I've always loved Dr Marten shoes. I've owned several pair over many many years. I usually stick with two different styles. This style has a more stiff upper ankle and the other is the padded ankle (brown shoe in the photo). Both are incredibly comfortable and can last what seems like forever. This stiff upper ankle style can take a few days to break in. When I first put them on, I have to wear thick socks as I always tend to get a blister where the upper portion rubs against the back of my foot. However, after wearing a couple times, this is no longer an issue. The leather stretches and softens pretty quickly. That's the one reason why I sometimes where the other style. I mostly wear the other style if I'm going to be doing a lot of walking. To me, these shoes are workhorses. They can handle a huge amount of abuse. While (to me) they are incredibly great looking, I usually am wearing these for working around the house or the car. I prefer the black when I'm working on my car. They can maintain a nice look regardless if I scuff them or get some oil/grease on them. The sole is also nearly indestructible and great when working on slippery surfaces I've read some reviews where people can tell the difference on newer vs older and where they are manufactured. Perhaps I've been pretty lucky, but I haven't had any issue with these shoes. I'm wondering if they somehow are purchasing knock-offs. I'll continue to buy Dr Marten shoes as long as they are in existence and they maintain the high quality and relative good value. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these to anyone. ... show more

These shoes are made in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam - not noted on the sole of the shoe or on the Box? It is stamped inside - not sure why this is the case - I find the build quality to be great. Perhaps they are somewhat large - but this allows for an insole if this becomes an issue - right now I just lace them snug. I have found saddle soap helps leather break-in and use that on most of my leather - chairs, car seats, I see several posting of separated soles on the Amazon site. Folks indicate the shoes are only 6 months old - yet looking at the photo's the uppers are in horrible shape for only six months of service. I liked these so much I actually purchased a second pair of the same shoe - as a price for the complete pair is about the same as a new sole. ... show more

The Dr.Marten shoe I purchased, the 1461 one,is to replace my old pair. When I say old I mean used,abused and weathered. This is definitely a manly shoe, and looks great when wearing. I have had my old pair for 6 yrs.+and I bought them used! Who knows how long they had been worn by the initial buyer....Altho the shoe looks clunky, as I prefer tennis shoes or loafers , but surprisingly they aren't all that heavy. The stitching is still holding the shoe together nicely but the rough treatment and wear I put the old ones through finally the leather uppers developed holes in them.Thankfully I have been wearing these shoes for working outside and have dropped a number of heavy items on my feet while wearing them.So the holes are not unusual whatsoever. Not only are the Dr.Martens, a favorite work and dress shoe fore they are reliable and durable and well worth what I paid for these new ones.I am not a punk rocker( a necessary item in their decor) , bit a 65 year old man who loves a solid , and comfortable shoe at a reasonable price. I cannot recommend the Dr. Marten brand highly enough.Please be sure to treat the shoe with Neatsfoot oil or other conditioner firstly and it will last as long as mine did....or longer. ... show more

    • One major flaw

I have unusually shaped, quite wide feet and it is very difficult to find comfortable shoes. There are a couple brands that I can rely on that just seem to have a format that they follow, regardless of actual "model," where they tend to just fit. For this reason I haven't bought a lot of new shoes, and as old standbys fall out of production I have an increasingly limited number of shoes I can replace them with. Over the years, I've had many friends get Docs and have been relatively pleased with them, so I thought I'd give them a shot since they were reputed as being comfortable. Unlike Eccos, which are my usual go-to, they are made of reasonably hard leather and have a pretty long breaking-in process. My biggest complaint, however, is the backs of the heels. The stitching in the middle, along the back, is very hard, and very sharp. After only a couple days they had irritated my Achilles' tendons very severely, and I was worried that they wouldn't be tenable in the long term. Instead, I invested in some heel liners and it made a world of difference. Most of the shoes I've worn besides these have had cushioned, slightly raised heel backs. Without that, the heel liners have been a necessity. But besides that one complaint, I'm glad to have found another brand of shoes that fit my feet, and more importantly, the soles of the shoes themselves are very comfortable and I can spend a lot of time on my feet without feeling any fatigue. And, at the price they're at, I can afford to potentially replace them more than once every two or three years. Only time will tell how long the soles hold up, but they are at least thicker than the soles on the Eccos, which wear through in only about a year. ... show more
