  • Curtains is hauntingly beautiful
This is a really relaxing, beautiful album. I didn't like it when I first heard it, but the uniquely folksy sound, the poignant lead guitars, and the dark, depressing lyrics somehow fuse together to produce a strangely honest album, both emotional and uplifting in its way. There's not much here in terms of lyrical content that could remotely be considered uplifting. It's as if the original melodies, and the unrestrained passion of John's playing somehow transforms lines like "There is no more hope, there are no dreams" and "I'm a working man; I don't understand why clock-out comes so slow, every time" into something that's gorgeous and uplifting. It's magical, alchemical, haunting, original, and unique. This album is even less like the Red Hot Chili Peppers than most of his other solo work. The only thing it shares with the Chili Peppers that the soulful, intense, trademark sound of his vintage lead guitars. So, with more than ten solo albums, John has only ever released one music video from his solo work, and it's for the first track on this album, "The Past Recedes." I recommend you check it out on YouTube before buying this -- and if you don't like it after three listens, then stay away from Curtains. Instead, I'd recommend the polished mainstream-rock album Shadows Collide With People. But if you're feeling courageous, and if you think you have the stomach for dark, depressing lyrics paired with folksy upright bass, then this might just be one of the best albums you'll ever listen to. ... show more

  • Curtains is a must have for lovers of great music
John Frusciante is an amazing artist. I have always loved his work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers but this shows a completely different side. His songwriting is soulful and the arrangements are mind blowing. His voice is a breath of fresh air with all of the nonsense that has been going on for years in the music scene. His voice has a distinctive mellow tone that has not been auto tuned or fixed up in any other manner. It's a strong as it ever was doing backups in RHCP. That's an impressive feat for a guitarist of his stature. Sometimes it is either a good guitarist or a good singer. John is a great musician with a great voice. While this recording is a few years old it is a must for fans of plain old fashioned great music. The Past Recedes is a strong opener and the one that grabbed my attention - it keeps getting better from there... Very impressive. ... show more

  • no words
You wonder how does a single man do so much with only himself and his acoustic guitar? (for the most part) Well he is not any man, he is John frusciante! A man who has been through hell and back, and back again, one of the geniuses behind RHCP and an incredible person. This album, I didn't have the highest hopes for, but it has proved me wrong in so many ways, their is no way to describe the way he builds an entire incredible album on such simplisity. the melodies are so good, with backwards solos thrown in to boot. Every single song is fantastic! Hey, you with the soul! you'll like this album! ... show more

  • lost in 'Anne'
If I didn't have a family and didn't have to work or eat or bathe or sleep, I would just listen to 'Anne' over and over again. I never tire of it. I listen to other music but then I miss his humming here, like another reviewer said, as if he is next to you singing in your ear. Which is my greatest fantasy. (that, and actually being able to create amazing music like this) The other songs -- like 'Ascension' and 'The Past Recedes' -- are fantastic too, but 'Anne', that one haunts me in my sleep. The guitar solo, that's the cry of any tormented heart. The lyrics are poetry, allegory, honesty. It's July 2011, you've been keeping quiet, and I miss you, John Frusciante. ... show more

  • Curtains Review
There are 3 great songs on here and the rest is ho hum. John Fruscianti seems like he first writes lyrics (which are great), then attaches a vocal melody, then follows the vocal melody with guitar notes that match the vocal. The few songs that break out of this furmula are great though.
