Delivery was on time, assembly was minimal, initial start up was easy. For the price it's hard to beat. I had to drill 50 21" holes for fence posts and that's about as deep as you can get out of this, unless you can get a longer bit. If it catches a rock be prepared to get a good yank on your arms. If it hits any rock at all its not going through it so have a digging bar and post hole diggers handy. I think it did 35-36 of my post holes with reasonable ease and I hand dug the rest. Great machine. ... show more

    • Better Quality and Warranty than Harbor Freight's Predator auger, worth another 120 bucks.
To early to give a full review, but I can give first impressions. This is thenthird one man auger I have purchased, the first was from harbor freight, it did well for about 2 tanks of fuel, which equated to approximately 30 to 40 post holes but after a year the motor started losing compression suddenly and then it just quit working, most likely a burnt up coil. Warranty out not worth trying to fix. The second lasted 5 minutes. It was immediately returned to Home Depot with a defective transmission, would not turn when placed on the ground, cant remember the manufacturer but it was orange and similar to the earthquake in size. This auger is noticeably made better than the 2 prior ones I purchased. The motor, while slightly smaller than the Harbor Freight auger, has plenty of power and takes less effort to start. Another good feature is the spring on the auger bit, it absorbs a lot of the torque that can occur if you encounter a root or rock or other solid object. In ground where no rocks qre encountered this thing makes quick work of a 24 to 30 inch post hole. So far, it does not seem to overheat or seize up under normal use, which I would consider to be 10 to 20 minutes at a time and restarting has bot been an issue. In the process of building a privacy fence for my daughter sonit will have the opportunity to dig another 20 or so holes to go with the 8 it has already dug on the first day of use. Bottom line: if comparing to the Predator model, the earthquake is easier to start, easier and safer to use, uses 50:1 fuel (25:1 in the Predator model), has a 8 inch auger with a spring compared to the 6 inch solid drive of the Predator. MOST IMPORTANTLY THE MOTOR HAS A 5 YEAR WARRANTY, the Predator had only a 90 day warranty. Pay the extra 120 bucks and get thr Earthquake. ... show more

First- I never write reviews, but this one deserves it. I bought this with very low expectations, lets be real- how good can an inexpensive auger be? I needed it for a week while I did a very long fence, and didn't want to spend $500 on a weeks rental for an auger. This thing performed so much better than expected. I Dug 27 holes 24-32" deep. It went through smaller roots no problem, and only had a problem with one bigger root, that even 2 person augers would have an issue with. Most holes took 1-2 minutes to dig.     • Can't return no matter what
Just wanted to let everyone know even though it sold as a Prime item it's non returnable under any circumstance! Amazon's web page states is returnable if defective or unopened, but Amazon will not except the auger motor no matter the reason in the return procedure. Likely do to the chance of it being shipped with gas mix in it, my assumption as to why. The unit I received was defective out of the box. Unpacked attached the auger to the power head and added fuel. Primed the motor and set the choke, was basically normal until I pulled the starter rope. On the third pull fuel pumped out the muffler on each piston stroke, not a good sign. Yes it does come with a warranty. After calling the manufacturer (hour and a half on hold) I come to find out the warranty is served via a network of independent repair stations. The manufacturer supplied the closest authorized center (four and a half hour drive one way) for repair. Cost of repair under warranty, nothing other than my time, gas and effort to and from the repair center. After getting it back from repair it seams to do an adequate job drilling 142 holes with a 10 inch auger in moist spring soil. Rocks larger about 2 to 3 inches in size creates problems as the auger just bounces over them and must be cleared by hand. If your drilling in hard pan soil or have lots rocks this unit will not serve your needs. ... show more
