  • Favorite piece of kit in a long time
Before I begin let me say that I have been using Pioneer Pro equipment including their flagship lineup in my studio and in the professional environment as well as the xdj-rx and rx2 for the last five years. I have also been DJing for the last 16 years since vinyl was prevalent. I have used and owned a few Denon kits in the past, but until recently had not given them another chance only because Pioneer is the most common piece of kit you will find in a professional environment. I think that needs to change, because of the entire Prime series. This controller is an amazing value with the leading edge tech and a standalone device. As far as I'm concerned there's no better bang for your buck or any other piece of equipment I would rather own than the Prime 4. With that said on with the review. There is almost nothing I do not like about this player. If I had to make my dream player then all I would add honestly is 9in platters as they had back in the 3900 series that were motorized. for those very rare occasions such as weddings, I would also make the zone output have an auto mix function that sounds more than just a typical iPod and sounds as if someone could actually be blending the tracks together. Lastly, I really miss having a FX selector knob that has stops/detents. If I know I use reverb and echo the most I can just reach down and move the knob to the next detent rather than have to watch the screen to see when the desired FX are finally selected. Other than these points which are purely me thinking up what my dream equipment would look like, there is nothing else I can think of off the top of my head that I would change about this setup. given that the closest piece of equipment out there to this is the pioneer xdj rx2, and having owned that as well I can say that for the exact same price and often much cheaper given Denons frequent sales, you get much more for your dollar. Let me list just a few of my favorite things that this includes that I have not found on the Pioneer nor just about any other piece of stand-alone hardware. -2 fx units - more comprehensive list of FX -adjustable FX parameters such as frequency - ability to sync with software such as Resolume and SoundSwitch to make a tightly integrated show with lighting and visuals. -2 mics with EQ and dedicated echos -customizable displays within the jogwheels -4 deck support -tons of connection options including 4 USB ports, SD slot and a bay to install a SSD. -split cue for headphones -oversized plastic cue/play buttons -very usable "beat jump" buttons -"pitch bend" buttons -dedicated beatgrid adjust buttons -quick swappable crossfader. (I had to completely dismantle and swap the crossfader TWICE in my RX controllers. Easily a hour+ job) -key sync control -LED for zero pitch position -zone output -XLR booth output -create playlists on the fly from the unit. -can read songs/crates/metadata from other DJ softwares -integrated WIFI card - DJ streaming services like Tidal -very bright LED screen - tiltable LED screen -multitouch LED screen -pressure sensitive platter vs touch sensitive (stop accidental brushing against platter where it stops the record) -more dynamic looping functions -super customizable, everything from talkover attenuation levels and defining your EQ frequency crossover points to adding custom logos to the decks and determining hot cue behavior. -create a tag list of tracks to play later from the unit itself or the Engine software and take your USB with USB with you to perform another time. Pioneer only has momentary playlists that are lost when you disconnect the card or power cycle the players requiring you to make playlists. - You can truly personalize this way beyond the Pioneer flagship equipment or XDJ series. I know I have left out lots of other possible benefits and additions this player has over Pioneer, but it has left a huge gap of R&D for the industry standard Pioneer along with other manufacturers to play catch-up with. Definitely don't hesitate on this one if you have the budget ... show more

  • Professional, convenient, amazing
Finally bought my prime 4 and couldn't be happier; this unit not only has liberated me from the laptop but also has conveniently allowed me to keep the versatility of carrying my digital library, while staying and looking professional at all times. Denon has simply made the best Dj console to date. Whether you're a pro, amateur, or studio Dj, this Prime 4 console offers all the tools needed to create your own mixes, and deliver every set with your own unique style. In addition; you can still control Serato Dj if you prefer to keep the unit tied to your laptop, or you can stream your music from Tidal if you'd like to go completely wireless. Now, this is just a personal opinion based on my own experiences as a mobile and club dj. The Prime 4 does not feel heavy to me; I know it's heavy if you compare it to any other controller made out of plastic, however I think its weight is perfectly manageable if you work on the go. Besides, despite being as big and sturdy, this unit isn't nearly as heavy as many of the other professional decks in the market at the moment; plus this still is a professional good looking piece of hardware. I actually think my Prime 4 is lightweight when I think of my older Dj set ups from the late 90's and 2000's. This machine is the future, period. Denon freed us from the laptop, allowed us to carry all our music everywhere, and delivered a professional experience that suits the needs of contemporary and old school Dj's alike. Don't even think twice if you're on the market for a pro-grade mixing set up, The Prime 4 is all you need and a great value for your hard earned money. ... show more

  • Denon sets the bar for the next generation of controllers
This is an incredible machine that will simplify club gigs, mobile gigs, and practicing at home. The build quality feels more solid than my Pioneer DDJ controllers, and the platters and faders all have a much more tactile feel that really helps when making micro adjustments. Sound quality is better than anything else I've used, even when doing extreme tempo or pitch changes. The effects and controls sound great and are simple to use -- the four extra displays with the effects controls are a game changer. Also, the ability to color-map each deck and associated buttons makes it wicked easy to understand exactly what's going on and what you're about to do. I'm switching from using Serato DJ Pro, and I don't yet find the display layout to be easy to understand at a glance while in the middle of a set (but I'm sure it will become easier with use). Not to say that it's hard to use... I was able to jump right in without reading anything. Most of the information you need is there, it just doesn't all jump out as well as it does in Serato. The display itself is beautiful and smooth, and navigating things is fairly intuitive. Browsing a large collection may be challenging, and so I hope they consider writing a companion app or display support to decouple the library/load functions from the DJ functions. :) It's absolutely worthwhile to go and and get a 1TB SSD to put into the unit! If you're using windows you'll need to initialize the disk using Disk Manager (MBR, not GPT!) before you'll be able to format it (as exFAT, not NTFS!) and use it. The user interface on Engine Prime (the PC software used to prep/manage your library) is pretty unintuitive, but the software itself is pretty fast at analyzing tracks and so far does a reasonably good job. If you have a super nested folder structure (like one might find his remix collection organized) then it will be pretty difficult to import (as you have to import one folder at a time). All in all, this is a godsend for anyone who does club or mobile gigs. Go ahead and get it, you won't be disappointed. ... show more
