  • Can be a great shavette with a simple modification.
Color: Black
As others have stated, this is a very cheap (price) shavette that gets the job done. However, it can be made much better with minor modifications. Let's begin with how these things work: you get a razor that at first glance looks like a traditional straight razor. But when you unfold it you see that the business end is actually a holder for half of a DE (double edge) blade. To replace the blade you pull out an insert that holds the blade in the right place. It has little bumps molded into it that fit the hips of the half blade. Once you have the blade in place you slide the insert back into the receiver. The receiver is made out of a piece of sheet metal that has been folded into the shape of a tall triangle with a narrow bottom edge. The blade then protrudes where the two tall sides of the triangle come together. The problem is that the sheet metal is rather thick and has square edges. The blade only protrudes a little bit from the top of the triangle and that can make it difficult to get just the right blade angle against your skin. The thick edge of the receiver holds the blade up and away from your skin. But it's easy to fix. Get a flat file and file away the thick corner. Of course you would want to make sure you have the insert and blade removed while you file. It will only take a few minutes of work because these are made of a pretty soft metal. My close up pictures of the reciever show what mine looked up after a little filing to take down that corner. Once you get a nice bevel on the receiver part of the shaver this becomes a great shaving unit. If you have never used a shavette before: + You don't need to sharpen or strop. When you blade gets dull you throw it away. + I liked it for carry-on travel because you can get a pack of blades for 2-3 bucks at just about any Wally or big chain drug store. Then I can still have my straight edge shave on the road. However, there are also disadvantages: - DE blades are not really made to be used in shavettes and as such they have square edges that are irritating and can cut you if you're not careful. If you really don't like the square edges I recommend a Personna style hair dresser's shaper. They are quite easy to shave with and have longer blades, but the blades are a little more expensive and difficult to find. - Disposable blades can be TOO sharp for a novice shaver. Especially when they are new it's easy to cut your face to ribbons. As an aside, I bought this one after a similar product was confiscated by TSA. They said that since it could hold a blade it was still not acceptable as a carry-on even if there was no blade in it. But, at this price I was prepared to replace it as many times as necessary. I traded just under four Washingtons to get mine. Note that I traveled with the first one for over a year before a TSA agent decided he didn't like it. If you travel carry-on only and want a straight edge shave I would say this is by far the best way to go. ... show more

  • A JUNK PRODUCT
Color: White
Anyhow mine came quickly in the mail and was securely wrapped and that is the good part. I Also ordered both a pack of Shark and Derby blades to go with it as I wanted to see which blade gave the better shave. Now the Razor ,Or rather the blade holder seems to be fairly tight and secure as I looked it over carefully before shaving but when I tried to actually put a blade in then things quickly got interesting very fast..... Firstly the silver insert that actually holds the blade does come out quite readily but the BAD part is the little guides and bars on the blade holder just will not line up or hold a blade securely. OK fine so I opened my pack of Derby blades figuring a different made blade from a different manufacture would line up and at least hold the blade secure. WRONG.......... It didn't hold derby blades very well either so I took a full size Lord razor blade and broke it in two and finally most of the internal bars on the blade holder finally lined up. So I then and only then lathered up to shave. The first pass went pretty smooth and I even shaved several problem areas tho I wasn't really impressed with the quality of the shave tho it was good ,Yet it still was no closer than could be done with a regular Safety Razor. On the second pass even being careful I felt a tug and I wound up with a rather 'Nasty Cut' tho luckily no scarring but the cut will take a few days to heal up. Anyway's after disinfecting the cut I taped it up and then examined the Razor real close?. I could see where the blade had -SLIPPED- and tipped out on one end so what had happened was that the blade had hit something and one end popped out and cut me. So after that I broke the Diane holder so nobody could find it or try to use it again and tossed it into the trash. Frankly after my experience I will NEVER AGAIN ever in this lifetime use a blade holder made by any maker what so ever as the risks are just Too High!..... Personally since the Blades cannot be firmly secured I regard the Diane as unsafe and I strongly advise you AGAINST using it. An earlier reviewer also warned that you WILL get cut with this item and believe me: "He's Right!".. So Avoid This Item By All Means As It Is DANGEROUS!..... Nuff Said. Indiana ED. ... show more

  • The best value for a shavette on Amazon I’ve seen
Color: White
This is your typical shavette style razor that a lot of barbers use to finish a haircut. It’s a good value for what it is and works great for that purpose. It does feel a little cheap compared to other styles of shavettes but it gets the job done. For the price this is the best value that I have seen on Amazon for a razor with this design. I use this razor to shave like a straight razor and it’s very light and easy to use with little to no pressure. If you don’t load a blade, you can use even use this for practice to figure out how to hold the razor and follow your facial hair growth patterns. Definitely helps before trying a straight razor for fewer nicks and cuts! ... show more

  • Really good beginners straight razor at a price that is tough ...
Color: White
Really good beginners straight razor at a price that is tough to pass up if you're considering how to learn this method of shaving. Obviously there are much better units out there, but I wanted something that I wouldn't care about throwing away if I decided it wasn't for me. This fit the ticket perfectly and I'm glad I purchased it. Not knowing what I was doing, I bought the traditional shave soap and brush, but soon found out that I really disliked that method of shave lubrication because it would dry out on my face before I could shave all the way. I even tried small patches at a time and didn't have much better luck. I stumbled on "Shave Secret" in a big box store in the shaving isle and decided to give it a try and it's many times better than with shave soap. I hardly ever get nicks anymore and I can actually see the razor on the skin which helps a lot. ... show more
