  • Good start
I'm not usually a fan of episodic books, but as an audiobook this worked really well for me. Usually it takes me months to listen to an entire audiobook and this only took a week! TW: child abuse Human Elle lives with her fairy Strother and stepsisters. Maybe "survives" is a better term; humans are usually slaves and Elle is no different. However, she has a special gift that she hopes will be what helps her buy a wish...and her freedom. ... show more

  • Fav ,vampire oh my
A human Elle has been made a slave by her stepmother. She is trying to win her freedom by selling her gift that makes you lose the memories you want to forget. Now vampires want her and doesn't know why. Can't wait to read the next book. Elle is more then a human just can't wait to find out what.

  • Intriguing introduction to a paranormal Cinderella retelling in an urban fantasy setting
This is episode 1 of 6 in the City of Wishes serial, a paranormal Cinderella retelling in an urban fantasy setting. I love fairy tale retellings and PNR/urban fantasy, so I was excited to check this out. There’s a lot going on here, and I find the characters and the plot intriguing, but the serial format can be a bit frustrating. This episode introduces the characters and a few different plot threads, but you’ll have to read the entire serial to enjoy the complete story. As in so many Cinderella retellings, I found the stepmother and the bitchy stepsister a little over the top, but otherwise, I like what Rachel Morgan is doing with the Cinderella story. I’m curious to learn about Elle’s mother and why Elle has her unique power. I want to learn more about this world with its magic and wishes and conflicts between the fae, vampires, shifters, and humans. This is a tantalizing start if you enjoy urban fantasy and fairy tale retellings and don’t mind the cliffhanger aspect of the serial format. Fortunately, if you think you might enjoy the story but you don’t like cliffhangers, all of the episodes have been compiled in City of Wishes: The Complete Cinderella Story. The audiobook narration was provided by Arielle DeLisle. Her performance was well paced and easy to understand, and I enjoyed the character voices. I think the narration adds a lot of enjoyment to this story, so I definitely recommend the audiobook. I already own the Kindle version of this story, but I was given a free copy of this audiobook by the author and volunteered to provide an honest review. ... show more

  • A unique retelling!
The Memory Thief is a Cinderella retelling set in a paranormal urban fantasy world with fae, vampires, shapeshifters, and humans. (Fae are the superior race, and humans are looked down on for not having any magical ability.) The story follows a human girl named Elle. Elle is bound to her stepmother by a slave charm— she can’t earn her freedom, but she can wish for it. There are three levels of Wishes, and they can be bought with Essence (fae magic stuff), or by making a deal with the Godmother. This is a little cliché, but I got over it quickly… Elle appears to be the only human with magic. She has the ability to erase people’s memories. One night, Elle (literally) runs into a fae named Dex at a club while meeting a client (she sneaks out of her house at night to erase memories in exchange for Essence so her and her step sister can run away), and he saves her life from a vampire who has been stalking her. Vampires are kidnapping human girls… but the vampires specifically want Elle because of whoever her mother was. The narrative switches between Elle and Dex, which I enjoyed… But the book suddenly ends when things were getting good! Rachel Morgan is releasing this series in “episodes”, so it’s not really a full novel. I’m dying for the next installment, because I hate cliffhangers! I don’t know why, but this book gave me Bright vibes (Netflix movie with Will Smith). Anyways, be sure to check this book out! *I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. ... show more

  • Engaging Story
I think Rachel Morgan got it going on and I truly do love the narrator Arielle DeLisle. What I like most about the story is you are truly in alternative world, supernatural world. There are Fairies aka Faes, Vampires aka Vamps, shifters but unfortunately, the humans are in the bottom of the society chain. They are slaves to the magical creatures and this is the story of Elle (aka Trixie) and how to find a way to be. free. I do not like how the book is too short but I am a fan of Rachel Morgan and so, I got all the books anyways. I do love all her characters and it’s quiet well developed and independently amazing. Please, note even if it’s a re-tell of Cinderella story, it was nice to have a familiar story and allowing to provide a beautiful twist on it. To expand the possibilities and to lead to a great adventure. I bought all the books, 6 books total and it is 467 pages long but it will be so worth it when you are a fan of PARANOMRAL FANTASY. ... show more

  • A Thrilling and Unique take on Cinderella!
This was such an amazing twist on the classic Cinderella. Seriously, my only complaint is that it wasn't nearly long enough for me. The fact that there's fae (bounty hunters as well!), vampires, shifters, and humans, and a long con...honestly, there's so much to love about this book. I love this fresh twist on an old favorite fairytale, that Elle (the MC) is smart, sassy, and determined, but also fearful of and angry with a certain villian. I also love how this world Rachel Morgan has built is both modern and archaic and is then centered around Fae and Vampires (the main focus for this first episode), and the humans who struggle daily for just their freedom. I also like how, unlike most Cinderella retellings, this one is a bit grittier in some aspects. And by that, I mean, it does focus a bit more on the abuse that Elle endures, much of which is the driving force of Elle's determination to be free. Those scenes aren't long, nor are they drawn out, it's more for the reader to understand Elle's situation and why she's so dead set on obtaining a Wish. I'm whole-heartedly and not so patiently waiting for book 2 because Elle is everything you didn't realize you wanted in a Cinderella. ... show more
