Top Amazon Reviews

  • Great product once you get it installed properly
Configuration: Fire TV Blaster
So I read reviews on this and was worried about connectivity problems. I bought it any way. I went thru the setup and it kept saying that the Fire Blaster was not able to complete the task (or something to that effect) So I looked online and figured out what the problem was. My wife and I have Amazon accounts and I did the setup on my account. Well the firestick on our TV is under my wife's name. So I asked Alexa on my echo dot to "switch accounts" to make sure Alexa was on my wife's account and BAM, it worked. During install, I did encounter another problem where my Smart TV and Receiver were OFFLINE in my Alexa app. I removed them both, went into my firestick/settings/Equipment Control/Manage Equipment went to TV and did a search, found it, same thing for the receiver, found it, and then both TV and RECEIVER were online. Of course they all (TV and FIRESTICK) should be on the same network. I have my blaster across the living room TV (still line of sight) about 15ft away (by the lamp in the pic) and it works great. Hope this helps. ... show more

  • Blaster is a versatile tool and seems to work well
Configuration: Fire TV Blaster
Blaster is easy to connect to TV (mine is not the newest model), and integrate with Alexa. To set up the TV, took a bit of fiddling and trial & error. But not too bad. It might be frustrating for some that don't have experience or patience to tweak settings such as these. The settings are somewhat intuitive if you have some understanding of the items you are adjusting. For example, it is very easy to set up the TV so that volume and on/off are controlled with voice with Alexa, but to set up voice commands to switch TV inputs between FireTV, Cable, or other electronics such as DVD, computer, etc, takes time to figure out how to tweak the settings. I assume there are many similarities in the IR remote control technology that allow aspects of the Blaster to work with minimal effort, but the differences in manufacturers of TVs make it necessary for you to adjust a number of settings to your own situation. Help in set up is minimal. You get some feedback, but you might need to contact Amazon for further assistance. I recommend you play with the settings and familiarize yourself with the functions. You can always reset the device and start over. My TV set up easy and I am able to use Alexa to turn it on and off, and to voice control my TV and FireTV 4K Stick with Alexa. But when it comes to switching the TV input back to cable from FireTV, other settings need to be adjusted. Imagine trying to build a device compatible with the great number of TV manufacturers and models available. Alexa did a good job incorporating what they could at set up, and then providing the settings adjustment tools in a simplified manner that will allow you to have more voice control of your TV functions. It takes some tweaking to get this feature working. TV menus switch differently, so you need to know how your TV menu responds to commands. For example, I wanted to simply switch between cable and FireTV. Even though I have other components connected to my TV, I wanted Alexa to only switch between Cable and FireTV. Settings allow you to specify a number of steps below and above the menu items to skip. Thus, I can ask Alexa to simply “switch input” to change back to tv. It will take trial and error. My purpose required simplification. My mother is 93 and has advanced macular degeneration. She can’t see to operate remotes and channels. She needs to use her voice, and that needs to be simple. With my TV, I can change input labels to some degree, but not enough. So, my command is “switch input”, for the TV to change between cable and FireTV. I can specify that the HDMI label is for cable, but Alexa doesn’t recognize this sub label, “Cable TV”, instead, it recognizes the main label, “HDMI1”. This is a little too confusing for a 93 year old to remember. If I program the Blaster to skip all inputs but the cable tv and FireTV, I can simply say “change input”, a much simpler, but not completely optimal solution for a blind, 93 year old, who has difficulty remembering new things such as this. She can use voice to ask for programs available through FireTV and Prime, and hopefully switch back to cable when she wants. For me, I can switch by voice to whichever input I want by name, such as "DVD", etc. Bottom line, this little Blaster device seems worth the $20 cost when it first came out. I plan to try it on another TV that is in the 15-20 year old range to see if it is compatible. If so, I’ll buy another Blaster. Simple. Effective. Inexpensive. I recommend the Blaster. ... show more

  • Most frustrating purchase ever in Amazon!!
Configuration: Fire TV Blaster
First of all, I never write negative reviews but find it totally necessary to express my frustration with this purchase. The theory behind this little gizmo is it controls your tv thru the Alexa interface. Changing channels, turning up volume, even operating your cable box. The reality is, it did all these things either poorly or not in coordination with the other skills listed. Problems were as follows 1. You need a separate app for the thing to work using 2 Apps and the fire tv and your television remote to set things up. 2. Instructions are arguably the absolute worst and most useless things I have ever used. No one could get this working by using the included instructions!! 3. Instructions are so bad that in other peoples comments, they try to explain the real way to set this up. What a pity that Amazon could not have simplified the entire process and used one app and not 2 and had someone write step by step, easy to read instructions on how to set this up. I spent 5 hours one night going thru various peoples explanations of how to get this set up. There is an entire thread on the forums pages, 9 pages to be exact on the confusion of this device. I put it away after 5 hours and went to bed. I woke up refreshed and tried to get it hooked up again to no avail after 5 1/2 more hours! The volume controls sometimes worked, then the cable tv controls sometimes worked, then the power on/off controls worked but the channels didn’t change. Then the channels changed and the volume didn’t work. Each time the Alexa voice from my echo yapped on with nonsense excuses saying “this tv is not programmed to do that” and “I’m not able to do that on this device”. All the time when the skill was just working 5 minutes before!! I finally returned the device for a refund. Best Buy has them on clearance for less than Amazon, apparently for these exact reasons! I am very tech savvy and do all of my own computer, network, smart home and tech stuff myself. This is just a losing cause with no road to easy installation. It is a shame because the idea is good and I was very excited for this gadget to work, calling out for the tv to turn on, adjust the volume and turn on the correct station while I made my morning coffee was intriguing to me. Unfortunately, no one was able to walk me thru the steps necessary to make this work, although many are having the same problem and trying to help others. If you are looking for a gadget that only turns on and off your tv, this will work but beyond that, if you can figure it out you are a better person than me. What a shame! ... show more
