To be clear, there is no higher level of armor protection for motorcyclists than CE Level 2; CE Level 2 armor is used by professional Moto GP riders that more often than not walk away from crashes that occur at well over 100mph (of course, they’re not tangling with cars on their closed loop race tracks). In practical terms, Level 2 protection can mean the difference between life and death, or about walking away from a fall, or not. Level 2 armor for motorcyclists is protective gear that meets strict European safety standards, designed to absorb twice the impact force than Level 1 armor. While the protection of Level 1 will keep transmitted forces to below 18 kN, Level 2 provides twice the protection, limiting an impact force to 9 kN or less. CE stands for “Conformité Européenne,” a certification indicating that the armor in question has undergone strict tests that look at impact resistance, material quality, and overall protection, ensuring that it meets strict European safety standards. Duhan’s Armored Shirt utilizes both Level 1 and 2 armor pads; level 2 for the elbows and shoulders and Level 1 for the chest and back. I’m not clear what the logic would be for not using Level 2 all around, but hopefully it isn’t to reduce the cost, since the difference between the two isn’t particularly significant. There is a slight difference in flexibility, but the chest and back aren’t areas of the body that flex much compared to the arms and legs, but anyway, it is what it is. But the fact is, I’d rather break a collar bone than my back. The spandex infused shirt fabric makes it stretchy, and with all seven pieces of the armor installed, it’s surprisingly comfortable, as well as breathable; I’ve worn the shirt fully armored for a few hours without any discomfort. Visually, although they make an obvious enhancement to the shoulders, the underlying pads are basically innocuous. Additionally, I don’t even notice them after a few minutes of being in the shirt; it has quite a bit of stretch to it. The protective pads are either made by, or in collaboration with, RZ-Labs, a Chinese company specializing in high-tech impact resistant foams and 3D printed protective armor for a variety of applications including speed skating, motorcycling, football and so forth. Their technology is interesting; for those interested, I’d suggest checking out their website. Inserting all of the pads is done with the shirt inside out and the various built-in pockets are sewn in a manner that holds each of the armor components in the appropriate form fitting orientation, for example, the elbow pockets keep the elbow pads rounded so they conform to the shape and bend of an elbow. My first impression when I saw the pockets was “how is the armor ever going to fit in these,” but as it turns out, that between the spandex component of the shirt’s fabric and the high flexibility of the armor, slipping everything in was almost effortless; don’t be afraid to bend and manipulate the armor as needed, it bounces right back into shape. I also own a pair of Duhan’s CE Level 2 certified Shin and knee guards which engender the same technology and high-quality workmanship as this armored shirt jacket. I’ve come to appreciate Duhan’s transparency, the quality of their products and their consistently stylish design aesthetic. In addition, they take a serious, professional approach to safety, as evidenced by their CE certification. I feel that they provide excellent value along with high-tech safety in a visually appealing garment, not to mention, peace of mind while riding. Moreover, they appear to be a North American company that specializes in providing safety products specifically for motorsports. I perused their Amazon store and found a couple of examples of stunning motorcycle jackets; however, they are all “currently unavailable.” Hopefully, we see more of Duhan.

As an Amazon Vine Voice member and a motorcycle enthusiast, I’m always looking for gear that bridges the gap between casual comfort and serious protection. The DUHAN Motorcycle Jacket Shirt is a unique piece of gear that offers a surprisingly high level of armor for a "shirt" style garment, making it a great choice for warm-weather rides. Protection and Armor (The Big Pros): The standout feature of this shirt is the comprehensive armor set. It comes with a full set of CE-rated armor, which is a massive win at this price point. Specifically, the elbows and shoulders are CE Level 2, while the back and chest are CE Level 1. Finding a shirt or jacket that includes back armor (instead of a flimsy foam pad) is great, but including chest armor is incredibly rare. Another plus is the quality of the armor itself—it has no chemical or "noxious" smell right out of the box. With some other brands, you have to let the armor air out for days before you can stand to wear it, but this was ready to go immediately. Build Quality and Comfort: The shirt is made of a very nice, stretchy material that provides excellent breathability. It’s perfect for those hot days on the trails or as a base layer under a leather jacket that doesn't have its own armor. The rubberized strip at the bottom is a thoughtful addition; it effectively keeps the shirt from riding up your back while you're moving around on the bike. The stitching and overall material quality are solid, with no blemishes or loose threads typical of lower-priced gear. It also offers UPF protection, which is a nice bonus for sun safety. The 4-Star Drawback: Significant Sizing Issues: The primary reason for the 4-star rating is the sizing inconsistency. I ordered the 2X-3X, and even though the sizing chart suggested a much smaller size for my 34" waist, this shirt fit very tightly—like a second skin. Considering my standard DUHAN motorcycle jacket is an XXL and fits well, this shirt runs much smaller than expected. There is no way the recommended S-M would have fit. When ordering, you should definitely plan to size up significantly. Value: At $80, this is a good value. You are essentially paying for a high-quality set of CE 2/CE 1 armor and a well-ventilated, UPF-rated protective shirt. It provides the impact protection of a full jacket with the comfort of a base layer. Conclusion: This is an excellent all-around motorcycle shirt for warm-weather trail riding or as an armored under-layer for street jackets. It provides superior protection thanks to the included chest and back armor, provided you can navigate the tricky sizing. Just remember to size up, and you’ll have a very capable piece of safety gear. 4 out of 5 stars!
