  • Not exactly complete/universal...
Style: Repair Kit
The media could not be loaded. I had an old toilet that still had an ancient floating ball type; well, my toilet was constantly running/leaking into the bowl. To be honest, prior to installing this, I never even knew how exactly a toilet even worked or its components (fill valve/overflow valve/flapper/etc). I decided to give this "All-in-One" kit a try because it seemed to be the most popular. This one with the blue fill valve, Fluidmaster 400ARHRKP10 model, is a newer model that's supposed to fill faster/quieter and has an adjustable roller clamp to control the fill level in the toilet bowl itself. The other Fluidmaster 400AKRP10 (plain black fill valve top), which was a few dollars cheaper is an older model. The kit includes: 2 brass bolts 5/16" x 3" 4 stainless steel washers 6 rubber washers 4 hex nuts (Careful! They're actually not the same size... there is one thin and one thicker one!) 1 tank-to-bowl gasket (If you have a Gerber/Kohler toilet, it won't work) 1 tank lever 1 fill valve (adjusts to 10"-15") 1 flush valve (2") with flapper Now it's not exactly "complete" because my toilet requires 3 bolts instead of two. Why they couldn't just include an extra spare bolt? Oddly, they include extra rubber washers if you do require a third bolt (the manual just says to reuse your old bolt if you require a third one, but if it's rusted, you need a new bolt) I ended up ordering additional bolt/washers "Kissler & Company Inc. 68-7321 Tank to Bowl Bolt Set Heavy Duty, Solid Brass" Who wants to reuse one old bolts/washers if you're replacing everything new? Make sure you use the rubber washers on the bottom of the bolts too - and not just for the top portion of the bolts submerged in the tank water (or else it will leak; I initially had this problem for not putting them on) The hardest part was taking the old parts off, especially since mine was all severely rusted. The manual is actually pretty overwhelming, especially since step two suddenly shows a diagram with all the parts already attached and asking you to saw off the overflow pipe. It would be nice if the overflow pipe was simply adjustable, but you need to saw it off to fit your tank. MAKE SURE you add the rubber washer not just on the inside of the toilet tank, but on the outer bottom side as well. And pay close attention to the "correct order of hardware parts" diagram, where metal hex nut that goes at the very bottom is thicker than the hex nut that goes above it. (if you're in a hurry, you'll think they're the same sizes) The orange gasket was much thicker than my old one that I was afraid it didn't fit my toilet perfectly, but it seems it's okay for it to initially protrude; once you screw down all those bolts, it will squeeze. I had zero knowledge of toilets prior and I don't consider myself that handy, so I'm pretty proud I was able to fix the toilet myself. YouTube is also your best friend. I will update my review if I have any problems. Pros: - Affordable/get most what you need to replace a toilet - Much nicer/cleaner/compact than the old floating ball mechanism - Be able to adjust the amount of water in the toilet bowl itself (with the blue roller clamp attached to the fill valve) - Easy to adjust the tank water level/strength of flush Cons: - Not exactly "complete" all "universal"; especially if your toilet requires 3 bolts; gasket might not fit - You have to saw off the overflow pipe yourself ... show more

  • :-( Neither universal nor easy
Style: Repair Kit
The ad says says "Universal ... All-in-One" Well, no. The frustration started when I found two, different instruction manuals in the package. Eventually I found the small number that identified the correct booklet. Then, I'm working along and got to the instruction, "Remove gasket" and a picture of someone using two fingers to remove the gasket on the flush valve. Only, my gasket didn't look the same, and was very difficult to remove. But, OK, I did it. Farther along (page 7) it says "Apply tank-to-bowl gasket to bottom of flush value ...." Yes, it sure looks easy. Then it says: "NOTE: If you have a Gerber or Kohler two piece toilet, it is recommended you use a different tank to bowl gasket. ... Kohler: Use a triangular Kohler gasket ... not included. ... NOTE: if gaskets are in good condition it is safe to reuse." I don't know how to judge whether the gasket is in good enough condition to reuse. It is in worse condition because of the fight I had to remove it which, if I were going to re-use it, apparently was unnecessary. But, since it is clearly somewhat deteriorated (based on the black smudging on whatever touched the gasket), and since I'm re-doing all the fittings in the toilet bowl because it constantly has a slow leak that wasn't fixed by replacing the flapper valve (and I couldn't figure out what, exactly, was causing the leaking), it would make no sense to continue using the old gasket. So, I just ordered a Kohler triangular gasket for $12.45 so I can finish this project with the Fluidmaster "Universal" set that cost me $19.98. If Fluidmaster had just been honest in their ad, I would have been much happier. -------------------------------- Dropping my review down one more star (to, now, one-star). My toilet has the handle on the side. The flushing rod that the flapper chain attaches to is plastic. Their instructions say to bend it 90 degrees, carefully, within a certain segment of the rod. I tried to carefully follow their instructions, and failed. The rod snapped. I'm sure I could eventually learn how to bend the plastic rod so it doesn't break, but I only got that one chance. My advice -- just don't get this kit if the handle of the toilet is on the side. ... show more

  • Solution to Leaking "Tank to Bowl Gasket" in my 20-year old American Standard toilet (Make Sure you Have the Right Tools!)
Style: Repair Kit
I've been dealing with a running toilet for a couple months now. At first, I thought it was the flapper, because I could see water slowly running into the bowl, but after trying two different flappers, I realized it was actually the large rubber gasket that seals the tank to the top of the bowl. This is NOT a difficult job, however, it is VERY IMPORTANT to have the correct tools. For my job, I needed to use extra large "channel lock" pliers (which I didn't own) and a hacksaw (which I own). The channel locks are required to remove the extra large plastic locknut that attaches the flush valve to the underside of the tank. The hacksaw was needed to trim about 1 1/2 inches from the top of the new overflow pipe to fit my toilet. I found the included instructions to be very thorough, and the kit included ALL the parts I needed to do a complete retrofit of the toilet tank. Fluidmaster provides a 7-YEAR Warranty on the kit, so we'll have to wait and see how long the kit lasts; hopefully another 20 years. ... show more

  • CHICOM strikes again!
Style: Repair Kit
Sames model and manufacturer as the original. The original lasted over 15 years but I will be surprised if this lasts half as long. I didn't think it was possible to make this any cheaper than the previous but they managed to do it. Do not be too quick to toss out the original hardware. They repaced the brass with low grade stainless steel. The heavy duty neoprene washer with a thin plastic one. The flapper is thinner and lighter than the original. The metal slide has been replaced with a clunky plastic worm screw. Even the chain is something you might get out of a bubble gum machine. Ya, all the parts fit and it works.Thats all I can say about it. "American Standard" LMFAO! ... show more
