Story In Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Ultimate Edition the desperate leadership of a doomed Soviet Union travels back in time to change history and restore the glory of Mother Russia. But the time travel mission goes awry, creating an alternate timeline where technology has followed an entirely different evolution, a new superpower has been thrust on to the world stage, and World War III is raging. The Empire of the Rising Sun has risen in the East, making World War III a three-way struggle between the Soviets, the Allies, and the Empire with armies fielding powerful over-the-top weapons and technologies like tesla coils, Kirov war blimps, massive samurai robots, armored bears, dolphins with sonic weapons, floating island fortresses, and transforming tanks. Gameplay In true Command & Conquer form, action in Red Alert 3 Ultimate Edition is based on classic RTS gameplay. Through this players align themselves with either the Allies, the Soviets or the Empire of the Rising Sun, and proceed to establish bases, manage collected resources from controlled territories and escalate technology acquisition in order to eventually eliminate battlefield rivals. Throughout the game players will utilize the franchises familiar mechanism of churning out an array of buildings, units and vehicles to facilitate this, but will also be faced with a series of new variables. Some of these will come in the form of new, powerful units like the Empire of the Rising Sun's Shogun Executioner, a giant mech wielding energy blades, the armored attack bears of the Soviets and the sonic attack of the Allies' dolphin ship, but there is also a change to the game's terrain to consider. Now in addition to battle on, and over land, players also have to be aware of the realities of naval warfare, as combat is extended to the waters on their borders. Another aspect of RTS gameplay that Red Alert 3 Ultimate Edition address is the need for superior control functionality. Too often when a PC RTS game makes the leap to gaming consoles, shedding keyboard and mouse functionality, players experience a reduced ability to respond quickly to attacks via unit production and/or changes to production. This is not the case in Red Alert 3 Ultimate Edition. Through its radial command menu, which utilizes the DualShock 3's analog stick and the 'X' button, players can execute commands with three button presses or less and can queue up production of units to occur as resources are gathered to supply them. In addition, commands to existing units on the battlefield and your commanders are easily facilitated by controller shortcuts, such as a single face buttons to select/deselect all on screen units and another to direct their movements, providing a fast way to make immediate field commands.Key Game Features: Ultimate Red Alert 3 Experience - Bloopers & outtakes, behind the scenes, developer strategy videos, and new battleground maps not found anywhere else. Enjoy your favorite songs from the soundtrack and study tactics with the unit profiles video encyclopedia. Watch the women of RA3 heat up the camera in the "Girls of RA3" featurette –all presented in HD Blu-ray with enhanced visuals, and only for the PS3.It’s Always Better With Someone Else - Fight your way through three campaigns solo, or join forces with your friends or one of nine, in-game commanders, each with unique personalities and play styles, in missions designed from the ground up for co-op play.Star-Studded Storytelling - Command & Conquer’s trademark live-action videos return in HD, with over 60 minutes of footage featuring the largest cast in the history of the Command & Conquer franchise.Command the Seas, Conquer the World - Experience gameplay as if for the first time in the series, waging war on the water will be every bit as important as dominating by land and air. Gain strategic advantages by controlling resources in the seas and mounting three- pronged attacks from all directions.A New Threat From the East - The deadly Empire of the Rising Sun is a technological terror, with designs influenced by a mixture of anime, science-fiction, martial arts and robot culture. The Empire’s futuristic units can transform into alternate forms, and they specialize in naval warfare.CommandStick 2.0 - Improving on the CommandStick interface first pioneered in Command & Conquer 3 Kane’s Wrath, PS3 owners will get an unparalleled console RTS experience, with controls designed for PS3 gamers, accessible to gamers of all skill levels.PlayStation Network Trophies - Red Alert 3 Ultimate Edition features 50 PSN trophies spread throughout the single player and multiplayer campaigns.Plenty of Multiplayer Options In addition to 4-player versus online skirmish functionality, Red Alert 3 Ultimate Edition also features a fully co-operative campaign mode where you and a friend can team up and play together. Through this mode players can develop their team-based combat strategy both over all and in the immediate sense of the battles at hand. Co-op functionality is also available with the help of one of several AI commander in the event that your friends aren't online. New Empire of the Sun faction. View larger. • A Real Red Alert Fan Loves This Game No Matter What
I got this game because just a few weeks before EA was offering Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge for free on Origin, and I wanted more. RA2 grabbed me by the throat and thrust me deep into a strategy-packed mania, and I wanted to go further and actually purchase the sequel. So, does Red Alert 3 live up to the standards set by its predecessor? The answer is mostly "yes", however I still feel that Red Alert 2 is the one that set the bar and has a good reason for being the successful iteration that it was and still is. But Red Alert 3 is able to carry on that feeling of a fun tongue-in-cheek fictional war strategy game that the series is known for. The fact that it's on PlayStation 3 does not bother me one bit, though that may be because I favor the PS3 and consoles in general to playing games on PC. So what does Red Alert 3 on PS3 have? Well, it's pretty much a port of the game which originally came out on PC and Xbox 360, and I have to say I was skeptical to get a RTS game on a console because of its interface that has been traditionally built for PC systems. However I am one who likes to break tradition at times, and my gamble paid off since the controls are very well suited to the controller. Bringing up the build menu is easy since it uses the trigger button, and the items are sorted out in a wheel fashion as opposed to the regular bar on a PC. This allows me to build up my units and structures with a smooth flick of my fingers. I would like to mention that there have been times I played this game and I went completely fluid with my process of base-building and unit training. Once I got all the controls down (thanks in no small part to the well-crafted tutorial), I was blazing through battles like a true strategy game commander. I'm no stranger to strategy games either, having played StarCraft and Age of Empires back in my day. The Command & Conquer series was one I had unfortunately missed out on, but thanks to the Red Alert games and the time I spent watching my cousin playing Generals, I have developed a new-found interest in the C&C series. Speaking of Generals, RA3 continues the style set by that game of having a fully 3-D strategy environment. While I have grown up with fixed isometric strategy games, this new direction is a great way for the genre to continue forward. It also helps that it shows off its rather gorgeous graphics, which are vibrant and colorful and appropriate for its often cheesy tone. The water effects are simply the best I've seen in a strategy game, and the PS3 runs everything very well with little to no slowdown. The only graphical problems occur when there are a lot of units on screen and chaos is taking over. It's also the reason that each player is limited to 50 units max, and one of the few actual problems with the console versions. Though I give this game 5 stars, it's not without its faults. The biggest issue with me is the population limit, but that can also force the player to be more strategic with their forces. It's a double-edged sword, and I feel that 50 is still too small and perhaps 100 would have been better. Another issue that I hear people talking about is the lack of keyboard and mouse support. I personally have no problem with this, since I seem to be able to grasp the PS3 controller interface well enough for my own good. I've even beat a brutal-level opponent using smart tactics I learned from other players, and I was able to execute them on the controller with ease after a few skirmish rounds. Another very minor issue for me is the way the cutscenes present the women. Don't get me wrong, I love sexy women in short skirts and midriffs, but I would like to have seen some women who can also cover up and look professional. Red Alert 2 had a balance between women who wore revealing outfits and women who dressed neatly. If RA3 had done that I would have enjoyed its modern sitting even more, but what we have here is not going to hurt much. I know I may have wrote quite a bit about the negative aspects of this game, but in truth they are very minor and easy to dismiss once I'm in strategy command mode. I forgot to mention the extras, which include making-of videos and unit profiles and even a soundtrack menu. I love the music in this game, with its mix of metal like we hear in the classic "Hell March" to the more subtle tunes in the some of the gameplay stages. There are also extra maps on the PS3 version, and I even downloaded a free map pack from the PSN store to ensure my RA3 plays continue for a long time. In short, I love Red Alert 3 on the PS3. Perhaps what I liked most about it is that it's one of the few RTS games to release on the system, and it brings the classic feel with from the old days with a new coat of paint (read: graphics). It also removed my doubts of such a game being playable on the system. People who dislike this game I feel are either stuck in the past and cannot move forward or just unwilling to accept the fact that an RTS can be good on a system like the PS3. It's fun, it's engrossing when you really get into it, and it's definitely worth my purchase. ... show more

  • Finally Command and Conquer for new consoles
I have been a big fan of command and conquer for a while. I started out with the first on ps1 and played through until I got a decent computer and bought the first decade collection. I liked the PC versions and have been waiting for a new console version other than the old PS1 stuff on the Playstation Network. The game is smooth, having the ability to work with a computer or another person online is a cool idea. you can't control their units but you can tell them to hold their ground or attack a certain position, etc. cut scenes are the typical cheesy over acting and uniforms are outrageously inaccurate but if you are buying it for military accuracy and not for the RTS genre, you should probably not buy it. the actors are, however, pretty big names: tim curry is by far the most recognizable. if you don't know who that is, he checked Kevin McAllister into the hotel, and if you don't know who kevin is...kill yourself, you are too young. the only qualms I have with it is that the control interface is a little difficult to get used to. you have alternate attacks, every unit can go through water, the fast pace of the game is a little difficult to start out with, and the R2 button has to be pressed to cycle through a build menu. gets tough because you choose with your joystick and you must be precise or build the wrong unit. all in all a good addition to the command and conquer franchise. ... show more

  • Horrible game
I’ve played and won every Red Alert, Command and Conquer, Dune and such game out there and this is a unplayable worthless D-list version of a once great game. Even on the easiest of settings, not 5 minutes into the game, the computer unloads super weapons, you can’t defend and can’t stop and can’t hurt, that begin to destroy your forces. The classic build defend build up move and destroy your enemy scenario we have all come to love and device strategies for is impossible in this game. Clearly this is the fault of the weakest Artificial Intelligence design in the history of gaming. No real strategies here at all. The scale is a lot like the difference between a real Civilization computer game and the Civilization game for PS3. We can live with this. But unlike Civilization Revolution for PS3, this game has no game playability at all. It is not worth a dollar much less the 25 I paid for it. Unfortunately, this seems to be a trend in the industry that is crashing down around them. SOMEONE BUILD A TIME MACHINE SO I CAN GO BACK TO THE 80’s WHEN THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF GREAT GAMES TO PLAY THAT ENTERTAINED ME FOR HOURS UPON HOURS. ... show more
