Description

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A fascinating and enlightening deep dive into the infamous Disney Adult community from the woman behind the popular website The Disney Food Blog. Disney Adults are grown-ups who derive singular, almost obsessive, joy from all things Disney. They devote countless hours and millions of dollars to Disney offerings, whether or not they have children. They’re avid fans of the films, devotees of the Disney theme parks, collectors of the vast world of Disney merchandise, cosplayers who dress in clothing inspired by Disney characters. Their ranks are so large and their cultural impact so distinct that they have their own moniker and are an economic force unto themselves. They’re often maligned in the larger culture and put on a particularly high pedestal of cringe. But in truth, their obsessive fandom hints at a universal desire for pleasure and joy, for magic and escape. There are darker sides to Disney mania that can’t be ignored, but the ranks of the Disney Adult community are broad, deep, and ever-growing. Disney Adults are a telling microcosm of modern America, highlighting the value we place on magic and escapism, and what we deem to be “acceptable” sources of joy. Disney Adults dives deep into a misunderstood subculture, exploring the lives and experiences of a fascinating community to better understand its devotees’ unwavering passion for all things Disney, why it offends, and why it matters. • A must-read for every Disney fan!
Format: Hardcover
1. My Use Case • I bought this book because a friend recommended it. I already watch AJ Wolfe on her YouTube channel and really enjoy her style, so I thought I’d give the book a try. • I purchased it in August, and it took me about a month to finish. 2. Pros (What I Liked) • It isn’t written like most other Disney books. I don’t usually enjoy Disney “tips” books because I already know a lot of the information, but this one focused more on history and fascinating facts. AJ did tons of research and even included survey results, which made the book feel thoughtful and high quality. • The short, easy-to-read chapters made it simple to pick up even when I only had a few minutes to read. I loved that it didn’t require a big time commitment to stay engaged. • This book would appeal to any Disney lover—whether you’re new to Disney or already an expert. 3. Cons (What Could Be Better) • I honestly wish it had been longer or already had a sequel! I truly loved everything about it. 4. Performance / Real-Life Testing • The hardcover has held up perfectly, even after carrying it everywhere. • It’s perfect for quick reading sessions whenever you have a spare moment. • It’s packed with fun facts—I loved sharing what I learned with my family! 5. Who This Product Is Best (and Not Best) For • 👍 Best for: Anyone interested in Disney, Disney history, or hearing new perspectives from Disney fans. • 👎 Not great for: Someone who isn’t interested in Walt Disney or the Disney company. 6. Overall Impression I was surprised by how much I loved this book! I’m a big Disney fan, but I’m often disappointed by Disney books that just rehash tips I already know. This one was totally different—engaging, well-written, and full of new information. Every time I picked it up, it took me to my happy place. I didn’t want it to end, and I really hope AJ Wolfe writes another book soon! ... show more

  • Surprisingly deep
Format: Hardcover
I begin this by saying I am both very much an oldhead Childless Millennial(tm) Disney Adult and a very long time subscriber to DFB’s newsletter and YouTube channel (from video one, and the “hey, it’s Joey!” days. IYKYK.). So I am very much not a biased reviewer. That said, I bought this book expecting a bit of pleasant fluff and not much else. I was very, very pleasantly surprised. This book is not the saccharine, overly defensive puff piece I was expecting by any means. It’s one of the better examinations of any fan community I’ve seen, with honest to god substance. I laughed, I got teary at some of the personal anecdotes that were shared, and I actually learned a lot, which I was not really expecting as someone who has literally watched the evolution of this fandom in real time online over the last 20 years and for whom much of what AJ discusses in the book was lived experience. I appreciated the sheer amount of research that clearly went into this book, and the easy, conversational style of AJ’s YouTube voiceovers translates very well to the written word. AJ does not shy away from tackling the negative sides of the fandom, either, which I was also very pleasantly surprised by. As a member of both communities I very much appreciated her platforming Black and lgbt folks in the book and including those perspectives and connecting the dots for folks. I did find it about comical to see her talking about the influencer space and how problematic it can be though, as one of the 800 lb gorillas in it; it’s a bit amusing to see her mention rules surrounding disclosures when DFB very clearly has a sponsorship by Kroger for their grocery delivery service that has to my knowledge never once been mentioned on the DFB channels or blog, despite the incessant mentions of the service and mysterious absence of instacart, Shipt or any of the more local Disney-centric delivery services since she started talking up Kroger. I also think more could have been said about the specific tightrope Disney has had to walk between pleasing the hardcore fans and the general public with regard to the parks. Still, this book is very much worth reading, even for people who are unfamiliar with the nuances of Disney fandom and just want an interesting breakdown of an often misunderstood subculture. As someone neck deep into it, I felt seen and validated, and challenged. It made me think, and that was something that I genuinely was not expecting. It’s a love letter to our community in the best possible way, yes celebrating what’s great about it but also acknowledging the flaws and in a way challenging us to do and be better by doing so. It’s just a really good book. ... show more

  • An incredibly pleasant read
Format: Hardcover
I loved this book. If you call yourself a Disney adult or fan, you will love this book. If you have a friend or relative who you would call a Disney adult, you will love this book. This group has received a lot of heat in the media. You will find in the book that these complaints are unfounded. The Disney dedication is really no different than the dedication many have for their sports teams. This book explains the Disney Adult trend in multiple ways. I found it very enjoyable. Every page warmed the soul. AJ explained this group in multiple ways. You will have personally experienced what she described or know someone who went through it. AJ tips Disney's hand in how to get such dedicated fans. Disney uses a lot of tools buried in things like movies and park rides to capture the fan. These tools or techniques are things like immersion, nostalgia, smells, and fantasy to capture the imagination. AJ documents the trend in a scientific way you won't see anywhere else. She then backs out and examines the trend from a macro level, too. AJ shows how Disney's actions on rides, movies, or plans clashed with the desires of these Disney Adults. The fans have their desires, and the company executives have theirs. AJ entertainingly documents these clashes. Her description makes the conflict look like a sports event. I describe myself as one of these Disney adults mentioned in the book. As a result, the book touched me in a way few other books do. If you are a Disney adult too, you will love the book too. AJ's descriptions of events brought up in my mind my past experiences, too. I haven't experienced anything like that before, where books describe my feelings in such detail. For example in the book's introduction describes one of her first visits with a roommate who had cancer. The trip seemed special due to the emotional aspect of the trip. My second experience with the park came from a similar trip to Disney World with my Mom, who had cancer. That emotional and nostalgic connection many have really makes a fierce connection few understand, unless you have gone through it. AJ gives that experience a voice. Thank you for doing that. ... show more

  • Not Worth Reading After Chapter Two
Format: Hardcover
This book is okay. As a long time Disney fan and Disney Adult I was expecting something that spoke to the overall population of Disney Adults more than this book does. The book's main problem is that most of it focuses on the social media and online world which I suppose to some degree is understandable given that is where the author spends a lot of time. However, for those of us who are not perpetually online and/or active in social media the book loses relevance after the first two chapters. My biggest objection to the book is the author's focus on the supposed hatred Disney Adults experience. I have been a Disney Adult since I became an adult in 1988 and I have never once experienced hatred because of it. Sure some people find me a little quirky and at work I was known as that guy everyone came to talk to before they went to Disney World but that is it. I honestly think the hatred the author talks about so much in her book and on her blog is something that is confined to the extreme and toxic environments of the internet and social media and if you can rip yourself away from that world then it really is not a thing. Like I said, the book is okay. I certainly saw myself in much of what the author was talking about but as someone who does not live in social media there was way too much focus on that aspect of Disney Adults after chapter two. In terms of the hatred Disney Adults experience, I think the author is going overboard talking about a problem that does not really exist outside of social media. ... show more

  • Diagnosed as a Disney Adult
Format: Hardcover
If you’re a Disney fan at heart, this book is pure magic! ✨ It’s the perfect blend of nostalgia, fun facts, and insider details that every Disney adult craves. From park history to hidden gems, it’s packed with delightful stories that make you feel like you’re walking down Main Street, USA, churro in hand. The writing is witty, engaging, and sprinkled with enough pixie dust to keep you hooked from start to finish. What I loved most is how it captures the true spirit of being a Disney adult—celebrating the joy, wonder, and unapologetic love of the parks and films, while also offering tips and perspectives that only fellow fans will truly appreciate. It’s both a celebration and a guide, and honestly, it made me want to book my next trip immediately. This isn’t just a book, it’s a love letter to Disney magic—for those of us who never outgrew it, and never will. 🌟 ... show more

  • This book is an honest gem
Format: Audiobook
This book was my travel buddy on my most recent Disney trip. I pre-ordered the physical book, and when Amazon offered me a free audible download, I snagged the audiobook too. During my park days, when I needed a break, I'd pop in my headphones and listen to AJ's voice for a little bit and ended up finishing the entire book in just a few days. I'm new to the label of Disney Adult, having always been a fan of Disney movies, but only been a fan of the parks since 2023, and this book is a gift. It is honest, balanced, and gives voice to several types of Disney Adults. One of the gifts of this book was space to wrestle with this new hobby--the good and the bad. For the last three years I've visited the parks multiple times, both with travel companions and solo. In Disney World I found time and space to grieve some really hard losses, prioritize fun during a stressful season, and find rejuvenation to go back to the day to day. Now that I feel like my life season is changing, I've been wrestling with what to do about Disney. Do I cut back, take a break, put it down for an indefinite amount of time? I'm not sure. This book provided a kind and gracious voice for wrestling with all of that while also reminding me why I fell in love with this in the first place. Thank you, AJ, for sharing your voice and perspective beyond the bounds of YouTube and website articles. This book is a gem and a gift and I've already recommended to a friend. ... show more

Format: Hardcover
I bought this book to support the author, who is a creator of a YouTube channel that I watch. While the book is not a page-turner, it provided interesting information that I didn't know and perspectives, of which I didn't think. This book was written by a social media influencer, and compares well to other books by influencers that I read. ... show more
