the travel lapse to record correctly. ****I wanted to clarify that this was using the time and travel lapse features in the photo mode. I have yet to play with them in video mode.**** The slomo feature is nice in that you don't even have to think about what setting to use, you can just select one of the presets. I set that and filmed using a circular saw and then slowed it to 12.5% in the software, which is the lowest you can go. The blade was still moving way to fast to make out individual teeth but the way the sawdust swirled around when it was that slowed down was pretty awesome to watch. One disappointing thing with the camera has been the night photo and night time lapse. Maybe I just need to get into the pro settings and adjust some of those settings but compared to when I was messing around with a gopro hero4 silver the night photos from the virb are nowhere near as good as those on the gopro. I may change this part of the review after messing with more of the pro features. I also wish the delay feature was available on all of the time lapse settings rather than just extended. It would be nice to be able to set up a night lapse photo shoot and then go to bed and let it start in the middle of the night. I have also messed around with the loop video just using the camera as a dash cam. This worked great and I think could come in very handy while cycling. I have had issues with a bunch of kids running me off the road that I would have like to have a license plate number. The only issue is that the camera gets really hot on the dash and inside of the waterproof case it really heats up. You also can't plug in the camera meaning it eats through the battery. I have orderd the cage and I think this should take care of a few of those issues. On a rather odd note my wife said the camera looks more masculine than the gopro so I guess since I'm a man that is a plus, who knows, just thought I would mention it since she said it. So at least to date my main issues are with the night photo/night time lapse modes and also with the virb edit software. As I mentioned both of these may be user error as opposed to issues with the camera or software. I plan to take the camera out into the high Uintas this weekend and see how it does on some hikes, drives, etc. Then down into the red rock area and see how things go down there, including some night time lapse to try to get some star photos. I will continue to update this review, I just wanted to make sure to get some more reviews up for the camera. 9/30/2106 I have been messing around with voice controls and overall they seem to work pretty well. The only issue is just getting used to using the proper phrasing. It took me a while to figure out why I couldn't get voice control to record a video. It is because I would say "OK Garmin, Start Video". The OK Garmin part activated voice control but start video isn't the proper phrasing. You have to say start recording or the video won't activate, you also have to say "OK Garmin, Stop Recording" to get it to stop. With taking a picture it is nice because you have 2 options, take a photo and take a picture both work. Once you remember that the voice controls work really well and from quite a distance even with the case on. That mic on the front works really well I have been impressed with how clearly sound is recorded through the case, much better than the gopro3+ or 4. I haven't tried the highlight feature with voice control or without so currently I can't comment on that. I will continue updating the review as I use more features. 10/2/16 New update. We went hiking in the Uintas and I took the Virb along. I used the altimeter door because I wanted to make sure that we had all the info for the hike since it was entirely above 10,000 ft. I also tracked the hike using a Fenix 2 hike mode with smart gps on. In hindsight I wish I would have changed this to record every second. I took photos and recorded video. The sound on the video was surprising good with the case on considering that at times it was fairly windy. We only took small sections of video which when editing together shows little dots and small sections of the overall trail. I have been trying to use the overlay metrix from the fenix so that I could get the entire trail to show up and then have a glowing dot show where on the trail that the clip was shot. So far I haven't figured out how to do this and it is pretty frustrating but again not an issue with the camera if anything it is not being familiar enough with the software or the software not having that functionality. I did use the auto make video feature where you select music, theme, clips, etc and the virb software just pumps out a video that matches the length of the music. This worked out surprisingly well and if you are feeling lazy is a great way to put together a little video of a trip. I again used the voice controls to take pictures of us together when we were in the Notch. It was pretty windy up there but I was still able to get the virb to take photos from a good 20 feet away. One option that I wish was available was the zoom and ultra-zoom in photo mode. All I have been able to find is changing from 12 mp to 8 mp. The pictures turned out really well and I liked being able to add some of the overlays so we could have the elevation. On the way back down it started raining and hailing pretty good. I was a bit worried about having the altimeter door and started noticing a fogging on the lcd screen. Garmin does provide a desiccant pack I just neglected to put it in the case. I can't comment yet on how effective this is or if I would have had the fogging issue if I had used the waterproof door. On the trip out I turned the auto off feature back on and set up travel lapse in video mode. I wanted to see if the camera shut itself down like it did in travel lapse in photo mode. The travel lapse in video mode stayed on and took great pictures every 1 mile. I also messed around with the live streaming to youtube. This isn't really a feature I see myself using a lot but it did work fairly well. I was using my home wifi network for my phone and camera and had a bunch of other things on the network so there was a pretty good lag. I decided not to try it using my data on the phone because it seems to use a pretty big amount of data. Features that I still need to play with are trying to control the camera from my watch as well as pairing some of the ant+ devices to the camera. So far I have been really happy with the camera and people that have asked me about it have seemed very intrigued by all of the options and possibilities. 10/4/16 I tried to pair the camera with my fenix 2 watch using the virb remote instructions in the manual. For some reason the watch just continually says no Virb found. I have tried to use the New Virb selection but it still is unable to pair with the camera. This is a frustrating discovery because this is one of the features that I was really looking forward to trying in the hopes that I could use my watch without having to buy the remote or always use my phone. If I am able to remedy the issue or I discover why the pairing isn't working I will update this section of the post. If anyone reading this has any suggestions on what I might try please let me know. The firmware on the watch and the camera are both up to date as of 10/4/16 when I tried to pair. Oh and I also tried with the Edge 510 even though it isn't listed as a compatible device. Since it had the virb section under sensors and I couldn't get the fenix to work I figured I would give it a shot. No luck with that either. I have been able to detect ant+ heart rate monitors so I know something with ant+ is getting through, just no luck with the remote features. If I can't get this figured out I may have to adjust my rating down. One of the big selling points was the ability to work with some of my other garmin devices and let me control the camera with them. I knew the edge 510 was possibly not going to work but the fenix 2 is listed as compatible. 10/9/16 *****After many days of communication with garmin customer support it has been determined that the camera is most likely defective since I have been unable to pair it with the fenix 2 after many attempts at troubleshooting with customer support. I should receive a replacement shortly and I will give this one a thorough run through. I am still pretty happy with the camera and if I can just get this pairing thing taken care of I am still comfortable with my 4 start rating. Garmin customer support has been extremely helpful. I will update the review to reflect any issues or lack of issues with the replacement camera***** 10/13/16 I received the replacement camera and have been playing around with it. It quickly paired up with my fenix 2 watch so that is working. I will run it through all of the other features but so far everything seems to be okay. I went for a bike ride and used the electronic image stabilization. This worked really well on the road ride, although one section of road that is really rough had pretty choppy video. I went for a short ride so the battery wasn't an issue. I do worry that it will be difficult to record longer rides because of the battery life. 11/28/16 Camera number 2 is going back as well. Unfortunately I am a bit outside of being able to return it to Amazon. This camera is having issues with the video record switch now powering up the camera and starting video. If the camera is powered on the record switch works fine. I thought I had tried out this feature when I received it but either I didn't or something else is going on. Garmin has authorized return but it looks like I may have to pay for shipping which is a bit frustrating for a camera that is less than 60 days old. I am still a fan of the camera and Garmin's customer support but it is frustrating to be going on my 3rd camera in less than 90 days. ... show more

  • Action camera with metric data built in
Style: Base Model Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
The media could not be loaded. I am a actual person who purchased the product. I know it is a surprise among the sea of thinly veiled reviewers that have to have the disclaimer: "I received the product for a fair and quality review...meaning it is bribed review." Sigh...I hate those I actually bought the Virb ultra with my hard earned cash working. I am taking flying lessons. I purchased it so I could record my lessons and thought about getting dual use as a light camera and go any where action camera for fun. I am not extreme so have not tested this while jumping off a mountain into snow or swimming with sharks. I am a garmin fan but their products tend be released at almost beta stage software then mature into a excellent product. Which is not so here. I think they are quickly updating and fixing any issues (I had no issues myself). The metric data aspect really attracted me. Good: The metrics match pretty well. Although the altitude does not match the planes altitude after taking off and flying for a bit but it is close at times (off by 100 - 300 feet at times). *Update: Contacted garmin support. The elevation variation is actually within tolerance. According to Garmin support the elevation variation is plus + or - 400 feet. SO now that I know that the virb ultra 30 i actually a lot closer to the right altitude. Just a small thing to keep mind but its actually a very minor issues as the accuracy in my experience has been between 40-300 ft. So all in all its pretty close. The speed matches well and the tracking function is really helpful. I will try to dig into why the altitude doesn't match closer after take off (maybe the refresh rate on the altimeter? it is hilly area also) The image quality turned out really well. I don't know how the new gopro could markedly beat it. Metrics on board is nice and the Garmin edit software is great and easy to use. Camera controls are easy, well thought out and simple. Blinking lights on camera make it easy to tell if it is recording or on standby. Quick software updates Sound quality...excellent. Size is small and button layout is very straight forward is easy. Touch screen is great! No weird funky missed touches and is responsive, simple and layout well. (good job garmin!) Bad: Not many accessories yet...I am sure they are coming and they are responsive to suggestions so it is shaping up to be a good product all around. It is pricey though, especially compared to my Yi 4K I had but you are getting a ton of capabilities that no other camera on the market can provide. Going to need extra batteries or way to connect to battery pack for long recording or especially 4k. I was able to get about 1 hour 20 minutes on a full battery at 1080p 30 fps ( maybe if I turned off wifi and few others I can increase that). overall good considering all this little thing is doing. Final thoughts: Even with the gopro new release coming up I am happy with the Ultra 30 and will be keeping it because the metric data capabilities are amazing. I hope Garmin continues to invest in the Ultra 30 software development and accessories. I think they have a real winner here. In the photo you can see I have the Garmin cage with protective lens (only available through Garmin as of this moment). It is a great accessory if you do not need the hard plastic protective casing during filming. It is easy to get the camera in and out and quickly mounted. I also have the virb remote which is easy to use and simple. I highly recommend it if you would like a hands free operation without using voice commands (which work really well) Disclaimer: I bought the product and liked it. Garmin didn't give me anything! I will try to update the review as I continue to use it and learn.I wish there was battery pack I could plug into it to keep it running longer. maybe one that would allow me to use inline audio recording from the headsets at same time. Update: I attached 3 photos I took to show the basic picture quality. Price just dropped to match the GoPro 399 price I presume. Shame I purchased it few days too soon at 499. It is a great price at 399. Still having issues with altimeter though. FYI Amazon doesn't protect against price drops. So I lost 100 bucks. Boo Amazon your customer service used to be good. Action camera 5 stars Amazon 2.5 stars (customer service isn't what it used to be at amazon) Good competitive move Garmin to match GoPro price. Update 11-4-16: I am still using the virb ultra 30 weekly. I really have grown to love this thing. It easy to use. I have no run into any overheating issues or write errors. It performs every time. I hope Garmin continue to develop and improve the android app as well as desktop software editing software. I would purchase again. Update 12-1-16 (elevation issue resolved, you can enter a reference elevation in virb editing software): It is still performing great. I am not sure if garmin updated the virb edit software or I was not aware before but you now can enter post recording reference elevation. So if you reference elevation while on the ground at 0 or so the elevation in the video will be correct in relation to the set point. Still recommend. I do wish garmin had put USB C connection on the virb ultra 30 but it still love my virb ultra 30. ... show more
