  • Wish I had read the reviews....
Size: 1 Pack
I had stuck this in my wish list long ago and apparently didn't read the reviews before purchasing. I really wish I had. The first time I used this it was making weird sizzling noises and the second time I used it, it split in half. It's not necessarily unusable now the the sizzling, crackling and popping are a bit unnerving. It actually made the piece I was working on jump at one point. I have a smaller piece are charcoal I have had for years that has never reacted this way and is still in one piece. I guess next time I will got back to my original source....this was a disappointment. ... show more

  • Compressed charcoal is my favorite kind of soldering block for brazing and fusing silver
Size: 1 Pack
Compressed charcoal is my favorite kind of soldering block for brazing and fusing silver. I've purchased and tried lots of other things, including "solderite", "silquar", and magnesia blocks. This works the best for me, but the blocks do break down (burn) and the surface becomes uneven. You can re-level and extend the life by rubbing on a concrete block, but should plan on periodic replacment. (By the way, solderite is next best, in my experience. It breaks down less quickly, at least at lower heat (e.g., butane torch), but at higher heat (oxy-propane, HHO) it melts and forms pits just like the burned areas of the charcoal, and you don't have the option of re-leveling (too thin).) ... show more

  • Cracked in half the first time I used it
Size: 1 Pack
My last charcoal brick (not purchased through Amazon) lasted at least 5 months before cracking in half. This one didn't last five minutes. It didn't have a mark on it, but after a few minutes, it cracked right down the middle. I'm not using a big acetylene torch either - I was just annealing some copper with a small butane torch. Once the bricks break like this, they wear out really quickly and this one is already well on its way. The picture shows what it looked like after an hour light of use - I annealed a few small pieces of metal maybe 8 times - after the crack happened. This thing will be toast in no time. Total waste of money. I'm headed to Rio Grande to buy a new one. ... show more

  • Poor packaging. Arrived broken. Not hard charcoal.
Size: 1 Pack
Packaging was very bad. Just saran wrapped inside a bubble mailer so naturally it arrived broken in multiple locations. Otherwise seems to be a decent hard charcoal block for soldering. I won't be ordering again. ***Edited to add to review that upon use this isn't a compressed charcoal brick for soldering. Catches fire, cracks. It's definitely soft charcoal. Suitable for creating prong settings don't purchase otherwise. ... show more

  • Is it the right product?!
Size: 1 Pack
I bought this product a year ago. I just rebought it pretty much a year later. The product I bought a year ago I would give 5 stars to. This time as you can see 1 star! This was supposed to be an extra hard charcoal soldering block. Not what I received. My sister bought a block which ended up being just like this and was useless. I only used the one I received cause I needed a new clean block. Well that was just a couple of days ago and it is already useless. Very disappointed!!!! Next time I know its not right I will definitely not use and return right away. I repurchased the same product again from the same seller hoping it was a mistake and that they will fix the problem. I guess we'll see. Crossing my fingers! ... show more

  • Disappointing
Size: 1 Pack
The unit arrived in a timely manner. It was smaller than anticipated. My bad. Using it for the 1st time I noticed it appeared to be a chunk of charcoal as opposed to a pressed piece. After heat was applied layer began to curl upward. I will only sparingly until I can find a suitable replacement for my cracked block. Hate to say it but can not really recommend it. ... show more

  • Upon first use, the block split in two as ...
Size: 1 Pack
Upon first use, the block split in two as I was soldering a jewelry piece. This happened quite suddenly, and separated approximately 1/4 inch, with my project right in the middle of the two. It made quite a "pop" when it split. After it split, I could see that it was smoking and glowing red 2/3 into the block. Luckily, the "pop" wasn't any bigger than it was. I have used many charcoal blocks and have not experienced this before. ... show more

  • Great for Medium size soldier jobs
Size: 1 Pack
Lasting a long time. I wrapped a wire around the edges to keep it from expanding and cracking, it has kept it in one piece for two years now. I don't like the mess it creates when the flux mixes with it on the silver. Maybe, I will invest in a better quality board. If you need it to hold heat for bigger projects, this will do the job, less heat use the white block. ... show more
