  • LOVE!
Size: 5-Shelf Color: Walnut
These bookshelves are WONDERFUL! Bamboo so no harmful outgassing. They feel flimsy but they are sturdy. Love it that I can move them around by myself. Easy assembly. Walnut looks a bit more mahogany and is so elegant. I have six and buying one more.

  • The Best Bookcase For the Price - Updated!
Size: 5-Shelf Color: Espresso
Technically, this is the second bookcase I've bought. The first I bought from Wayfair, and I absolutely love that bookcase. The Mission style bookcase sold here is the EXACT same bookcase, but costs nearly half of what I paid on Wayfair. I wasn't sure it was the same bookcase, but I saw the pictures and matched the dimension, so my fingers were crossed it was the same. To my delight, when I opened the box and saw the assembly instructions were the exact same, to the letter, I did a little dance. The only difference I've found is that the included hex wrench was a bit shorter than my first bookcase's. The wood, screws, caps and accessories were all the exact same. That being said, my identical bookcase was bought about 6 months ago, and it's extremely sturdy. I have a ton of books on it and it doesn't seem to put any strain on it. It's beautiful and looks like I paid 3 times than the actual cost. Some reviewers here have really nitpicked the hell out of this bookcase, and they obviously don't have a clue how expensive solid wood bookcases that don't have any flaws really cost. Helpful Hints: I bought this bookcase twice in Espresso, which is a dark brown and any nick will show the bare, light wood under the finish. To fix this, I just take a black permanent marker to cover it and immediately rub that area with a dry paper towel. The marker ink sinks into the wood and wiping it immediately removes the marker ink that gets on the finish. The key is small areas and immediately wiping/rubbing it with a paper towel. I'm sure black or brown shoe polish would work just as well, if not better. A good tip learned from Wayfair reviews and used on my first bookcase assembly - use wood glue on the wooden dowels that are on each end of the back shelf braces (the long skinny pieces with wooden 'pegs'). Besides the pegs, also glue any loose slats on the sides. Some will be easy to move and will show the bare wood that was hidden until moved. This makes the bookcase extremely rigid and much stronger. The shelfs do come with pre-drilled pilot holes for the hex bolts, but before you start assembling, screw bolts into the pilot holes to make threads first, then remove the bolts and do the normal assembly. This will help with balancing pieces and getting screws started much easier. Some complained about the finish. Yes, it's not some really layered polyurethane finish. It's wood stain and light semi-gloss finish. If you want it to shine, just use a can/bottle of regular furniture spray wax. It'll make it look like it has 3-4 layers of glossy finish. Again, this bookcase is half the price of similar bookcases, so expecting this to have the same finish as a five hundred dollar shelf is just plain ridiculous. Update June 5th, 2023: I've bought more of these bookshelves, 6 in total now, and they are still just as amazing 3 years later as when I bought my first one. I'm almost tempted to buy one now just to store away in case I need one later in life, because the current price now is just so tempting. Again, for the price you will not find a bookshelf that is sturdier, more beautiful or spaceous. Still a 5 star rating after 3 years! ... show more

  • For the price, it looks decent and is a good value
Size: 3-Shelf Color: Espresso (New)
The GOOD: It is a good size, real wood will last longer than laminate or plastic, it is an attractive design and the finish looks decent if you don't look too closely. Wood peg inserts to cover screw holes is an upgrade from the usual plastic covers. Not hard to assemble, but awkward so it would be easier with 2 people. The BAD: It does arrive covered with filaments that look like fiberglass, so open the box and wipe down outside. The pieces are not labelled and the instructions could be clearer. For example, instructions refer to the left side but the pieces are not labeled right or left. Instructions say "make sure the tapered side faces upward", but if you do that it is wrong (as one can see from the displayed photos). It should say "make sure the beveled edge faces down". People who complained about the label being visible probably followed these (bad) instructions. Sturdy enough, but not very...but what did you expect for this price? JUST NOTED: The color looks a neutral espresso brown/ almost black in low light, but if you see it in direct sunlight there is a definite reddish tone to the finish. Works in my place, and I like it better than flat black but you may or may not like this. CONCLUSION: If you need a small set of shelves and don't want to spend much, this is a good option. I would buy again despite these caveats. ... show more

  • Quality - Looks Great - (Late 2019 review with tips)
Size: 5-Shelf Color: Walnut
I'm very satisfied with the bookcase. Under $100 it's quite a bargain. The Good: -Solid pine -Sturdy, but not heavy -Stain (walnut) is classy -Arrived without any sort of damage with all parts necessary -Instructions are clear -No nails -Assembly was a medium/light challenge (I've seen way worse) The Bad: -Big screws have square holes requiring allen wrenches (much more awkward than using a screwdriver) -Assembly time is pretty long - mainly because they only include 1 allen wrench -(Two people with wrenches would easily shave off 30 mins or so) -And the short "L" side is too long for turning 360 if you assemble it on the floor (you'll see what I mean) The Ugly: -Cranking the screws to maximum tightness can really tax the wrist and caused quite a bit of discomfort to fingers -But careful use of a power drill fixed this (dangerous) Tips: -Use T-handle allen wrenches -Really, it's worth buying them just so you don't scratch the furniture when they (will) slip out of your hand with that primitive tool -Or a screwdriver if you happen to have a changeable-bit screwdriver and the appropriate square bits ***REALLY IMPORTANT*** If you find it's very difficult to twist the big screws when they're halfway in - stop. Difficult screws didn't start going in "straight." But, there's an easy fix for that. The reason they don't go in straight is the shelves don't exactly line up with the holes if you stand them up off the floor (as pictured in the instructions.) The shelves need to be elevated off the floor slightly. Take the styrofoam padding from the box (the thin long sheets of it,) and slide it underneath the shelves to lift them slightly up off the floor. (But don't put it under the side panels.) That should be about perfect height for the holes to line up. Shine a flashlight in the hole to confirm. If not perfect, use more packing material to "shim" the shelves up off the floor until the holes are perfectly-aligned. Hand-insert the screws so they go in straight. Use tool to finish the job. When it comes time to attach the shelves to the other side, have your helper stand next to the opposite side and apply pressure with their ankle/leg as you push with your knee to screw in the other side. Viola. You've got something that looks soooooo much better than that particle-board junk. ... show more
