  • A fun game that is kid friendly
Platform For Display: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
This review is for the Switch version. What a fun game! I've tried the Adventure, Arcade and Online modes and all work great without exception. As soon as the game was delivered my 8 year old daughter was giddy about putting the game in and racing pops 1 on 1. She has played the Crash Trilogy on Switch and knows the Crash games aren't as easy as some of the Mario games including Mario Kart with "kid mode" enabled. I told her CTR would not have a kid mode and to plan to get used to the joystick control for steering. We played arcade mode out of the box to get right into the action. Several characters were available to choose from along with a long list of colorful and fun levels. In "easy" mode she did struggle some, placing 7th or 8th in the races. But she had a smile on her race the entire time! Easy mode is a bit faster than 50cc Mario Kart, and the other modes leave tons of room to challenge the most seasoned racers. Arcade mode in split screen (2 player) looks great on the Switch, with no noticeable drop in framerate or graphic detail. However, when we added a 3rd person the screen split to four boxes and things became heavily pixelated and there seemed to be a drop in the framerate. This was in dock mode, connected to a LG OLED with the settings where they need to be. The Switch definitely was the weak link in the 3-4 player action. I suspect my Xbox One X or PS4 Pro would handle that without issue as it isn't exactly Witcher 3 details. Online mode worked fine, finding 5 players to connect with, and launching with relatively minimal wait times. Yes, there are load screens in the Switch version, sometimes upwards of 30 seconds. These wait times were present in online, arcade and Adventure modes. Online mode exposed I have a long way to go in mastering this game as playing in "easy" against my 8 year old wasn't much of a challenge. Meanwhile, a 10 year old in Wisconsin drove circles around me in Online mode. You will notice there are tons of characters, carts and aesthetic features that can be unlocked. I found the quickest way to do that is by playing the Adventure mode. Each time you complete a race in Adventure mode you are rewarded with a new unlocked feature. Easy mode was easy, but again appropriate for a kid, or someone who wants to quickly unlock stuff. All in all an excellent game. My 8 year old asked to race as soon as she woke up today, so clearly it is a hit for old and young racers alike. A bit of a learning curve for those who haven't played Mario Kart and also a bit faster, but that's part of why I love Crash games. They give you a challenge while also leaving you satisfed (even if you get 8th place). Suggestions for developers: reduce loading times on Switch version, enable gyroscope controls similar to Mario Kart, and consider a "kid mode" . I would not hesitate to order this game, especislly if you have kids or friends to race online. ... show more

  • Masterful Remake of a timeless classic
Platform For Display: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled is a remaster of the original Crash Team Racing (Sept. 1999) and Crash Nitro Kart (Nov. 2003). CTR allows you to choose between two modes from the main menu: Nitro Fueled and Classic. The former represents a new spin on progression that is geared more towards modern players, with a full suite of customization options as well as character and cart changes that can be done between races(unlike the original). The latter is a mirrored experience from what we have played back on the PlayStation, where you only get to play as a single character from beginning to end, even though you still get all the rewards along the way. The game is packed with content, boasting 25 different characters, 31 tracks and a ton of collectability (relics, trophies, tokens and keys). If you happen to be like me, and you had a hard time really connecting with Mario Kart alternatives like the recent ‘Team Sonic Racing’, this game might change your mind, since it plays more like Mario Kart and has some cool features that set it apart from the rest. Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled has some new features in this remaster, outside of the already gorgeous graphics that allow this entry to remain faithful to the original release. The game has three main components that weren’t present in the original: online play, kart customizations (akin to Mario Kart 8) and limited-time Grand Prix events. The Grand Prix events are pretty cool because they act as a long-term, post-game incentive to keep playing after completion. These Grand Prix events will provide free updates that occasionally give us some new tracks, events and challenges. Upon completion of these temporary challenges on these new tracks, you will earn ‘Nitro Points’, which will act as in-game currency to unlock new characters, karts and other various goodies. This game is definitely jam-packed with content, and acts as a masterful nostalgia trip that reminds us that even old games can be remade into something fresh and exciting. Whether you have played the original or not, this is a fantastic kart racer that is totally worth picking up. ... show more

  • Nostalgic throwback to my adolescence
Platform For Display: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
My brother and I played this game on our PS1 until it was ruined when we were teenagers. We loved the gameplay, the weapons, and the tracks, especially Sewer Speedway and N. Gin Labs. The game was more challenging and fun to play than Mario Kart, which is a lot more tame and aimed at the younger crowd. CTR was for the teenagers. The game seems to be remastered very faithfully to the original, but with much improved graphics, obviously. Plus you get all the tracks from CTR Nitro Cart along with it, although I never played that game. The tracks from the first CTR are just as I remember, though. The game is maybe a little more challenging than I remember but then again it's been 20 years since I played this regularly so muscle memory is probably playing a big role in my lack of performance. It's starting to come back though. I'm slowly remembering all the little nuances, tips, and shortcuts of the game. Only real gripe I have is the load times, which are a bit lengthy, upwards of 45 seconds at times. Also, unlike Mario Kart, cart customizations are strictly for aesthetics. Changing out the wheels or cart body does nothing for it's performance. You set what you want your cart to run like separately. You can choose to make it favor speed, acceleration, turning, or have it balanced. I guess that makes it a little easier. Other than that, it's been great nostalgic fun playing these tracks again. I've regained a little piece of my adolescence. If they remaster the Donkey Kong Country games next, I would be in Nintendo heaven. ... show more
