Packaged well and the items inside are quality. It is an OK expansion, but am not in love with it. Probably our least favorite ... beside Cities and Knights. Nothing wrong, but I guess it is that it doesn't seem a natural fit for Catan. Playing with this expansion changes the game. If you like the variation, this is a nice change of pace. We find ourselves, when selecting a game for game night, when this one comes up, more often saying "perhaps next time." ... show more

This expansion suffers from not having a unifying theme. Unlike most expansions, this is a group of expansions dumped into one box with a misnomer name. Traders and Barbarians is only two of the expansions in this box and for me, the lest interesting of the group. The major expansions, for me, are the rivers and fishermen. Rivers introduce gold and rules making basic changes to the game’s strategy. Gold can be horded or used to buy resources. Becoming the richest player is a huge advantage while being the poorest player(s) hurts. Two rivers are included with the additional pieces and rules needed. Fishermen add a lake and costal fishing. Fish can be exchange for a variety of items depending on how many you have and what you want. Again, this adds another level of strategy to the game by giving you more access to resources. This is a large expansion with lots of items that should increase your enjoyment of the game. We normally have 3-4 players and use the 5-6 player map when using this expansion. ... show more

Style: 5-6 Player Extension
If you love Catan because it's a different game every time you play, this is the best expansion for you! It contains a bunch of variations that can be used individually with your regular board, or in combination with each other. For example, in the fish scenario, one of the tiles is replaced with a pond that gives you fish when you roll 2,3,11 or 12. You can then use the fish to purchase resources, build roads or move the robber off your best tile. Another variation is a deck of cards which replaces the dice. This gives the game a much different dynamic, as it eliminates the chance-y dice. This expansion is well worth the cost - it truly enhances the Catan experience. ... show more
