I am personally not a fan of lash clumping. This thing helps with separating my lashes. Have to be careful and use a magnifying mirror or just get close to your mirror to not harm yourself. I go very slowly through my lashes a few times and you can see the clumps separate and sometimes mascara will get on the applicator between strokes so I clean it off a bit before continuing.
