The item itself is indeed wood but it is made of plywood and the surface was minimally prepared. There are numerous rough spots and areas that were not sanded. The finish is uneven. The holes for the shelf tabs had splinters sticking out. From a distance it looks good but up close not so much so. It is replacing an old particle board bookshelf, so it is a small improvement, but still disappointing. The item comes with a note stating it will have an odor, and it provides steps to minimize the odor. Well the odor is like a very strong oil-based paint. It did not help that the item was sealed in plastic so it could not breath prior to delivery. This was unexpected. I might add the finish was ever so slightly tacky when I first opened the box; indicating the item was just manufactured. Overall, the item gets a 5 out of ten, considering the price, Now onto the delivery. I get an automated phone call to schedule the delivery. The only date offered was not good for me. It took the system 10 minutes of repeating the unacceptable delivery date before it gave me a number to call. I called the number, and it tries to force me to use the automated system. It took a while to get a human. The representative was polite but useless. She did give me the number for the local depot where the items had been in storage for some time (it appeared to be over a week but this may be wrong, given the item was shipped with a manufacture date the day it was delivered - see the note about the odor) but it was not at the depot she gave me the number for. I called that number, and the representative was very nice but gave me a bad number for another depot in NJ. I had to call back to get the correct number for the NJ depot. Finally, I get a person in NJ who says it can be delivered tomorrow 11/24. I said fine, but I am not available in the morning. No problem, she scheduled it for the afternoon, and I received two emails stating it will be delivered in the afternoon. It should be noted that it took over an hour to get the delivery scheduled. AND you guessed it, I was preparing to leave for my morning appointment when the phone rings and the driver was just down the road. I waited and the dropped the box in the house and walked out. They did not unbox the item. They just walked out after taking a picture. I got the sense they just wanted to leave it in the driveway. This is a fairly large item and at 67, it was a challenge to get it out of the box. I used to work for my uncle delivering TVs and appliances and we would never just leave a box in the middle of the room. Totally unprofessional. If I could I would give the delivery service a negative number, but since the people who kept passing me along when trying to set the delivery date were nice I will give them a 2. About a week prior to this whole fiasco, I called Amazon support to check on the status of the item, since I initially expected delivery in the beginning of November, based on the dates shown next to the buy now button. They basically blew me off when I asked has it even been manufactured yet. Rate this as a zero. The average score is about a 2. I would not recommend this item.

(1) As another reviewer noted, there was a cheap plywood strip (about .5"x2"x14") attached underneath along both sides, sticking out at the front and back; this looked like it was intended to be permanent, but it looked pretty bad; it seemed to be a band-aid solution they had to do to keep the bookshelf from coming apart during use. (2) Shelves were loose and banging around during shipping, and had gouged the inside deeply. (3) The back, made of cheap thin plyboard, had come loose all around. (4) The front toepiece was loose. (5) The front frame was partially disattached from the rest of the bookshelf. (6) It was packed using styrofoam, which is a nightmare to clean up all those hundreds of little pieces. (7) Took about 60 days to arrive. Conclusion: I'm reasonably handy, and I have the tools and fasteners to do the repairs and reattachments. Don't buy this product if you aren't willing to do extensive repairs.

I'm very disappointed with the bookcase, it arrived later than scheduled, one part at the bottom was broken (my husband fix it, so now it's ok) and worse of all the refinishing is very poorly done, the bottom of the shelves are not finished, just stained without sealing, if you pass your finger it leaves it brown, also it smells so bad of fresh paint, so far it's been sitting in my garage for more than 2 weeks, I am unable to use it because it still stinks too much. We ordered both the small size and the tallest size at the same time, we haven't received the other bookcase yet and I'm just hoping it doesn't smell as bad!! My suggestion is don't buy it, just go to a store and pick something you can see and touch and if you need to return it at least it's easier!! Good Luck!!!
