  • Highly Recommended
Format: Paperback
This is one of the tomes on the topic. David Patterson is renowned in the industry and is well known for his work on MIPs and other architectures including RISC V. In fact, earlier versions of this book --the so-called "Blue Book" -- used MIPs as the foundation and the astute reader will note the many similarities in the RISC V and MIPs instruction sets. Patterson & Hennessy are also well known for Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach. But I have found throughout my career that the Organization book is a bit more suited to the hand's on software engineer, designer, or architect than the more theoretical work. And it is worth noting that even though AI can be extremely useful in today's software development environment, it can't beat having this book in your toolbox when when core concepts need review or when the bot produces questionable results . ... show more

  • The best book on the subject, period!
Format: Paperback
First off, any technical book published by Morgan Kauffman is great! This book is extremely approachable. Quite dense in some areas, but that's good to keep the page count low. I'm not done with it, but so far I have loved every bit. It's entertaining and very informative. The authors are excellent teachers. And the subject is an interesting one. I'm particularly interested in the RISC-V ISA, which makes this edition the ideal one for me. Buy it and read it. ... show more

  • The page numbers are now incorrect due to some updates this week (2024-05-13)
Format: Kindle
The page numbers were correct when I started reading it. BUT, all of sudden, it increased and now it doesn't match the description in the book anymore. (e.g. Ch.5-8 was on p.464, but now it's on p.1081, while in the book it also refers to it as p.464) It's still valid on 2024-05-04, and the next time I notice it on 2024-05-13, it's invalid. I'm not sure it's due to the update of "kindle app" on my ipad mini 5 or the update of the "file" of the book. Anyway, please fix it, thx. ... show more

  • Pleasure and Pain
Format: Paperback
It was really helpful for ECE 437 at Purdue. The pages are crunchy from all the tears I shed. :(

  • Interesting read
Format: Paperback
I just got the book and so far it appears very detailed. I got it to get a deeper inside into the RISC-V processor. It is a professional curiosity of mine. I have to give a special thanks for "The Wisdom Shop" to sent the book again since the first sent didn't arrive at my door, excellent service indeed! ... show more

  • Well-known textbook on Computer Organization
Format: Paperback
The book provides comprehensive contents , being a good one as a reference along with other academic books.

  • Hard to follow and even harder to navigate
Format: Paperback
I cannot recommend this for beginners. The book suffers from two major issues: Assumed Knowledge: It skips over foundational "pre-req" concepts, assuming you already have a background in the subject. If you aren't already familiar with digital logic, you'll be lost by chapter two. Annoying Organization: The way the book is sliced into various sections (like "The Big Picture" and "Hardware/Software Interface") feels forced. Instead of a cohesive explanation, the information is scattered. You end up losing the "thread" of the lesson because the layout keeps pulling your attention in different directions. ... show more
