This GPS Map66rs replaced an old GPS Map60CSx that has put up with ten years of constant wear and tear and is still going strong even though all the labels on the buttons wore off years ago and it carries its share of dents, scratches, and scuffs. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. As much as I love my 60CSx it is just time, so the 66rs has a tough act to follow. The basic core of the 66rs seems as robust and dependable as the 60; satellite lock is fast and reliable, position accuracy excellent for this type of device, widely customizable. The menu structure is very similar to the old 60, so the learning curve when changing from an older version is quite low and familiar. I chose the 66rs specifically for the rechargeable batteries. I understand the downside is "what do you do if the batteries run out when you are off-grid?" This is where the combo pack with the power bank is a good deal. The power bank weighs about the same as a spare set of batteries, easily stashes in the pack and will provide one full recharge. The downside of the 66rs for me is transferring tracks and waypoints to it to use in the field. It was straightforward to download waypoints and tracks to the 60CSx, just connect to Basecamp, or other 3rd party mapping programs, and transfer the files to the memory card. Tracks and waypoints automatically display on the 60's screen. Not so with the 66rs. To see prerecorded tracks on the 66rs they need to be included in an Activity. To get an activity on the 66rs, first I needed to install Garmin Explore on my phone. Then I copy the gpx file to Dropbox or something similar that I can access from my phone, and then import the file into Explore on my phone. Then I have to synch the Activity with the GPS ... It all works, but wow, not particularly intuitive nor nearly as simple as drag and drop. If you copy a track to the GPS that is not part of an activity it doesn't automatically display on the device. In my view, this is the big downside of the Garmin universe ... basecamp, explore, connect, express ... I just want to be outside, I don't want to be a helpdesk software expert. Battery life on the 66sr is respectable, good for two solid days of use. The power bank adds two more days. For longer expeditions, I can change the recording frequency to basically double that. For my use that is plenty and I like the convenience of the rechargeable batteries. Overall the GPM Map series of devices are still dependably rugged and excellent GPS receivers, its just too bad you have to use crappy Garmin software to interface with them. ... show more

Great piece of technology. I use it pretty consistently with my job when I am walking trails or boundary lines and it is accurate. The battery life isnt bad but I do reccomend bringing an extra power bank for trips longer than a day.

  • Disappointed

I had to return this device because it was not working as advertised. The device would not connect to my iPhone via Bluetooth so it could sync. I had used Garmin Explorer to create waypoints for a hiking trail, but it could not sync to the device. What's worse is the really outdated user interface, which is something like I had on my eTrex 20 years ago. The screen is small and has a very low resolution. Both All Trails and Gaia GPS on my iPhone run circles around Garmin for mapping and GPS guidance. The only advantage the Garmin has is InReach, which I never got a chance to use. ... show more
