  • The camera can be stolen from your car in 2 seconds and without using any tools!
Style: Backup Camera
The engineers on this project are not too bright. This camera can be removed from your car or truck by anybody who has two hands in less than two or three seconds and they do not need any tools to do it. I had to butcher the $35 mounting bracket so that I could mount the camera inside the back window of my van. So far the camera seems to work just fine. You will have break into my van to steal the camera now. ... show more

  • Garmin needs to fix theft issue
Style: Backup Camera
I have zero issues with the camera itself. It works great and was easy to set up. What I do have problems with is how easy it would be to steal it. It literally can be popped out of it's side clips with minimum effort. It even fell off once when I accidentally slammed the door it was attached to. I'm fed up with sticking it in the glove box when I publicly park then forgetting to put it back on when I return. Garmin seriously has to fix this and make it more robust. ... show more

  • Using as a front bumper parking camera
Style: Backup Camera
I purchaced this BC40 for the easy installation and my expected limited use as a front bumper parking camera. I prefer to hardwire everything, but gave in to the ease of installation and configuration of this unit. The start was a little shakey. It recongnized the camera, but then could not connect to the camera on second startup. After the Garmin did two restarts, things seem to have settled down and everything is function as designed. LIKES: You can flip the video and delete the guidance lines (for forward facing cameras). Perfect for my application as a front bumper camera (you cannot do this with the BC 30 hard wire camera). Voice command takes only a couple of seconds to execute which is acceptable. I park two vehicles inside in a garage with only 12" of clearance. The camera make this easy. You can use the "SHOW VIDEO" and "HIDE VIDEO" commands without the "HEY GARMIN", Great. DISLIKES: I hate the idea of changing batteries every few months. I will see how this works with my limited need to activate. I would have prefered the BC30 wired solution, have the limitations noted above for front use. ... show more

  • Garbage - Waste of time and money
Style: Backup Camera
First off I purchased a RV Garmin. Combo with a back up camera BC30. Which gets wired in. I get them together in a package. Install the back up camera, then load up the GPS which took over 5 hours to update. Come to find out the unit does not work with any other camera than the BC40, So I buy that.. Install it, Come to find out it can only be installed with the licence plate bracket and it does not reach the "wireless"limit. Its an RV for crying out loud.. Its big! Who ever designed this garbage should be fired. I feel like I wasted my time and money buying Garmin products and will never do it again! Highly disappointed.... Expensive Chinese Garbage!!! ... show more

  • Some hidden facts about this unit, learn about its shortcomings before you buy.
Style: Backup Camera
Got the camera up and running for a couple days, here is my initial review: Pro: * Installation is easy, no wiring required * Pairing with supported GPS is very easy Con: * It is not clearly listed in the literature, but to get high resolution pictures (1280 x 720), you are required to have DriveSmart 55 or 65. On my DriveSmart 61, although there is a firmware upgrade to support the camera. It only provides low resolution pictures (I believe it is 640x480), it is poor on a 7" display, you see all the jagged edges, much like the picture on an old children toy. I would rate the picture quality as adequate at best, but it really belongs to the poor category. * If you are in an area with possibility of theft, and if they know what the BC40 is, it takes them 2 seconds to remove it from your car. Just press the clip and it comes right off! There is no way to secure it, it pops right out. You will have to take it out every time you park and click it back on when you get in the car, despite the hassle of wiring, you are much better off with a wired unit, as this gets old really fast. The complete lack of security is perhaps the worst design of this camera. * It does not activate when you put the car in reverse, you have to push an icon on the GPS to activate it. An alternative is to configure your GPS to view the camera every time you turn it on, it will turn off when you start moving. This setting would only work if you have a switched 12V outlet. * Every time you activate the camera, it take a few seconds for it to turn on and show the picture, so be patient. * Its picture is a fisheye view, if you are not used to this type of distorted picture, you probably won't like it. Now, back to some common questions I found around the web but rarely answered. * I have it installed in a sedan, there is no disconnect issue. Despite the unit say it will connect via WiFi with a WiFi enabled GPS (2.4GHz band), it only connects via Bluetooth on the DS 61. There is no option to choose the connectivity method. * Perhaps it only uses WiFi for the DS 55 and 65 for high res pictures (I don't have a way to verify it), in WiFi mode, it communicates in 2.4GHz band, channel 11. Nearby WiFi at that channel (one of two most common channels) can cause a lost of picture if that signal is strong. I suspect some people have connectivity issue because their cars has a WiFi hotspot build-in, and could be using the same channel. And if you pull up next to another car with WiFi, their WiFi can potentially knock out your picture as well. * Battery type: The manual dictate the use of Lithium batteries because of its cold weather stability. It is relatively warm now, so I am using a pair of NiMH rechargeable with it. I will update on battery life later when it dies. So overall, I am somewhat disappointed. My biggest disappointment (in order) are: * With a large 7" screen, the HD mode should be made available on the DS 61 via a firmware update. * There should be an option to connect via WiFi or Bluetooth if both the GPS and BC 40 support it. * They really need a way to secure the unit, zero security is not an option for any exterior automotive electronics. If they can update the firmware to provide the same features to all supported devices (rather than limiting some function only to the DS 55/65), it would be an OK buy. In its current form, I would suggest wait around for a better option, or go with a wired route. It just came out, I hope Garmin will do the necessary updates in the near future to improve the functionality of the product. Update: The latest firmware 6.1 brings no change to operation or resolution. I also added a couple pictures so you can see what it looks like compare to an in-car unit. On top it is the BC40 with the DS61, the bottom is the factory unit from my car (2019 BMW 640xiGT). The resolution difference is striking, and the picture is also somewhat washed out. Unfortunately, you cannot control the contrast and color saturation of the picture like in an in-car unit. Although some people think the 7 inch Garmin as too big, it is actually quite small compared to those in the modern car. Update 2: The BC 40 goes into a low power Bluetooth mode when the GPS is not requesting a picture to conserve battery power. When one pushes the camera button, the GPS sends a Bluetooth signal to wake up the BC 40. The BC 40 takes a while to wake up (hence the picture delay), once awake, it transmits both through Bluetooth and WiFi, as you can find it with a WiFi Analyzer. In the case of the non DS 65/55 units, even if it is WiFi enabled, it is crippled to only receive the image through the low-res Bluetooth band. With this in mind, the battery life will vary by usage. ... show more

  • This Backup Camera is the solution!
Style: Backup Camera
I have an Alfa Romeo 4C sports car, which is wonderful to drive but a nightmare to get into a parallel parking slot because of no immediate backwards visibility. This camera is easy to install, provides clear video of whats behind me, and makes all backing up much safer. The camera has an ultrawide lens. The plus is that not only can I see back, but I can see what's coming from the rear sides and safely pull out of a parking spot. The negative is that everything looks farther away than it actually is and I needed to learn that by backing up to objects very slowly until I learned how to interpret the distances the display provides. Battery life for me, using lithiums, is fine. Easy to pair with the SmartDrive 65. ... show more
