  • Recommended above pioneer equivalents

this controller is great. I only have two complaints: 1. The FX setup is so overly complicated that I barely use it. Can we just have 4x wetness dials for 4 dkfferent effects instead? 2. It would be really helpful to have a "tension" adjustment for scratching. I'd love to turn the tension up so I dont keep accidentally back-spinning when I meant to just start the track on release. Or alternatively a button which turns on a modewhere the track plays immediately when your hand is removed from capacitive touch would be helpful. As in play normally even if the jog wheel is still spinning. Stems is awesome and even though there are no onboard stems, I'm perfectly happy with preparing my track stems ahead of time in enginedj. ... show more

  • The world's BEST DJ controller Bar none!
Style: Prime 4+
Such a beast! The controls lights, switches and everything are beautiful. Will update when I get to actually use it for a good bit. Wished it had that "tick" on the pitch/blend telling you where the center is. You really have to look down instead.

  • Beware! Stems and only standalone or pc:
Style: Prime 4+
The best of best. 9.5 only for two reasons to keep in mind: stems are only pre analized on pc, and you can only use it either standalone or as controller.

  • Great controller, but does have some flaws.
Style: Prime 4+
I've been DJing with this unit now for almost 6 months, and I have learned several things about this that I love and some that I hate. I will first say, I would recommend this unit. However, let's start with the bad: 1. The Engine software used for Denon DJ sucks. It is not intuitive, and I would definitely watch several tutorials to understand it. The nice thing is that it does read Rekordbox playlists and it will convert Serato playlists to Engine format. 2. The layout is not the most efficient. Compared to its Pioneer competitors, the layout is something to be desired. You lack the traditional effects near the faders, and they are located on either side of the main screen. You also need to use the touch screen to select an effect you want then turn on the effect manually with a button. Having everything more central would have been a step up for this unit. 3. Hot Cues - Folks, just do your hot cues in Rekordbox and export the playlist. Engine will not save your hot cues and memory cues without exporting them from the controller directly to your computer. Trying to set them up in Engine is very tricky... However, re-exporting a playlist back from your machine can overwrite those cues even with Rekordbox files, which is incredibly frustrating. Just save yourself the time, and do the cues in Rekordbox so you do not lose them. 4. The faders really only leave you with four effects for transitioning your tracks: wash, echo, filter, and slip. The competitors have several. 5. Fader knobs are still plasticy. They do feel a little cheap especially given the attention to construction detail for the units other components. 6. The platters are smaller, which may not be great for scratching. NOW, the good. 1. The unit has streaming! You have Apple Music, Amazon Music, TIDAL, Spotify, and Beatport. This really changes the game for accessing music. However, you cannot record your mixes directly from the controller while streaming, as it has a feature that disables the recording feature. 2. Has the ability to input your own solid state drive to save your files directly to the unit. THis feature is great, but complicated. Manually formatting your drive to EXFAT32 requires knowledge of your computer, and if not used correctly, you cannot stream the songs directly from the drive... I am still trying to figure out how to get my drive to work!! 3. The construction is mostly metal, while several competitors rely heavily on plastics. The durability is great, but it does add some weight. However, it looks clean and definitely more professional. 4. The screen is adjustable. While the screen housing adjusts, it also allows you to control brightness. The screen also tilts and has a removable protective cover for transport. I would be careful though because the tilt can hyperextend and break. Metal housing would have been better. 5. Stems feature is pretty neat. It definitely makes your ability to mix mashups and remixes much better. Sometime the stem separation isn't always perfect, but it is a neat feature that few competitors have. 6. It has the ability to control your lighting setups! I would still recommend a DMX controller for larger setups, but for smaller gigs, this is perfect. 7. Several XLR, RCA, and 1/4 ports 8. Ability to change the decorative lighting colors. 9. You can save hot cues and loop cues without having to compromise the beat pads space! 10. Denon constantly patches updates for features and firmware. Pioneer has been terrible about this and puts it on the consumer to buy more updated controllers and will quit patching updates after a few years. Denon has a great reputation keeping their products lasting longer. 11. The unit has 4 channels with its two decks, and swapping is very easy. If you like planning 3-4 songs at once, this unit can do it! 12. Beat grid editing can be done on the fly on the controller, and it is super easy compared to Pioneer products. With that being said, the track analysis feature of Engine isn't perfect, but the grid edit feature helps this. Overall, I'd recommend this to someone who is tired of the norm. The Denon Prime 4+ is a unit packed with feature at a great price point for competitive units with less features at the same price. I personally have been loyal to Pioneer over the years, but I do like this controller and keep my smaller Pioneer controller for travel and smaller gigs. If you are considering this, you wont regret it once you learn it. However, other good units in this price range include the Pioneer RX3 and XDJ-AZ. ... show more
