The recorder was the first instrument I learned how to play in elementary school. I played it for a few years, getting better and better. Even had a performance accompanied by piano in my church. And then in 5th grade, they start the band program. The transition from recorder to saxophone was pretty easy as far as fingerings as they are nearly identical for natural notes. As a result of of the recorder playing, while everyone else was on lesson 1 with their chosen band instrument, I was quickly onto lesson 12. I maintained this headstart for quite some time and went on to play in concert band, marching band, and Jazz band. The last one I was able to often be featured on solos. And it was all thanks to the recorder. I was giddy like a child when I received this and immediately opened it up. It has a nice sleeve that it goes in, but I barely noticed as I brought it to my lips and played. Recorders are pretty basic instruments, but it all came back to me, including the fingerings for sharps and flats that are quite a bit different than they are on sax. I immediately rattled off pieces of 4 or 5 different tunes that were still lurking in the corners of my brain. Is this a showpiece or professional instrument? Of course not. But it is a REAL instrument, that is fun for anyone, and can be a great starting point before transitioning to other woodwind instruments. Now, I am off to find the sheet music to Stairway to Heaven and there may be an alto recorder in my future. ... show more

I think for the price of this recorder and the intended user, the quality of the instrument is fine. But I need to comment on the instruction sheet because you will need some other reference. I usually do not focus on the instructions that come with a product because most things are easy to figure out, but in this case, a clear set of instruction is necessary. I could use something better and I think that any first time user needs a clear presentation of how to play each note. Unfortunately, the sheet that was included with this instrument is difficult to read, even with a magnifying glass. In one spot, the scale is open but above it is a fingering pattern. Why? I have 2 symbols for CLOSED - 1 solid, the other not solid, or is there just ink missing?... 2 symbols for OPEN -- 1 solid line, another dashed... Why? And 2 other symbols that are not crisp indicating 1/3 to 1/4 open. What? Maybe it's me but I think it would have been better to supply something clearer - a scale with notes, or just simple lettering C C# D Eb E etc. that corresponds to the fingerings... printed crisply at a size that can be read without magnification. ... show more

This is a great first instrument for kids to learn and play. Durable instrument that will withstand rough play. With time the cleaning rod will teach them more about maintaining instruments. Comes with a nice sleeve and instructions (which aren't much good). There are plenty of videos online that will teach you how to play. Overall a decent value for the money. ... show more

This little recorder is well made and the tone sounds pretty good. I am excited to introduce it to my toddler as part of our homeschooling routine! I don't think I'll be using the provided instruction sheet but there are plenty of other resources out there to get her started.
