After deciding we needed a new family game and doing quite a bit of research, I took my chances on Catan, a game I knew nothing about but thought might appeal to my high schooler, college students, and spouse. Though the box sat unopened for a year because the game "sounded" complicated and too much like role play, once we decided to give it a try, we were all hooked! Set up takes a minute and it might take a few rounds to get used to wheeling and dealing with your opponents, but the strategy (and sometimes cunning) is very entertaining. Truly, I'm not one for most games (though I enjoy card games such as Heart and Gin Rummy), I look forward to sitting down for a couple of hours with my family playing Catan. Somewhat similar to Monopoly in terms of buying and trading (for those who don't get bored with Monopoly before trading starts), I find Catan much more entertaining. Remember, if you want to play with more than four people, you must purchase the expansion pack, which is the only bummer. They also offer other versions that we've enjoyed such as the Seafarers version. ... show more
