  • Great value for the device and 1 year of the kids service
Digital Storage Capacity: 16 GB Color: Purple Offer Type: Fire 7 Kids
My kids have had IPads, and they are great devices, but theirs are extremely old and many of the apps were starting to not be supported. So it was time for an upgrade. I decided on buying the Kids edition of the kindle and my two girls have been extremely happy with them. I’ve also been impressed. Here’s what I liked and didn’t as compared to using an iPad for my kids: Good: The price of the device is a great value. Games on the display are colorful and bright, and both my girls can play for hours on one charge. The devices are easy to increase storage on. Unlike an iPad that is stuck at the storage you purchase it with, I bought the 16gb model and installed an inexpensive 128 gb sd card in them. The equivalent iPad would have been several hundred dollars more. I find the Kids plus software far mor intuitive for parents than how screen time on iPad works. It’s easy to set an appropriate age range on the kindle device and make sure my girls aren’t downloading anything that’s too mature, or too immature for their ages. Apple allows you to set limits on time, general maturity of content, and also block certain websites or apps (as does kindle) but the way that the Kids plus software works, it’s far easier to use in my opinion. The build quality, the protective case they come with, and the 2 year no worry guarantee exceeds what apple offers and costs far less. Finally the apps and content on the kids plus software are excellent. Apple doesn’t have anything like the breadth of content offered by kids plus and it’s all included for one year with the purchase price. I thought it was great that it’s not just games, but books, videos, and educational software as well. The content for the fantastic price of “free” is amazing and I can see paying the monthly fee for this after the year is up. It’s that good. Needs work: The games and apps are clearly tuned for the Kindle devices, but anything you do outside of just the kids plus software will seem very slow compared to iPads. If you are used to how an iPad immediately opens an app or menu, you will notice a lag when using the kindle. I would not recommend these for any sort of productivity. They are really only good for installed software. Any sort of web browsing and switching between apps, or opening third party apps (Netflix, Hulu, etc) will seem very slow by comparison. I will reiterate that for kids plus, these are fantastic, but don’t expect to use them for much else. Once an app is open they are ok, but moving between apps and doing admin tasks (changing passwords, updating profiles, etc) requires patience. Similarly, the non-kids software is fairly clunky. It operates on a modified version of Android and only having 2gb of system ram is very noticeable. You mainly see this when switching between your child’s profile and your own, which is necessary for many of the setup tasks needed to get the kindle ready for use for your kids. I often found myself wishing there was a way to access the adult menus from within the kids profile to save time, but alas, you have to switch to your profile, make updates, then switch back to your kids. In summary: If you can have some patience with the slowness of the device and the initial time needed for setup using the snails pace the system requires; this device is a no-brainer to entertain and educate your child. The parental software is excellent and easy to use to keep your kids safe. The device can easily and cheaply be upgraded to hold as many apps, books, and shows as your kid can handle. And the games, educational content, and books included with the 1 year free trial are consistently excellent. Finally, the 2 year, no worries guarantee will make sure no matter how hard your kid is on the device, Amazon will fix it for free. I give these my highest recommendation for young kids and tweens. Five out of five stars. I hope this has been helpful. ... show more

  • Wanted to Love
Digital Storage Capacity: 16 GB Color: Blue Offer Type: Fire 7 Kids
This is a very solid tablet. The build is nice, the protective case is exceptional for little ones, it feels good in your hands, it's lightweight, and it loads quickly. I bought 2, for our 5 & 1 year old. We have been using the Contixo tablets for years (starting with our 9 year old). They are similarly priced and built, but the Contixo tablets use Google/Android. I know, I know. :) I knew this didn't have Google, Google Play, or web access when I bought it. What I didn't realize was how important that was for us, OR everything else that losing that functionality meant. The downside to Contixo tablets is that they are sometimes slow & buggy. The Fire tablet is far more fast and smooth. But, alas, it just didn't meet OUR needs. The MAIN things for us were: 1. No YouTube Kids (my kids love YT Kids & use it regularly), 2. No FamilyLink parental controls mgr...or similar program (I'm accustomed to that specific interface. I pull up the FL app, it shows me the location of the item on Google Maps, I can ping the item if it is misplaced, I can set screen limits, I can control what sites they visit, I can see their history, I can set bedtime, I can immediately lock the item, and so much more. 3. No reliable way to ping the tablet or make it ring when lost/misplaced. Our house isn't huge, but it is spacious & has many nooks & crannies. My kids put things down in the darndest places. I need to be able to quickly log into an app on my phone, press "ring/find tablet" and hear the item (so I can find it, similar to my cell phone). We've been looking for 1 child's TV remote for 9 months and still haven't found it (lol). So, that functionality is a huge deal for us. I also missed the simple home screen on the Contixo tablets. I can setup exactly what apps I want them to see on the home screen (like a cell phone). The Fire tablet had too many different options, suggested apps, & icons on the screen. I didn't really see an option to hide those or customize that view. Again, the Fire tablet is beautiful, it just didn't suit our needs. It felt like an extension of my FireTV or Prime Video home screen from our TV. That is too busy for my kids' needs. They want to click & open every show they see (& some of them are not free). If you just need a portable way for your kids to watch programs/shows from Prime Video, this is golden. Otherwise, meh. 4. There also aren't any games. My kids love the little coloring, spelling, and word games (Google Play Store) on their Contixo tablets. Again, worth mentioning three times, I am still very, very surprised about not having a way to ring the item if it was lost. I couldn't even install Lookout or a similar program to help. This is a child's item. They misplace things. At this price point, that should be a no-brainer. So basically if they lose it or lay it down out of sight, you are S.O.L. until you come across it. I saw many moms complain about these same few issues. I'm sure Amz will fix it in the future. I'll repurchase then. Returned both for now. ... show more

  • Third Fire tablet purchased. 🔥 🔥 🔥
Digital Storage Capacity: 16 GB Color: Red Offer Type: Fire 7 Kids
You read that right-- this is in fact, the third tablet I've bought from Amazon. I bought the first in 2019, for my then 3 year old grandson's birthday. I figured it was best to introduce him to the digital world he had inherited, and besides, his mom was tired of him high jacking her phone for youtube videos. The kids fire 7 I got him then had a very sturdy blue case-perfectly designed to withstand the occasional flight across the room as a result of 3 year old tantrum. It came with a year's subscription to Amazon Kids+. A stellar plethora of educational and entertaining kids software if ever there was one. A year later, his little sister was ready for her own. A pretty bright pink case that has thus far withstood juice spills and the strange dance of the toddler on top of said case. (Why do they have to test every single thing by walking/dancing on it?) Along came another subscription free for a year. Combined with Amazon Prime content, these tablets got the family through a 1200 mile road trip and back this summer without their parents suffering severe trichotillamania. (Look it up). And that brings us here. To grandchild number 3--the wildest one yet. He's just two, but already commandeers his sibling's tablets and is mastering Amazon kid content like *Monkey Preschool" and surprises us with how much he's learned. So this Christmas he wants "Hohoho" to bring him a *papad*. (His sibs call the Fire tabs *iPad*. Shhh. Don't tell.) Got a great deal on Black Friday on this one. Truth be told, for all the great content, durability and sanity saving moments.. the Amazon Fire Kids tablets are priceless. One more thing-- thanks to the parental dashboard and controls, you can restrict content and limit screen time. ... show more
