  • Teaches you your pets nutritional needs.
If you’re looking for recipes and don’t need to know if your pet’s nutritional needs are met, look elsewhere. This book teaches you exactly how much micronutrients, macronutrients & vitamins your pet needs. Yes there are recipes in the book, but since pets vary in size, age and needs, you need to build the recipes yourself according to your specific pets needs. It gives you the “recipes” or “building blocks” for veggie recipes, meat recipes and supplement recipes and you combine them to your pets needs and insures that all needs are met by varying the recipes on a weekly basis. I’ve purchased several dog cookbooks and had yet to find one that covered all nutritional needs, until I found this book. In fact, this book actually helped me calculate just how many important nutrients that are lacking in the recipes in those other pet cook books. But as other reviews state, you actually have to read the whole book and take notes, before you can start making food. To make recipes, you do have to flip back and forth between the meat recipes and veggie recipes, which can be frustrating for some. You also have to buy a small arsenal of vitamins, bonemeal and oils, but worth it to know that everything is covered in the right amounts together with the foods. The biggest minus has nothing to do with the book, but the fact that I realized that I need to buy a chest freezer to fit 1 months worth of food for my giant dog. Oh well. In summary, you’ll get cooked recipes, raw recipes and supplement recipes. The recipes don’t include grains or legumes, which for some are up to debate whether are not are needed. However, it suggests you add taurine which there’s not in grain free diets, so nutritionally your pet should be covered, especially if your concerned about heart diseases like DCM. ... show more

  • This is a good book
I really wanted to do some justice to this book because I went through the reviews before buying and found plenty of complains about how convoluted the book is and how is supposedly quite difficult the implement. Main complains were the reader has to jump from section to section to be able to use it in a practical sense. While there is some truth to that once you understand the principal of how the author is building the food mixes then is quite straight forward. You only have to choose your recipe, know how much you need to feed your pet and everything else is spelled out. The se one complain I remember is about vitamin and mi erales supplementation. Plenty of people complained about how impractical would be to home make your own pet supplement. As matter of fact is not difficult. The book tells you which supplement brands they used. All you would have to do is buy and crush tablets and that is it. The only thing that was initially confusing is seeing food proportions both in cups and pounds but once you realize the author is just equating tow ups to one pound then you don’t need to pay attention to the cups measures (unless you want to be confused) ... show more

  • Good information - but still confusing
This book has very good information and the recipes are simple to make. But.... I am not clear on the supplement part. Yes, she tried to adjust for Sardines, no Sardines, eggs, no eggs - but it would really help to have the supplements combined with the recipes, so you have a full recipe with everything you need. The feeding schedule is not as easy as it looks. My cat does not eat a lot fo food at one time. We tried the 2 meals per day without success - she only eats a few bites and goes and plays, sleeps, plays some more and comes back for a couple more bites. She does not eat much in general. She is the perfect weight for her size and age and is very active - we take her out 2x a day on a leash and she runs and climbs. I always wanted to try raw feeding, so at least I made it to raw freeze dried, but I have to feed her about 5x a day and no more than maybe a teaspoon at a time. Which I do not mind the least as I work from home. I also would not mind making these recipes and just splitting the portion up into small sizes. But the adding of supplements makes this complicated. Mine is not fond of eggs or sardines - so supplements have to be added. I was trying to find a holistic vet down here in Miami - impossible. The vet I had, who had no problem with feeding raw, unfotunately left and the one that came after her tells me that kibble is good for her teeth - he is young and not too long out of vet school. So no help on that front either. Very long story short, I like the information in this book, but I am missing the complete recipes with everything included. So I would give 5 stars for information, but 3 stars for organization and complete recipes. ... show more

  • wow, very complete book, kindle version works 100%
Prior to purchasing this book i read a ton of reviews and got a bit discouraged, so i decided to start slow and get library books. I read them and ended up using one of them. Hungry for more information after trying to formulate my own meals i decided to read the sample of this book was a great sample by the way i was hooked and ended up purchasing the kindle version regardless of warning (quality issues reported) because i simply could not wait the shipping time and I’m so glad i did, because i found NO issues after reading 100% of the book in fact you can maximize each graph to view it on a whole separate page which is nice. Book does have a-lot of information so i would suggest to have something handy to take notes, because you will need all your notes to make your balanced meal. I did not take notes at first and after finishing it i had to go back and take notes. Ive only read this 4th edition and it seems to be more flexible with ingredients than other versions. At first will be a bit overwhelming but it all makes sense once you finish the book. Remember take notes very important, and re read as needed the second or third time will make sense specially for the nutrients. ... show more

This is a good book, it has a lot of useful information. However, there are many typos in the book.
