Description

The 1490 is a classic Dr. Martens punk silhouette with higher laces and more attitude. It features all the distinctive Doc details: grooved sides, yellow stitching and heel-loop. Built to last, this unisex boot is forged using one of the finest methods of construction: utilizing a Goodyear welt and heat- sealing it to the sole. The 1490 is made with highly durable leather and sits on an AirWair sole, which is oil and fat resistant with good abrasion and slip resistance. Use Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam to protect the leather and keep your boots clean, soft and supple. Channel your fierce inner girl rocker with the 1460 boot from Dr. Martens. Its iconic leather upper is spiced up with vivid attitude while the thick lug sole puts that certain toughness in the silhouette. Lace up a perfect fit and hit the town like a rock star in this fun find. P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history. See more

  • Great boots, i love 'em to death
i love these. theyre true to size, easy to break in, and sexy as hell. what more could you want? Edit: 5/28/15 So it's like 2.5 - 3 years later and these boots are still going strong. They are extremely comfortable now, i remember when i first got them, i was worried that maybe i got the wrong size because of how tight they were across the top of my feet, right at the spot where the tongue is sewed to the main body of the shoe. That tightness went away pretty quickly, i think "i broke them in" in about a week. Now theyre really, truely broken in (like i said, it's been years) and oh my lawd these shoes feel so soft and delicious, they just melt onto your feet like a pat of butter does on a stack of pancakes. lmfao. They truly are extremely comfortable now. Before they felt like boots but now, more like thick soft warm socks (with soles on the bottom, lol) that just caress your feet as you slide them inside. Wear Over time, some of the design has come off, but not very much, only around the toes where i frequently scuff them. Also, absolutely do not try to clean these with acetone ( pretty much nail polish remover) because while the shoe will be perfectly fine, the white paint splatter design will smudge and come off INSTANTLY (there's a little smudgy area on one of mine from where i learned that lesson the hard way). Cleaning and Maintenence I did find that it was pretty worthwhile to invest in a dr. martens shoe kit. I'm not sure what it's officially called but that's essentially what it is. It comes with wonder balsam (i think that's a brand thing that dr. martens made up but it seems to be some sort of hydrating wax) that can make shine like new dimes no matter how rough on them you are ( but really polishing them up takes time, elbow grease, and lots of layers of balsam, i usually just put on 2 layers but i'm sure 3 or 4 would be better). Anyway, the kit comes with 2 extra pairs of shoe laces that are the right length for this 10 eye boot (i'm on the 2nd pair of laces that came with them now). It also comes with a bright yellow cleaning/ polishing cloth and some other type of boot polish that i cant remember the name of at the moment. Anyway, the reason i went out of my way to recommend this kit for maintaining this particular pair of boots is that neither of the polishes that come with the kit are tinted. They all go on clear and bring the shine back to your leather and of course the last thing you would want to put on these is traditional black shoe polish because that would just cover up the amazing design on them and probably look a tad odd as well. Motorcycle Duribility I ride a motocycle year 'round and these shoes held up pretty well for that for about a year and a half of almost constant wear, at that point i began to notice that the tread was wearing down. Now dont get me wrong, there is PLENTY of tread left on those soles. you cant wear through the bottom of these like you can with a pair of converse, however, they just loose traction far too easily now for me to wear them as my main bike shoes anymore, especially in inclement weather. If there is the tiniest bit of moisture on the ground, when i put me feet down at stop lights and such, i'm slipping and losing my grip on the ground because the bottoms of the shoes have just become too smooth. i've never truly slipped and dropped the bike and everything (how embarrassing would that be!) but it's certainly worth mentioning that these dont last too long as motorcycle boots. I can (and do) still wear them (all the time) and if youre not a motorcyclist, i doubt you'll even be able to incur the amount of wear that mine have (they grind up against the pavement as i cruse to a stop and the left one has the same tell tale wear marks that all my left boots have that comes from the pressure and friction of my switching gears with that foot when i drive. If youre just a seasonal rider then you'll get much more that a year and a half out of these, but i put mine though the wringer by riding every day, year round, in the rain, ice, and sun. lol, and on the snowy days i may not have been riding but i was still rocking these. Overall Durability I am much harder on my shoes than the average joe but i can say with certitude that these shoes will last me (and you) for years and years. After a while you'll begin to understand how doc martens got their reputation for being indestructible. Even with the harsh, snowy winters these have seen and the hot, dusty summers, and the wet and squishy springs, (and some other thing for fall) they still look incredible, the design is still totally in tact (save for the areas where i always scuff the toes and my little acetone accident). With a little balsam, my neglect ( i rarely clean, shine, or condition the leather. literally once in a blue moon) seems to just wipe away as the gorgeous black leather imbues the moisture and somehow manages to become even more supple then they were when i started. Also, this may seem like common sense, but i'll just thow it out there; just because theyre sturdy and leather doesnt mean theyre water-proof. trust me, theyre not water proof. Now dont get scared, water doesnt hurt them at all and you can certainly wear them on a rainy day and have them keep your feet warm and dry, but if there is a total deluge of water, if it's pooring from the sky in sheet, do yourself a favor and do not strap these boots on unless you like sloshing around with water logged feet. lol Overall At the end of the day, i stand bt my original review. These shoes rock. They look great, they feel great (the longer you've had them the better they feel. they age like fine wine. haha), theyre totally functional and they'll last you a long, long time. Totally worth the investment, and that's saying a lot coming from a cheapskate like yours truly. If youre on the fence just take the plunge and buy them. you'll regret nothing once theyre on your feet :) ... show more

  • Disappointing
Size: 11 Women/10 Men Color: Black Smooth
Purchased these last October because I’ve been a loyal doc marten customer since the 80’s never needing to replace my boots just wanting new ones adding to a collection of sizes. These tore? Right where the wide part of my foot resides now has ac and rides the side soul. Very disappointed in the life span of these for $200 lasting a year? Doc marten, you should replace these for a loyal customer! ... show more

  • Son likes theses boots
Size: 9 Women/8 Men Color: Navy Smooth
Myself, I don’t see the hype, but the kids do. It’s made well but as a boot it’s more a fashion than a boot. So if style and not dryness or warmth rule, then it’s just fine.

  • Runs large and it’s a good thing
Size: 6 Women/5 Men Color: Black Greasy
Love the way it fits. I usually wear a size 6.5 and ordered a size 5. With a layer of Dr Scholls and Smartwool socks, feet are snug and comfy! Look forward to a few months/years after the newness wears off.

  • Great Boots: Wide Feet Buy 1 size up
Size: 11 Women/10 Men Color: Green
Great Boots: Wide Feet Buy 1 size up! Short review: if you have wide feet, and are a man, buy one size up from the recommended size. Wear them around the house for a week. After a week, the leather will break in around the heel and rub/move. Buy a Dr. Scholl's gel insert for work boots, trim to fit, and you have the perfect size boot. Long review: I have wide feet. I take an 8.5 EE, this size fits perfectly in the Timberland Earthkeepers 8.5 EE, but in the Rockport boots I take a 9 E. So shoe sizes vary and I understand that. I'd give the boot five stars, except I now have an expensive mistake. I went with the advice on Doc Marten's own website and the Amazon sizing guide, and bought a UK 8 which is the equivalent to a US 9 Medium. This has worked for me with a number of shoes. A number of reviewers have said the shoe runs "wide." I can only presume they have narrow feet or are women buying the men's style shoe, given that even women with wide feet will have narrower feet than men with wide feet. I've worn the boot too long to return them, in a vain attempt to "break them in." I will just have to sell them elsewhere I guess. On a hunch, I bought a size large (i.e. a UK 9, not a UK 8, which is equivalent to a US 10 Medium). Fit great, until the heel as noted above broke in and the leather around there started rubbing up and down. A quick trip to your favorite Large-Mart superstore and for $10 Dr. Scholls had me covered. Perfect fit. I like boots, with large toes I tend to get movement up and down the heel with a low cut shoe and with a boot you can dial in by lacing the upper part boot movement in the heel to an astonishing degree. Doc Martens are also VERY comfortable once broken in. Yes the Air Ware is old technology, so are V8 Engines, rear wheel transmission (featured on half a million dollar supercars like Bugattis and Ferarris) and other proven stuff. With the Doc Martens alone, absent the gel inserts, I find them at least as comfortable, maybe more so, than the Timberland "anti-fatigue technology." It is important to be clear what Doc Martens are, and where they work well for people. They are essentially a dress work boot for concrete and other hard surfaces. They were originally sold after all to UK factory workers and British Postmen, who love them. The patent leather gives them a dressy look, and polish allows you to keep them clean and neat. If you are on your feet a good part of the day on hard surfaces like me you'll appreciate them. Doc Martens don't have the aggressive tread that works so well in Rockports or Timberlands in ice, snow, mud, and muck. If you are looking for a boot for back-east Mud season, look elsewhere (I live fortunately in Sunny Southern California). Docs do alright in the rain, in getting you in and out of puddle-strewn parking lots. They are not waterproof like some Timberlands and Rockports though. Docs look nicer, are more dressy, and more rock-and-roll than Timberlands, the favorite of rappers and (in one Seinfeld episode), George Costanza. Fashion-wise, yes girls like them a lot, but so does Penn Gillete the magician, who wears them in his Vegas shows. Docs being a dress work boot, have a fully gusseted tongue, unlike most Timberlands and Rockports. I have a pair of Carolina Logger workboots with the same feature. This will press down on the top of your foot until the leather softens up, and is a feature of all good workboots. Which have the gusseted tongue to keep out debris and dirt from the inside of the boot. This is why I suggest for wide feet people, break the Docs in WITHOUT THE GEL INSERT first, and then when the heel starts to move put the gel insert in so the tongue is already broken in and does not press down hard on your foot. I would recommend a thick cotton crew sock. These socks can be found almost anywhere, are cheap, and easy to replace when they inevitably wear out. No need to go with a pricey wool sock. They are easy to wash too. Docs go well in a dress casual environment, and can be in a pinch paired with a suit for a rock-and-roll dressy look, much better than say Timberlands which are strictly jeans/khaki casual. Just remember, if you have wide feet, go one size up from the recommended size. ... show more
