  • first recorder for my daughter
Color: R08-BLUE
My 7 years daughter is curious about pretty much everything. She saw a couple of her older friends playing recorder at school and asked me for one through out the summer. First impression was not that great... color looked little cheap for my taste (but hey..this is only $8.99) and cotton pouch was not clean. But my daughter seems to like it alot. Overall, not bad for the money for a beginner. ... show more

  • Better than our last one
Color: R08-INORY
Two kids are taking music this year and have to have recorders. The teacher directed us to a few different brands to purchase, but I took a chance on this one. I love the color. It is a nice off white. It allowed me to get two different colors so the kids can keep them separated. It also came with a nice cloth drawstring bag and the cleaning rod. The sound is richer than the other we purchased though none of us really know how to play the recorder so I am not sure how much my review adds to this purchase. Ha! We have already deemed this an outside instrument! Hopefully they will learn lots from their music teacher before we have the end of the year recital. ... show more

  • Great basic recorder
Color: R08-BLUE
I ordered a -lot- of the inexpensive plastic 8 hole plastic recorders on Amazon in order to test them out and see what the differences are. I ordered the German style recorders from EAST TOP, Conjurer, SWAN, and Soulmate. I also ordered the baroque style 8 hole plastic recorder from Yonty. I’m posting this review for all of them. The big reveal: all the German style 8 hole plastic recorders are the same. The only way I can tell the difference between brands is by looking at the brand that’s stenciled on the recorder. The soulmate doesn’t have a brand marking. I ordered them all in different colors and the only difference I can find between them is the color. I would not be surprised at all if they all came from the same manufacturing line. Regarding that one baroque style recorder – the hole pattern is a little different from the German style, but that’s the only difference. Watch some videos to help you choose a fingering style. I chose German style because that’s what most of the people in my circle are familiar with. All of these recorders are three piece: head piece (includes mouth piece), middle (has most of the holes), and foot. The pieces can be swapped around for new color combinations. The baroque has a slightly different middle piece but is otherwise the same as the German style recorders. The fit and finish on all of them is good. They can all be washed in the sink and then set out to dry. How do they sound? … Pretty good! Much more expensive wood recorders seem to have a slightly richer sound. It’s a sound that I think of as the wood in woodwind. It may all be my imagination because I’m comparing these to a remembered sound when a concert musician played. The difference might have been technique, instrument, or bad memory. All that said, these inexpensive plastic recorders are not just toys. Are they fun? … Oh yes, they are fun. They are unreasonably fun. The main thing is that so very many people learned to play a song or two on the recorder while they were in elementary school (maybe middle school). People who went to school in different states learned the same song or two. Take a bunch of recorders to a gathering and be amazed at how much fun they are. ... show more

  • Nice recorder for beginners
Color: R08-INORY
This is a good recorder for a beginner and it is easy to hold. I wanted the more conservative ivory color, but there are a couple of brighter color options as well. It comes with a small-sized print leaflet that shows the German vs. Baroque fingering styles. The sound isn’t as rich as a wooden recorder I own, but it isn’t bad and most notes seem to be in tune. I like that it comes with a drawstring bag for storage or transporting as well as a tool/brush to clean it. ... show more

  • Good place to start
Color: R08-BLUE
The media could not be loaded. Music is much celebrated in our home so I wanted to involve my young kiddos in the joys of learning an instrument. The recorder is that quintessential starting point for many kiddos and when I saw this turquoise hued recorder, I couldn’t resist! I’ve attached a video, just for the sound, of me playing a little ditty. I have experience playing other recorders, but you can hear in spots that there were some issues with tone. The lower register sounds a little flat, but tone improves upon reaching midrange. I’m not wild about the bottom piece not being adjustable. It’s helpful being able to twist the lowest portion to enable easier fingering. I had to reach for it and wasn’t always successful. My kiddos are having a blast with their new “flute” so I really can’t complain. Wanting to play is the whole point, right? Overall, it’s aesthetically appealing, even if it’s not the most well-tuned; a decent place to start! ... show more

  • Woah!
Color: R08-INORY
For 10 bucks, it's worth at least that, just to see how one likes wind instruments. I had figured this would be like a cheapy, box-top 'toy' type of instrument, man was I wrong. Yes, it is "just" plastic, but it is the serious, heavy-duty type of plastic. The quality of the material as well as the manufacture are as top shelf as one could hope for; this is no 2-dollar toy whistle, that's for sure. As an instrument in general, the recorder isn't known for its sound, they do have that "cartoon" kind of sound, but as a learning device - I can see why it is what it is. This is part of the music encouragement plan my daughter and I have for my grandkids, even if they go a different route, having gotten to try out wind instruments makes this worth the time and cost. ... show more
