  • Great Craftsman Mechanic's Tool Set, Polished Chrome Set, case works but could be better Great Craftsman Mechanic's Tool Set, Polished Chrome Set, case works but could be better
I've been a long time user and fan of Craftsman mechanic's tools from childhood well into my adult life. I like their durability, dependability and lifetime warranty! Over the years I've used many various different sets, both craftsman and their competitors. So far the tools in this set are living up to my expectation! I like the newer handle design on the ratchets, they are a pleasure to use without being too bulky. The chrome plating on these tools is excellent too! They even include polished chrome wrenches in the top, and some socket bits including torx and hex bits which are a little more rare for these types of sets. They include a couple of spark plug sockets, and a screwdriver with a multitude of bits, sockets galore, deep and shallow (metric and SAE), 12 point and 6 point, two full sets of allen wrenches (metric and SAW), a bunch of extension bars, etc. I'm very pleased with all of it! The case, however, is far from perfect. The side tabs that hold the drawers in are far too difficult to open, I almost had to use a pry bar to make it happen (those will need filing down). The top drawer opens smoothly, unobstructed, but the two bottom drawers stick to each other when opening, so you always have to hold the other one back to open the drawer. I do like that the drawers are removable and double as tool storage trays. I like that I can remove a drawer of the sizes I need and move just it to my work area, instead of carrying the whole set. The top of the kit now has 4 latches (2 in front and 2 on the side), instead of just the two on the front like they used to do. Sure this helps the top cope with the weight of the case, but when you close the top, the side latches prevent it from closing fully, so you constantly have to fiddle with flipping those up and out of the way to close the thing, instead of just one fluid motion. Also, some of the tools clip into their locations, and way too tightly at that, especially true for the wrenches, these clips will need to be filed too. But, I will say the case is rugged and durable, and plenty strong enough to hold the heft of this set. I like that there is some extra depth and voids in the trays and more-so in the top which allows room to store some adapters and extra extensions and other like items. My review is about the tools in the this set. The tools get a full 5 stars, if I were reviewing the case as a standalone item, it would only get 3 stars. I hope my review has been helpful in helping you determine if this Craftsman mechanic's tool set is right for you! ... show more

  • Good starter set
This is a fairly complete mechanics set, consisting mostly of sockets and wrenches meant for bolts and nuts. It includes a very wide range of sizes in both metric and imperial, and includes 12 point sockets, 6 point sockets, and deep sockets. It has both 1/2" and 3/8" socket wrenches and sockets. It includes a number of other tools, and you should be able to tackle about 90% of the nuts and bolts on moderns vehicles. The plastic case is a nice idea, poorly executed. The blow molded plastic doesn't hold onto the sockets very well, and jostling can caus them to jump out of their place and jam the drawer when it needs to be opened and closed. Each socket has its own place, though, and they are marked, but since the mark is just raised plastic in the same color it's not very visible. I expect the drawers to loosen over time, so the tight fit at the start is probably ok. The first one I received, though, had broken latches on the top - the plastic had shattered - so I'm concerned about the longevity of those black plastic latches, and since it's carried by the top those latches are critical for the handle to be of any use. The second one arrived without damage. During shipping most of the sockets were jumbled and out of their place. The drawers don't hold them in place, it's just a resting spot, so this isn't unexpected for shipping, but I'm used to clamshell cases that hold each socket in place regardless of the orientation of the kit, or whether you toss it in with the other tools. This one HAS to be upright at all times, and if you take it on a bumpy ride don't expect to find the sockets in their spots at your destination. ... show more

  • Fantastic quality tools, if a little pricy Fantastic quality tools, if a little pricy
Let me start by saying that these tools are extremely high quality. I have used various brands over the years, but I keep coming back to Craftsman. This particular set is not made in the US, but the quality is top notch. Compared to a "big box" store's brand, the wrenches are heavier, thicker, and feel like they will last a lifetime. There are 3 socket wrenches, the biggest measuring in at 9 1/2" (24cm) and 673g. Substantial. The combination wrenches are about 50% thicker than the big box brand and have a nice polish. Tolerances are great - the 12mm wrench measures 12.04mm, which is just enough play to easily get around a nut/bolt, but not enough to feel loose. So many choices: If you need to tighten a bolt, maybe a 12mm, there are literally 6 types of sockets and then the combo wrench. Includes almost every driver bit I can think of, plus ratchet compatible bits for tight, 90 degree use where a screwdriver handle will not fit. All the Allen wrenches you'll probably ever need are included. I am having trouble coming up with cons, but I have a few things to consider that would improve the set: 1. The plastic toolbox does not scream Craftsman quality, but it is very serviceable. If you are like me, these tools will end up in a proper tool case. 2. The bits were all over the place due to shipping. They were all contained within their compartments but took time to sort it all out. Actually, that was kind of fun. 3. A ratcheting screwdriver would have been nice 4. Needs more wrench sizes. Includes SAE: 1/4" - 9/16", Metric: 9-12mm. Would like 5/8", 3/4" and 5-8mm, 13-16mm. I'll probably buy those as one offs. 5. Even just one adjustable wrench would be a great addition ... show more

  • Great starter set Great starter set
Got this to carry in my toolbox in case of emergencies. Has a very nice selection of sockets and wrenches in 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 drive as well as your torx and allen bits for working on your car or around the home. The sockets go up to a 19mm which should be good for brakes alternator etc but you may need a bigger size depending on your vehicle if you are going to be taking off pulleys or other larger components. The case is nice but the buckles do feel a bit cheap and brittle. Since they hold the entire weight of the set up I hope it does not become an issue. The front swing out doors are difficult at first and since they are held in by pressure I can see them becoming loose over time. I don't plan to give it that much use as it is an emergency case so I don't think that will be an issue for me. The tools themselves tho are high quality and have a lifetime warranty so you can't beat that. ... show more

  • I received broken tools in a mess of a case.. In theory, this is a good starter set.
Well, something specific to my set (I hope) is that two ratchets came broken and unusable. Several sockets came with burrs that were sharp enough to cut you. Apparently I got very unlucky and got the set that was put together by someone having a terrible day. The entire case was a huge mess when I opened it up. I spent about 10 minutes putting everything back into it's correct place. I contacted Craftsman about these issues and they were very quick to respond. It took a couple weeks but they eventually told me they are sending me replacement ratchets. I asked if they would also replace the other damaged tools, and then I was told to send the entire set into their warranty evaluation team on the other side of the country. This would cost me roughly 100 dollars. The tools, that did not arrive damaged, seem to be okay quality. It's Craftsman. A budget brand that is living off it's name from years past. This is not the same Craftsman, sadly, but they are not the worst tools you could buy. The tools I received, and the warranty process, was enough for me. I'll never purchase anything from Craftsman in the future. ... show more

  • I have issues I have issues
The tools are fine. Not top shelf but they are good and serviceable. The case on the other hand is awful. Most of the components were loose in the case when I got it. That is not a problem, I am sure it was dropped while shipping. Just trying to get the sections open was bad. The drawers have two flaps to keep them in place. I bent my thumbnail back just trying to open them I had to pry them open with a screw driver. I even tried working them so it would be easier. So far it is not. The latches are not as bad but they are not easy. I am taking a star away because it is really really hard to get into. The tools really are fine. The case is trash. ... show more

  • High quality tool set from a well known name brand
This tool set comes with a wide selection of metric and SAE sockets, a few wrenches, some torx and allen sockets, plus a larger than usual assortment of smaller allen wrenches. It's a pretty basic starter set of tools, but a high quality, solid brand name one, backed by a lifetime warranty. It comes in a sturdy plastic case with a hinged lid and three drawers. The drawers are kept in place by a hinged "flap door" on each side that snap in place. They are difficult to open. I had to use two hands to pull each one open. That means they are secure and won't let the drawers slide out in transport. But, you might could also injure your fingers trying to get them open. Maybe with time the nubs will wear down a little and make the doors a little less resistant to opening. The case also has a handle on top for carrying. It weighs about 35 lbs. I wouldn't want to be hiking with it, but it's light enough to move around when I need to. Because it's a high quality brand name with a lifetime warranty, I think it is a good value at this price. ... show more

  • Great set for someone starting with nothing Great set for someone starting with nothing
I’m going to have to break this review into parts because there is so much to cover in this set. Starting with the case. The case is a 3/5 star. Blow molded plastic always feels “puffy” and results in a ton of wasted space. The whole thing ends up being far larger than it needed to be. Additionally the locking wings that hold the drawers in place were so hard to open I had to use a pry tool. Also there is no retention for most of the tools in the drawers so if you tip the case you’ll be greeted to a fun mess when you try to open the drawer. The top drawer was also warped up in the center so the sockets in that area tended to catch on the top and get knocked out of place when opening the drawer. The only good thing about the case is that the drawers can pull out completely to use as tool trays. The sockets are the star of this set, easily 4 or 5 star. They are all well finished, fit like they should and have ball detent notches on all four inner sides. They fit tightly on the respective ratchets and have easy to read etchings. The ratchets are 3 or 4 stars simply because the direction switches were often locked unless you applied counter pressure to the anvil. The ratchets also all had a large amount of drag. More than any other ratchets I own. But they are finished nicely and the sockets fit easily and snugly. The hex wrenches are a mixed bag. Nice holders and a good selection of sizes. Unfortunately the largest keys of both SAE and Metric sets appears to be rusty. I have no idea why just those keys look that way. The wrenches are very basic wrenches, no ratcheting ends here. That’s ok because they are well made wrenches. The issue is that there are barely any wrenches. Compared to the generous selection of sockets the wrench selection feels paltry. The bit selection is actually pretty good too, 4 stars. I do wish one of the bits was a 1/4 hex to 1/4 square socket adapter so the sockets could be used with the included magnetic bit holder handle. All in all, I’m impressed with the amount of tools you get in this set. For me, I will be rehousing all these tools into a smaller SUV friendly trunk toolbox. With the addition of a few other tools this set can be a great foundation for a car tool set. Sockets are great, ratchets are ok, bits are good, wrenches are ok, case is not good. ... show more
