  • First Light Report: Celestron NexStar Evolution 8
Why I Upgraded: About two years ago, I purchased a EQ mounted reflector, a Celestron AstroMaster 130EQ MD. Knowing that it was an entry level model, I wanted to learn more about telescopes and decide if it was something in which I wished to invest. That scope was easy to move outside when the time was right and the motor drive made the viewing sessions pretty painless. I was able to study the most familiar planets, but the lack of aperture or goto function meant I got discouraged pretty quickly. I decided to upgrade, so the scope was sold and I started saving and researching. Choosing a Scope: Finding an affordable scope with a computerized goto mount was a priority for me. I knew there was a lot up in the sky to look at, but I was not yet experienced enough to find it all on my own. The second most important feature would be size, as I did not want to compromise on the capability of the optics; I needed something at least 6”. I quickly began learning about the NexStar scopes, which offer a compact size with computerized mounts. The reviews were positive, so I kept saving. I learned that these Alt-Az mounts were not optimal for photography, aside from planetary images, but I wanted to concentrate on planets, anyhow. (The NexStars are capable of operating in EQ Mode with an optional wedge.) Once I found about the newest line from Celestron, called NexStar Evolution, I knew I had found what I was looking for. The only problem was that they cost more than the previous NexStar models. Since I would be investing a respectable amount in this scope, I made the decision to save for the 8” model. The new scopes have a number of useful features: Firstly, they have a self-contained battery, so there is no need for AA batteries or external Power Tank. Secondly, the computerized mount can be controlled with a tablet or phone, which makes the interaction a joy. The third best thing is the sturdiness of the hardware, including the metal worm-driven gears and solid tripod. Other useful features include: red accessory tray lighting and manual clutches. It has everything I need! I ordered through Amazon (Adorama Camera), and received the telescope within 48 hours, along with an extensive eyepiece and filter kit to add to my collection. First Light: During the first weekend of ownership, I was blessed with a clear night sky. It was a great opportunity to learn about its use and capabilities. I carefully moved everything outside before dusk and waited for the first stars to appear. Once I saw three of the brightest stars, I followed the alignment procedure and within minutes, I was viewing and tracking objects! The very first thing I wanted to see was Saturn. My old telescope had some decent views, but the new equipment provided a noticeably brighter and clearer image, allowing me to see great definition in the rings, especially with the 6mm eyepiece (which was useless on the 130mm scope). Using the SkyPortal app, I was able to view some of the objects in its “Tonight’s Best” list, including the beautiful Wild Duck Cluster. Before I put it way, I directed the app to Neptune, Uranus, Pluto, and Andromeda for my first time ever! By the time the clouds rolled in, I was satisfied, so I packed it all up and went inside. Pros: The entire assembly is easily disassembled and moved, even in the dark. There are three locking thumbscrews under the mount, which “snaps” into place when set on the tripod. At approximately 30lbs, the mount+OTA can be safely carried together with integrated handles. The free Celestron SkyPortal app contains a respectable number of object with an educational interface, through which connecting to the scope is very simple. A paid upgrade to SkySafari Pro unlocks tens of thousands of additional objects, along with some additional features. Smart details, such as: brass worm gears, integrated level, manual clutches, LED tray lighting, and USB charging port. Integrated battery w/ excellent battery life. Cons: The app can be a little sluggish to respond to slewing commands and is susceptible to WiFi interference. The cost is significantly higher than comparable NexStar SE for identical optics. About the NexStar Evolution 8: Aperture: 203.2mm Focal Length: 2032mm OTA Design: Schmidt-Cassegrain Mount Type: Single Fork Arm Altazimuth Controls: Handheld remote and integrated WiFi interface Power: Lithium-Ion Battery with 10-hour capacity and USB charging port. AC Adapter Incl. Future Plans: I’ve already installed my Telrad finder w/ Dew Shield+, although the included red dot finder would be adequate for many users. I also added a lens shade, T-Adapter, and vibration suppression pads. Next, I will add a travel/storage case, additional red LED lights, and focal reducer. ... show more

  • 2014 version of this telescope, older hand controller.
The telescope seems to be working, though I do have problems with it. From additional reading on web forums, new telescopes should come with a manual printed in 2016, and hand controllers with a mini-USB connection. Telescopes from this seller seem to be a significantly older 2014 version with the manual is from 2014, dated firmware, and the hand controller with the RS-232 phone jack style connector. And no, Celestron does not pack a cable inside the box for us. Yes, the assessory box with additional eyepieces and filters is a very good addition. I bought a separate 8mm to 24mm zoom, but the included eyepieces are a better deal. Just wish I had the USB hand controller. It is a $100 item from Celestron. 3 stars for the older parts. ... show more

  • ... phone settings where it would try to find the best working Internet and since connecting to the built in ...
Had some initial issues with the wifi but I believe it was attributed to my phone settings where it would try to find the best working Internet and since connecting to the built in wifi doesn't connect to the Internet, it would switch networks on me. So, if you are trying to use this with your phone, go into Settings to turn off auto-switching for best Internet or something like that. Other than that, the GoTo and tablet/mobile app is a great feature. I still use the Handheld which has some quirky behavior (or is a feature I'm not accustomed to) where it jumps fast after like 3 pushes. I sound like I'm complaining but the telescope is fantastic and I was able to see objects I couldn't with the naked eye. Also, setup and tear down is super fast. This is probably one of the best parts about this telescope. This makes using it a lot less painful and you'll be more inclined to use it more. Totally recommend it if it is within your budget. ... show more

I can never get this telescope to track very well. Objects always drift out of eye piece view within 3 minutes. Scope is also very heavy. Don't plan on taking the scope in/out of your house in one piece without a lot of effort.

  • Well worth the money for a beginning to intermediate astronomer.
I have had it for about a month. Easy to set up and use. I live in a pretty light polluted area but I am still able to get good views of stars, star clusters, nebula, planets, and of course the moon. There are a lot of how to videos available that I recommend you watch for easy set up and alignment. Once you align 3 stars everything else is easy. I use the free program available from celestron on my iPad and iPhone to operate. I prefer the phone it is much easier. wifi is easy to connect. ... show more
