Got these for our 2 1/2 year old nephew. Think they would work for a significant range of developmental stages. I figured the fishing pole might be a little too hard for a kid his age (too much fine motor control), but he did actually use it (in water) with a little help. For kids learning or already able to swim, they could be fun to go retrieve from around the pool. He mostly enjoyed using the included nets to scoop the fishes out of the water from the steps of our pool. Everything floated well. You can easily pull them under the water, then release and they will sort of flutter up to the surface which gives a nice lively effect. The storage bag was super handy and even works as a net to scoop them up from the water when you're done playing. I got the smallest set ("large"), and there was plenty of variety. They are brightly colored, with lots of different animals represented; although not exactly the ones that are pictured. The kid recognized some of the animals, some were new to him, and he definitely had a handful of favorites. Not amazing quality, but it really didn't matter. The fishes each have a small phillips head screw in them which acts as the magnetic anchor; I tightened one that was slightly loose on arrival. Also had to re-tie the worm on the end of the fishing rod that came loose during play. Because of that I would recommend no unsupervised play with these, but we were doing that anyway because water. Such a cute idea - the fishing rod expands to just the right size for a young child. And the fact that it actually reels is great. There is plenty of variety among the sea creatures included. Can be used in the bathtub, the pool or a small pond.

This is such a cute toy and a great idea! However we have hard wood floors and my son hit the hook on the floor and it broke in half. I understand that’s not what the pole is intended for but it just shows how cheap it is made. Also when I dumped the fish out a slider also came with it (ugh!)

These have been so fun to use. I would say they’re great for ages 2-4. My youngest has so much fun fishing in the splash pad or water table. The magnets(tiny screws) on the fish are strong enough to be picked up easily by the fishing rods. The fish rods take a minute for little ones to figure out, but they work well. ... show more

I’m really pleased with this set! I bought it for almost-3 year old twins and it’s the perfect bath toy for this age! It comes with TWO fishing poles and two nets, so there’s no fighting over who gets what, and the variety of animals is really fun! The fishing poles are easy to reel in, and the magnets are nice and strong so if you dangle the hook near enough to one of the fish it clicks right together, it’s not too frustrating even for little kids to successfully make catches. The fish feel super light and kind of cheap but it does mean they all float and none have taken on water so far. Some of them look a little odd but that hasn’t made it any less fun to play with! Definitely worth what I paid for it anyway! Updated a few months later- this set is still fun and getting regular use in my house. After several months of use in the bathtub there is some rust around the screws in the fish but it doesn’t affect the use. However, the plastic around one of the fishing rods broke and the magnet fell out. Disappointing because now we’re down to one fishing rod for two kids. ... show more
