  • I decided that an electric kettle would do just fine when it came to warming bottles
Style: Deluxe
I read through the reviews here before I bought this warmer, and I know a few people had some issues but I forget precisely what they were aside from the one reviewer who was simply aghast at the prospect of actually having to clean something that is used to feed their child, so forgive me if any of this is redundant. TL;DR the annoyances are worth the conveniences. As many new mothers are wont to do, I scoured the internet for opinions when I created my baby shower registry. I thought I'd never have children, and was really just overwhelmed with all of the conflicting opinions regarding whether or not a bottle warmer is actually a necessary item to have. As I am a tea drinker, I decided that an electric kettle would do just fine when it came to warming bottles. My mother told me that when I was a babe, the method was to boil a pot of water and just stick the bottle right in the pot. In my mind, using an electric kettle would be exactly the same except the water would heat quicker and I'd need an extra bowl. ALAS! Six months and two kettles later, I've finally acquiesced to the fact that electric kettles are simply not made to be used as often as infants require sustenance. And so, after two different brands of kettles bit the dust, I decided it was time to give warmers a chance. Now, my daughter is not that picky about temperature, and if I made bottles to order, she would drink them room temperature no problem and I would just admit that the naysayers were right and I shouldn't have bothered warming bottles in the first place. However, some kind soul along the way had already clued me in to another genius product -- Dr. Brown's Formula Mixing Pitcher and I was already hooked on the idea of having a day's worth of formula prepared in advace. Despite my background as a bartender, I have more confidence in this pitcher's ability to mix formula than my own ability to shake a bottle well enough to eliminate formula clumps (especially during the early morning and middle of the night feeds). I find the pitcher indispensable. This means that more often than not, bottles come from the pitcher in the fridge and cold formula just will not do. Since I had such success with the pitcher and remembered seeing this warmer mentioned around the internet while researching, I decided to give it a shot. Disclaimer: I LOVE cleaning things that will be used to feed my daughter. I will clean them all day if that's what I have to do to prevent her from getting sick due to contamination or some such thing. I accepted my fate as a forever-cleaner the moment I saw the pink lines on the pregnancy test. So, to get down to it -- I had trouble deciding whether to give this product 3 stars or 4. The first reason is that the up and down arrows occasionally stick. Sometimes they work perfectly fine, but I find it difficult to adjust the time quickly and efficiently because if I hold the up or down button, the time clock goes haywire and I have to start all over again. I don't seem to have this issue if I just press the appropriate button multiple times, but this is really inefficient and annoying when you need to change the time setting more than maybe 30 seconds. While it is frustrating and annoying, it's not a dealbreaker. I'm still not sure if this is just a defect with my particular warmer or if it's a defect with the product on the whole, but it's something I can live with now that I know how to handle it. This leads me to a feature that I wish the product *did* have, which is "express" or pre-set time buttons similar to those on a microwave. I would love it if I could press a "3" for 3 minutes or "5" for 5 minutes, or a +10 or +30 to add 10 or 30 seconds on to the time. I would be willing to pay more for a product that offered this convenience. I haven't done enough research to know whether or not such a warmer already exists or not, but it would be nice. Also, the manual offers guidelines as far as how long a bottle ought to be warmed to get the perfect temperature. There are suggestions for sterilizing pacifiers, 2oz of liquid, 4oz of liquid, and 8oz of liquid. My daughter's bottles are routinely 6oz of liquid, so I was a little dismayed that I had to fiddle around a little bit more to find the perfect temperature. I have experimented with the recommended times and found that their definition of the "perfect temperature" generally makes the bottles just barely warmer than room temperature, so I had to add on some time anyway. I went with 4 stars because the fiddling was worth the eventual convenience. The beeping sound the warmer makes when it's finished is not as obnoxious as many other appliances, I like that it heats with steam and can be used to sterilize other items, and I like that it fits many different bottles. It takes up less space than my "kettle + bowl" contraption, it's easy to fill and clean, and once you've found the perfect temperature, it's really great to not have to stand there shaking and testing multiple times to make sure it isn't too hot. Just one test and off you go! ... show more

  • So Glad We Found It
Style: Deluxe
My wife and I have a four-month old daughter, completely formula fed. For months 1 & 2, we would either a) pour the newly opened formula into the bottle at room temperature and feed it to our daughter or b) if the bottle was open and in the fridge, we would frantically try and run warm water into a Tupperware and then wait with the bottle in the water for what we hoped was the appropriate time for it to warm up before feeding. It was working ok, but a bit of a process. I was initially hesitant after reading a few reviews, but will never go back from this Dr. Brown's bottle warmer. Once you have a the timing down as described in the manual, it is quite easy and because you are feeding your child similar ounces many times a day, you will have the appropriate times down in no time. And it takes all of the guessing out of whether or not the bottle is sufficiently warmed. If you have warmed it for the designated time, it comes out the same each time. There were two drawbacks I saw from reviews. The first was that you need to fill it with either distilled (recommended) or tap water. First, it IS a small hole to fill the chamber that feeds the system, but if you fill it over a sink, you might lose a little water, but you will not make a mess. And secondly I do wish there were a warning when the water level was low, but the water seems to last about a day (or a little more), so as long as you check and fill it in the morning or night, you will be fine. We use distilled water and it takes a couple of weeks to work our way through a gallon of distilled water We actually bought this only to warm the open refrigerated bottles, but soon found that our daughter would not even accept the unopened room-temperature bottles after consistently using this device to heat the cold bottles. Now we bring it everywhere and use it for every bottle. Our daughter is happy, which is what matters most... :) ... show more

  • Will not be purchasing a third.
Style: Deluxe
We got one of these after seeing great reviews and initially, we loved how quickly it warms bottles. However, the water reservoir opening is microscopic and has to be refilled often so imagine it being 2am, your baby is screaming bloody murder, and you are trying to fill (in the dark) this fingernail size hole. Then you have to turn the reservoir upside down to put it back in the warmer. Plan to keep this beside a sink and with a towel. Further, it’s a complete pain to put the *special* lid on every time you warm a bottle and said lid has to be cleaned (or rinsed at the very least) every time because it gets milk condensation on it. the warmer comes with 1 lid. The first warmer got really gross within a month. A hazy looking residue would build up inside the reservoir and in the bottom of the machine. Then that rusted. You couldn’t use it because of the smell, even after cleaning and re-cleaning in every way you can imagine. Thinking it was user error, we got another and vowed to always use the *special* lid. We even purchased a 3 pack so we could rotate and not have to wash after every bottle. Needless to say, we are back with a stinky, smelly, useless machine and we are using a Kiinde that takes twice as long but has lasted 9 months. ... show more
