Description

In November 2020, Depeche Mode were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and Dave Gahan, accepting the honour, said: “I’d like to thank Anton Corbijn who thank God came in at the right time and actually made us look cool.” Also in the fall of 2020, TASCHEN released the limited edition Depeche Mode by Anton Corbijn (81–18) signed by Depeche Mode and Anton Corbijn, and it became one of the fastest selling collector’s editions in the publishing company’s history. This equally epic, but more wallet friendly XL edition, is a testament to Corbijn’s unique vision, and indeed “cool” as Gahan acknowledged so movingly in his speech; a detailed illustrated history of how Corbijn, who became in 1986 the band’s de facto creative director, and helped cement Depeche Mode’s reputation as the biggest cult band in the world. Featuring over 500 photographs from Corbijn’s extensive archives, some never seen before, including formal and informal portraits from places such as Madrid, Hamburg, the California desert, Prague and Marrakech (some taken during the making of iconic videos such as “Enjoy the Silence” and “Personal Jesus”); a multitude of off-the-cuff, candid images; and stunning live shots from all their tours since 1988. In addition to the photographs, there are sketches and designs for stage sets and album covers, Corbijn’s handwritten captions throughout the book, placing the reader right in the middle of the shoots, and an extended interview with the Dutch master. Created with the full collaboration of the band, who share some insights on working with Corbijn, Depeche Mode by Anton Corbijn (81–18) trumpets how one man’s original aesthetic, that has encompassed all of their photography, most of their music videos, album graphics and set designs, helped shape the band’s enduring popularity. Reflecting on his role in Depeche, Corbijn recalls in the book’s introduction: “A lot of it came down to me, and I wanted it to be right for them. I wanted to think for them. To be great for them.” This book is a tribute to the depth and breadth of that greatness, a celebration of one of the most creative and enduring collaborations in rock history. Read more

  • Absolute must-have for hardcore DM fans
If you are a hardcore Depeche Mode fan, you NEED this book. The price tag might seem a bit steep for a book, but believe me what you get is worth it. It's massively heavy (truly a "coffee table book" if there ever was one, too heavy to comfortably hold in one's hands for browsing), huge, thick high quality paper with a satiny finish--not too flat, not too shiny. The photos are incredible and many have insightful notes or little stories by Corbijn that give them so much dimension and life. From Depeche Mode's humble beginnings to where they are now the book is a real journey and there's so much value to be had here, so many never before seen pictures and some you may have seen before, but you can now see in a whole new light. You owe it to yourself to get this book. It's an essential buy for the hardcore DM fan, you won't regret it. Don't let the price tag scare you, it's worth every penny. ... show more

  • Truly worth the cost if you’re a devotee!
This is a big, beautiful high-quality coffee table book with fantastic photos and hand written narratives by Corbijn. As a lifelong fan of the band who has a pretty extensive knowledge, I was pleasantly surprised by some of the stories and anecdotes-things I had never heard! The quality of the book itself is remarkable, it’s incredibly large, hefty and high gloss. I’m not one for a haughty coffee table book traditionally, but Taschen yes I must have when it comes to that collector item. Completely satisfied that I purchased this! ... show more

  • Depeche Mode AC DM 81-18 Book
Great Book for all Depeche Mode fans.It has some early pictures od Depeche and than some pictures from 1987 till 2018.My problem is there is only one picture from 1986,but i assume Anton didn't have too many photo sessions with Depeche Mode at that time.I do recommend this book for everyone who likes Depeche Mode and Anton Corbijn photography, yes it is pricey but comparing to first edition it is worth to buy. In case you wonder yes there aren't any pictures from 82-85 period but the reason is that Anton wasn't Depeche Mode photographer at that time and technically it is Anton's Corbijn book.👍🤩 ... show more
