  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Viable alternative to Kodak. I miss Fujifilm
I’ll be honest, I bought this more because it was the cheapest I’ve seen any color film in a long time. With Kodak’s ridiculous monopoly on the color negative film market, finding professional grade film for under $10/roll is like finding a unicorn. For my example images, I scan with a medium format camera and convert the scans in Lightroom using Negative Lab Pro. COLOR/CONTRAST/SATURATION: Right out of the gate this film has that classic cool Fujifilm color cast to it. If that’s the look you’re going for, great. But if you want that warm, more natural looking Kodak glow, it warms up just fine in post. I included an unedited scan of my dog next to an edited one where I warmed it up a bit just to show you the Fuji color cast I'm talking about. Once I warmed the photos up, the greens popped and everything looked more natural. Keep in mind you shouldn't put too much stock into color cast. With modern software and technology, color correcting in that regard is easy and painless. It was more of an issue a long time ago when technology was somewhat limited but that's not the case today. It's literally a small adjustment of the temperature and tint sliders to achieve the look you're after. A film's look nowadays is more about saturation and contrast being baked into it, which is more difficult to manipulate. SCANNING: The negatives dried nice and flat, which made it easy to scan. No complaints there. GRAIN: The grain in this film could be viewed as a bad thing if you’re used to shooting Kodak Portra 400 or T-Max 400, which has exceptionally fine grain. But I would say the grain is about on par with other professional grade 400 speed films. Yes, the grain is there but for many people, grain is the reason they're shooting film anyway. I find the grain to be pleasing but it's not the reason I shoot film. It's not messy like cheap grocery store film. If grain bothers you, I will share with you something a photographer friend of mine told me, which totally changed the way I look at photography. He said "I believe that anyone who insists on studying the grain of an image instead of appreciating its content is missing the point of a photograph" In other words, the grain's not what matters. Is your photo good? If it is, it doesn't matter how much grain is present. Viewers will appreciate the photo, not the grain. Overall I like this film mostly because it's a viable alternative to Kodak film right now. You honestly can't beat the price, which is unfortunate in it of itself because $50 is the upper limit of what I'm willing to spend on film. Not long ago, $50 5-packs was considered very expensive but thanks to Kodak's vice grip on the film market, this is now a bargain, sadly. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Professional Film Stock
This is a solid medium format film stock, fast enough to shoot in shady conditions. And with the current surge in film princes, it's hard to believe that this is less than $10/roll!

Honestly? As a film it's just OKish; I much prefer Portra or Ektar for less grain and more realistic colors. My shooting is 90% at night, which also skews the results. If rated soley as a film, 3 stars and that's being generous. BUT - it's the only 120 film you can get same day Amazon delivery on, and sometimes that makes all the difference, so Five Stars it is. ... show more
