  • Great as a second or third kit or for someone looking to get smd experience.
After reading the mixed reviews I went ahead and bought this anyway because of the surface mount ic. Overall this is a great little kit and took me about an hour to solder up. The reviews complaining about a lack of instructions are somewhat correct. There isn’t a sheet of paper with step by step instructions but silk screened on the back are the values of the various components and where they go and the front silk screen has labels for every location. Between the silk screen and the photo in the product description with the same component location this was a breeze. I would suggest having some soldering experience as the surface mount ic is a bit of a challenge compared to the through hole components, but not too terrible if you watch a couple YouTube videos on smd components. This was my first go at smd components and it didn’t take more than 15 min or so to get it soldered on. ... show more

  • A good DIY kit overall.
I actually liked it as a challenge for myself: The Pros: A challenge to assemble [especially the computer chip/ op-amp or whatever its called] as the chip is very tricky to solder and can be easily cross wired and you will be out of luck if you can not correct the problem. A little static on the line once operating; but very good reception considering the low cost of this device. The Cons: Considering how close some of the solder points are, you can easily over solder and cross wire components on the device [see pros #1] The picture is deceptive as the battery pack [AA size] is nearly the size of the unit. (but i dont have a problem with it if you do not) I had to reference the picture on amazon as some of the ceramic capacitors i did not know where to place [it did not some with instructions and the circuit diagram on amazon may not exactly match up all the points exactly]. Overall a good product for the price, and the challenge to assemble it. ... show more

  • Take it with however many grains of salt you wish
I am only a hobbyist who has only soldered one successful project (the APC), but this is a very tough kit to solder, unless you have a means to replace soldering the regular way with some kind of more precise tool. However, at my skill level, I knew from the beginning that this would be more of a practice chip, but no, I never got it to work, so if you are truly beginner level, try to find a kit where things on the chip are not so close together. Many builders will love the ability to put a chip this small in a build, but this is not beginner level unless you have some type of special means for soldering this precisely. ... show more

  • No Instructions or diagrams included! Small SMD IC!
Like others have stated there's no diagrams, schematic or instructions included with this kit. The description does state that these are included. The component values are not on the PCB so you must use the schematic the is shown in the images, which is very small and low resolution, this makes it hard to deal with. If you have past building experience and can read the poor schematic you can figure out where things should go, it's a trick though. I have yet to assemble the kit but be warned that if you decide to buy this kit even without the diagrams/instructions you may have trouble as the included IC is a very small surface mount device also the other through-hole parts are very small. You will want to have a magnifier, soldering iron with a small chisel tip, fine diameter solder, tweezers as well as fluxed de-solder braid and a flux pen also using a tiny drop of super glue to fix the IC helps. If you try to solder the IC without the latter you will have a bad time. Do a web search for " hand soldering SMD " Note: I have now assembled the kit, I noticed (Unless I'm reading the schematic wrong) that C3 ( Top left of IC) is stated as 22nF this was substituted with a 100nF capacitor, the circuit seems to work fine with it. ... show more

  • Two Stars
No instructions and the wiring diagram picture is blurry but it works well

  • No Diagram or instructions
No wiring diagram with the product and the picture of the wiring diagram is too low quality to use. I don't mind not getting instructions but would have at least gotten a wiring diagram. If I get one from the seller I will edit my feedback.

  • I see that a number of people are having problems ...
I see that a number of people are having problems with lack of information to build. This radio kit is based on the HEX3653 FM Radio Chip. If you do a search on the web for this chip you will get a lot of information from DIY people who have documented schematics (drawings) and instructions that will help you with the purchase of this kit. ... show more
