  • A wonderfully fun Telescope for a very reasonable price.
Style: Cometron Set: Telescope Only
The Celestrong Cometron 114AZ was rated as one of the Best entry level scopes by Space.com [...] I had a telescope when I was growing up and I wanted to share that with my son. I also didn't want to break the bank as I wasn't sure how often we would use it. I read up on quite a few scopes, and decided that the Celestron Cometron 114AZ fit my requirements. Setting it up was super easy, and the stand alone seems worth the price of admission. It is a very solid, steel framed tripod. For kids, the tripod is great as you can adjust the legs to the height that works for them too. Additionally the 2 included eyepieces give 2 nice zoom levels, and I added a 5mm Eyepiece to give us a bit tighter zoom for more distant objects. (To give you an idea, a 5mm eyepiece focused on the moon allows you to see about 40% of the moon at a time. With the 10mm eyepiece, the moon takes up the entire field of view.) I really enjoy the included spotting scope too. It is adjustable so that your spotting scope and your Telescope are pointed at the same object. This makes the initial pointing of the scope towards your subject that much easier. So far we haven't had a chance to look at any planets as they have been below the horizon for many of the nights and times we have gotten out, but even looking into black areas of the sky with a telescope is mind blowing, to see how many stars are out there we can't typically see. Additionally, the Reflector style scope is pretty cool to use vs a traditional refractor scope. The one note I would make: Everything is mirror imaged using this scope, so when you are looking through it, moving left looks right, right looks left, up and down are reversed too. Getting used to this while adjusting your field of view takes some getting used to. There is a Porro-Prism eye piece that can be added to fix this. My understanding is that this is standard behavior in all Reflector scopes. ... show more

  • Decent Entry Level Telescope
Style: Cometron Set: Telescope Only
This is our first telescope into the night sky. It is a manual scope (no GPS), so be prepared to manually track the celestial objects. Setting it up was straight forward. It comes with two eye pieces, and one moon cover (to reduce the amount of light intake). It has a maximum magnification of 269x. Our first observation was the moon, which looked really great. We could see the craters and other details. We first tried with 10mm eyepiece, then used the 5mm for more detail zoom in view. Finding the other night objects required some patience and we needed help with GPS phone apps (like night sky), which helped identify which celestial objects were available for view in the area, and in what position. After that we had to manually point the scope. You will need a good finder scope (The finder scope that comes with this is a joke), to help you point the telescope in the approximate direction. After that it took some wiggling and fine tuning to get it under view. The next challenge is, those objects shift fast out of your viewing area (as Earth is rotating), which is very annoying and time consuming to keep them in view. The biggest upside of this scope is its portability and price point. You will get fairly decent view if you want to deal with manual focus and tracking. I will recommend it to beginners. Once you kindle the passion of night gazing, you may advance to a more advanced GPS version. ... show more

  • Very pleased with the Cometron 114 telescope
Style: Cometron Set: Telescope Only
Very pleased with the Cometron 114 telescope. Built quality is very good. Everything comes well packaged. The primary mirror has a center spot to aid in collimation. The telescope and tripod are light weight making it a grab & go setup. Nice bright sharp views of star clusters. The mount and tripod are light weight so it takes a few seconds to settle down after you locate your target. The eyepieces are of average quality so you might want to buy a higher quality one. This is a good scope at a good price. ... show more

  • This is a starter telescope. Don’t expect to much.
Style: Cometron Set: Telescope Only
This is a beginners telescope but I’m just starting out having fun with my 5 year old girl. It’s pretty good and the moon is very brilliant in this thing. I’ll get better eye pieces to be able to see more detail for Saturn. I was able to see the rings of Saturn and 3 moons December 21st 2020. The little spotter red dot is not great. It slides around but I’m going to try some slip grip pads like my service truck has on the big bumper top. That should fix that part. My daughter did pull the lense holder out and that part of the telescope is pretty flimsy loose. Probably the number one thing I’d add and pay extra for is a better adjusting system. I hunt and all of my window mount spotting scope adjusters are smoother than this one. There’s no stabilizing weight attached to this adjustment so it’s hard to keep still. Following the planets is tough unless you keep the pivot and swivel pretty loose. I wanted to upgrade that part but for a weighted assembly you’ll pay almost what this thing cost on sale. I got it for $154 on sale. For that price it’s a very good starter telescope. My daughter is all about anything astronomy so maybe I’ll end up buying a really good top of the line some day and give this one to someone whose kids love the stars. I never sell things like this. There’s tons of people not as fortunate to have a job as me and my wife. Besides. Giving is always good for the soul. ... show more
