If you are anything like me and have more PCs than you do monitors or in our case you frequently work on other people's computers in your spare time, you've likely come to appreciate the ease of using a KVM switch. The biggest problem with them is that it sometimes causes Windows to go wonky where it resizes all of your screens assuming you'd want that. Or if you have a laptop connected, it moves all the windows to the laptop screen and you have to manually move them back. This device solves that. The only issues we had with it is that it feels very cheaply made. Almost as if you twisted it the tiniest bit it would fall apart and the resolution doesn't go nearly as high as the listing said. Overall we were happy with it as it meets all of our needs but we are giving it a 4-star review because of the build quality and the resolutions not going as high as the manufacturer states. ... show more

I used this to setup a VM using a 4K monitor with passthrough and then removed the monitor from this device and it allowed the VM to continue to think that the same 4K monitor was still attached and allowed for better use of the VM remotely.

This has made a crappy monitor great, let me explain. I thought buying an Asus monitor was a good idea. I know, yeah, I was young and naive. I've been suffering this monitor for years. It disconnects on power-on. That is to say, if the screen is off for any reason it will send a disconnect and reconnect signal while powering on. This causes any device to completely reset and forget what display settings you've configured. Because of this, I will never buy another Asus monitor, maybe any Asus product. Then along came this little device. It neatly and transparently tells my computer what it is and then let's my garbage monitor do whatever it wants. Now I don't have to spend five minutes moving all my windows back around every time I come home or wake up or use the KVM to switch to a computer on which I'm performing some kind of maintenance. This is one of those devices that you might not know that it even exists, and it fixes a problem you didn't know that you had any options for, let alone a simple solution. For certain combinations of video hardware and displays, you can wind up with issues that range from minor annoyance to major frustration. And this little device fixes them all. In this case I have a very nice monitor that it's one big drawback is that it can take an oddly long time to switch from one video source to another. Using these on each input of the HDMI switch I use has eliminated that from happening. This was a minor annoyance, but using these on the inputs has eliminated it completely. Then for the major frustrations it can solve, I was experiencing two specific problems. The first problem was that I have a machine with a large 4K monitor on it. But I have configured Windows to be in 100% scaling instead of the default, in order to have the maximum amount of desktop space - the equivalent of a 4 monitor (2x2) configuration. When the monitor would get turned off (this machine is on all the time), Windows would reorganize my desktop. The effect was the same as if you unplugged the 4K monitor and plugged in a typical HD 1080 monitor where Windows would resize and move all the open application windows to the top left of the desktop. Using the 4K version of this same device completely eliminated this issue. Now I don't have to reset my desktop every time I sit down at this machine. The other problem that these have fixed for me was that I use video capture cards on various machines and will use the built in Windows Camera application to easily capture video with them. The problem is that Windows Camera has a quirk that it will stop recording when the monitor is turned off. Now that problem is eliminated also now that this virtual display emulator installed. The device comes in minimalist packaging which in this case also means it does not include any instructions. While I see others have left comments about this being a negative for them, I don't quite see it that way. I see it as a testimonial to how simple and easy this device is to use. And I also appreciate it for the fact that it minimizes waste materials. Thus overall, this is an excellent product in that it looks and works exactly as shown and described in the product information. It solves several unique problems with HDMI displays for certain use cases. The only drawback of this device is there are likely to be many people out that that don't realize there is a device like this and what it is doing to solve the problem that they are experiencing. I use a 3440x1440 monitor hooked up to 4 computers through a KVM and switch and like to have the ability to VNC in from my laptop from time to time. One of these computers only has a single HDMI output available, and when the KVM is not switched to that computer, VNC does not work. This device allows me to VNC in this case as it provides a virtual monitor for the software to use, and also allows me use the connected monitor when at the desk. The one downside to this particular device is that not only is the virtual monitor limited to 1920x1080, so is the actually monitor while connected through this device. ... show more

Unfortunately it's not the perfect buy. It's cheap. Feels that way a little. It's just that it doesn't work with higher than 60hz and is only rated for HD, not 4K. Most of the time I need 4K, but this will work for the random HDMI in HD that I'll need. Regardless, glad I got it!

This adapter does it's job of tricking your computer into thinking a display is plugged in. This is useful for remote access uses or solving quirks with display power offs or other adapters. The pass-through function is nice when you want to use the port at the same time. If you don't need the pass-through you can find less expensive adapters. Just be sure to buy the one that works at the resolution and refresh rate you need for your use case. A nice bit a tech to add to your toolkit if you mess around with computers a lot. ... show more

This dummy monitor works fine. I have to constantly switch between multiple laptops and the window resizing every time really annoys me a lot. With this dummy monitor, the window resizing has stopped. One thing to note is that this is only 1080p, if you have a 1440p or 4k monitor, it won't work.
