The tone of these color-coded, thick-metaled keys is much better than tinny toy quality, and has many more keys than basic toys, enough to play actual music. The quality and true-pitched tone made me quickly wish to order rubber or wood-headed mallets to coax an even better tone from them, and better feel hitting the keys, and make the overall experience even more satisfying and enjoyable than using the (durable with bendable arms) plastic mallets provided. For best tone, one must hit the area with the note label in the center of the key. I was unable to coax a decent tone out of the highest F# key with the plastic mallet, but all the other keys are wonderfully dulcet. Part of what makes this the most inexpensive, yet very good quality, option is that the xylophone is built into the case, and is not removable. For this reason, I would not allow little kids to tote it around and potentially drop and break it, because the case is not that strong, though with a little kid, the distance to the floor is not far, and rugs or carpet should make dropping safe. The legs are also flimsy, but using them can allow even better tone and resonance. Some sort of padded zippered case would be great to have for this for drop-proned adults. Those cheap fabric, insulated bags that grocery stores sell with their name on it would be great to tote this around, or just a padded tote bag or backpack. You could keep the cardboard box it comes in for protection when transporting too and fro. This was a very good buy at $30 that it started out at, and is a great buy at $20, great as a gift for toddler and older birthday parties. Some instruments like this come with color-coded or note-named music for kids (or adults) to play, which would be wonderful to have with this. This one comes with a tiny flyer with miniscule treble-clef music, too small for adult or child use, as well as unreasonable to expect a small child to read actual music notation. One could xerox the music, greatly increasing its size before printing, for those who know music notation. I always wished for a better, more notes xylophone as a kid, so now I have one, which will go to future grandkids. This would be suitable as a gift for 3-10 year olds, and for use for all ages, including teachers of young children. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. Let me start by saying I play music (guitar), but I don't typically play xylophone, so forgive me if my terminology is off. I think this is a pretty good xylophone, especially for the price. It sounds really good, for the most part, though the low G doesn't ring as well as the other bars (why I gave 4 stars instead of 5, but it doesn't sound bad by any means). All of the sharp bars sound great. The storage case is really convenient and seems sturdy. The mallets fit perfectly in the case, and you could also fit some sheet music if you don't mind folding the paper (or if it's the size of half a sheet of 8x10). The back of the case works well for holding sheet music for practice (See the photo with 8x10 paper for scale. Sorry about the folds!). It would probably be able to hold a thin music book as a stand, but the book wouldn't fit into the closed case. It's very cute. The bars are colorful, and the same colors are used on corresponding notes up and down the scale, which I think would be useful for learning to play. It's also a lot of fun to play. My kids and I sat around taking turns on it multiple times now. It definitely makes a great beginner instrument, but I think it's also great for anyone who plays any music at all. I picked this up, as I'm into collecting small, portable sound-makers. Many of pieces I acquire are much closer to children's toys than a musical instrument. This particular Xylophone excels on all levels. The piece itself is very well-constructed, and appears quite durable. Small features really show the care that was put into creating this. There is venting at the bottom to allow for sound to project better, giving an exceptional quality that was unexpected from an instrument of this size. The included instruction-sheet contains music and guides, so you can easily learn to play some songs, right off the bat! It's been a blast, and is a fantastic addition to my "small instrument" collection. Overall, an excellent value for the cost - I'm impressed! Right out of the box, the vibrant rainbow keys made a great first impression — colorful, inviting, and clearly crafted with attention to detail. The build feels durable yet lightweight, which makes it easy to move around or store when not in use. What really surprised me was how good it sounds for the price. The tones are bright, clear, and surprisingly resonant — not tinny or flat like some cheaper models I’ve come across. Whether I’m playing simple tunes myself or watching the kids experiment with melodies, it delivers a genuinely pleasing musical experience. I’ve mostly kept it in my home office, and it’s become a fun little distraction during breaks. But it’s also been a hit during family gatherings — intuitive enough for young kids to enjoy without needing instruction, yet satisfying enough for adults to appreciate. Sounds like a professional instrument costing 5 times as much which makes this great value. The metal bar tones seem very much in-key and vibrant. The plastic case is good to keep the set together and safe. Build quality is excellent and a joy to play.
