Description

Life as an early settler in Texas was tough. Cattle rustlers stole people’s livelihoods, Native Americans fought back to reclaim their lands, and gunslingers walked the streets of the frontier towns. A. J. Sowell refused to let the memory of the early pioneers who settled on the southwest frontier die. As he states in his preface, “They bore the heat and burden of the day, and their deeds should live like monuments in the hearts of their countrymen.” Sowell’s book was written just at the point that camping grounds and tumbleweed towns were transforming into prosperous cities and provides insight into a world that has long vanished. Material for the book was drawn from interviews with men and women, such as “Big Foot” Wallace, Sarah J. Kinchaloe, and Henry Castro, who had lived on the frontier and experienced life in this wild region. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the old west and for those who wish to find out more about the lives of the pioneer men and women who transformed the famous state of Texas. Andrew Jackson Sowell was first of his family to be born in Texas after his relations moved to the area in 1830. His grandfather was involved in the Texas Revolution, as was his uncle, who served in the Alamo garrison but departed to obtain supplies prior to its fall. From 1870 November until 1871 June, he was a Texas Ranger in Company F of the Frontier Battalion, serving under Capt. David P. Baker. Drawing on his own experiences as a Texas Ranger, events in his relatives’ lives, family history, and interviews, Sowell wrote numerous books and articles about the early history of Texas. His books include Rangers and Pioneers of Texas, Life of Big Foot Wallace, Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest Texas, and History of Fort Bend County. Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest Texas was published in 1900. Sowell died in 1921. Read more

  • interesting stories
Format: Kindle
Great read to understand the mindset of the brave Pioneers of early Texas. Like a time travel machine, producing a minds eye picture of what it must’ve been like so long ago

  • The start of the history where I live.
Format: Kindle
I liked the stories of survival in a raw land. Additionally, the descriptions of how people traveled, dressed and talk was interesting. I taught some of the material in a Texas History class.

  • Great book on early Texas.
Format: Kindle
This is a great book on the early settlers of Texas and shows the hardships they had to endure. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Most of it is the old pioneers and rangers giving their recollections of the early times. It was written in 1897 or so. Memories fade with the years so some of the reflections may be embellished some. He names the men who rode on the trails of Indian raiders. Men who were killed in these raids. It also recorded exploits of the early Texas rangers naming then. If I had anything to criticize this book about is it sometimes got bogged down with the recording of the names. This is a must for anyone that had family in Texas during this time and was doing genealogy. Who knows you might find an exploit of your gggreatgrandfather in it. ... show more

  • Great historic accounts of early Texas Settlers
Format: Kindle
Great hardships were endured from the difficult and wild territories, to the Mexican government reversals of contracts made with American settlers as well as many Europeans (French, German, Prussian, and others), and the many Indian indigenous tribes in the area (at first friendly in trades and contracts with the settlers, but later mercilessly raiding stock and slaughtering and kidnapping settlers' children), forming the now Great state of Texas. A history many of us have forgotten, and others try to disparage. Personal connection as my great great grandmother, Catherine McLaurin, was one of those killed by a raiding party, and my great grandfather narrowly surviving, else my family line would have ended there. ... show more

  • Interesting
Format: Paperback
Very good work about early settlers on the Texas frontier. Very difficult times met with great courage. Just ignore the spelling errors.

  • A wonder any of us survived the early years of Texas!
Because of the small print and content (blood and gore) of this book, I'm having a hard time sitting down and reading it - though I pick it up several times a day and read some of it!

Other than several typos, it was a very good read. The history of Texas is full of famous people and events.
