Description

A picture book by Caldecott medal winner Matt Cordell about a timid squirrel who makes a brave journey to help a relative who is ill. Evergreen the squirrel is afraid of many things: thunder, hawks, and the dark paths of Buckthorn Forest. But when her mother tasks Evergreen with delivering soup to her sick Granny Oak, the little squirrel must face her fears and make the journey. Along the way, Evergreen is met by other forest dwellers – some want to help her, but some want her mother’s delicious soup! It’s up to Evergreen to stay the course, and those who help her will surprise and delight young readers. Using an art style reminiscent of the work of William Steig and Arnold Lobel, Matthew Cordell creates a classic tale of bravery and love. Read more

  • Love this book 💕
This book is great. Make sure to take the book protector off to see on the outside cover the map of forest. My daughter loves this story and it teaches her to believe in herself. This was a second copy because we gifted to a friend.

  • I laughed out loud
This was a delightful book that I laughed out loud reading there is a bit more text than what my toddler can sit through. But the preschooler loved it.

  • A Squirrel that Could
This was a sweet and an empowering tale of a little squirrel named Evergreen that was afraid of everything. However she was entrusted to take soup to her Grandma that had the flu. Her journey led to scary situations but she learned that she was capable. A great little story for both girls and boys. I’m definitely placing this as a book to gift to small children. ... show more

  • Courage & Adventure
Evergreen the squirrel finds herself on a surprising adventure when she's encouraged to buck up and face her fears. I love Matthew Cordell’s illustrations! His loose and expressive ink pen work is incredible. And, when you read this book, make sure to peek under the dust jacket for an awesome surprise… a map of Buckthorn Forest! ... show more
