Description

In this 1-4 player tile-laying game, players are tasked with building an amazingly extravagant castle for King Ludwig II of Bavaria...one room at a time. You see, the King loves castles, having built Neuschwanstein (the castle that inspired the Disney theme park castles) and others, but now he's commissioned you to build the biggest, bestest castle ever — subject, of course, to his ever-changing whims. Each player acts as a building contractor who is adding rooms to the castle they're building while also selling their services to other players. In the game, each player starts with a simple foyer. One player takes on the role of the Master Builder, and that player sets prices for a set of rooms that can be purchased by the other players. The Master Builder will then pick from the leftovers after the other players have paid the Master Builder for their rooms. When a room is added to a castle, the player who built it gains castle points based on the size and type of room constructed, as well as bonus points based on the location of the room. When a room is completed, with all entrance ways leading to other rooms in the castle, the player receives one of seven special rewards. After each purchasing round, a new player becomes the Master Builder who sets prices for a new set of rooms. After several rounds, the game ends, then additional points are awarded for achieving bonus goals, having the most popular rooms, and being the most accommodating to the King's demands, which change each game. Whoever ends up with the most castle points wins!

  • Best strategy game available
Style: Castles of Mad King Ludwig
No dice, no magical deck of cards. Each player has a fair and equal chance of excelling in their own strategy.

  • Love this game and GameTrayz inserts
Style: Castles of Mad King Ludwig
What is better than a great game? A great game with thoughtful storage! Bezier games designed the box to hold not only the base game but all the expansions. Of course, that encouraged me to buy the expansions, but I would have anyway when I saw a play through with one of the expansions! The Gametrayz inserts are phenomenal, both for safe storage of the hundreds of pieces, but also easy to set up to play. The value is fantastic! The quality is very good. I was able to learn how to play the game without having to deal with the set up had the pieces been in a jumble. Such a fun game and because it is easy to get to the table, it will be played a ton! ... show more

  • Easy to learn to play. Lots of ways to score points. Lots of fun.
Style: Castles of Mad King Ludwig
Played through with my adult kids and a spouse. Really enjoyed it- enough to order the expansion right away. For FYI, we enjoy Wingspan, 7 Wonders, Settlers, Carcassone, etc. We like games where there is strategy involved and not just luck. Moving your swan along the game board helps you keep track of how you are doing versus the competition. However, there are bonus cards in the game, so you never know for sure. Glad I bought it. ... show more

  • Best game ever?
Style: Castles of Mad King Ludwig
Currently my favorite game of all time. That says a lot as we are board game fanatics. Very thinky, dense game - you have to be thinking steps ahead when making decisions. The bonus cards help to guide your choices. The bonuses you get when finishing rooms encourage you to finish certain ones before others, even if you don't optimize your points the best way possible. The most mad play wins! Just kidding. Our scores have been as much as 100 points different. Players who enjoy building up and delaying gratification will do best at this game. ... show more

  • One of my favorites!!
Style: Castles of Mad King Ludwig
One of my favorite board games we have in our collection so far!! My husband and I are a young couple in our late 20's, and we love to play games with just the two of us and with friends. A great bonus is always a game that we can play 2-player and still works nicely; this one has that ability and we love it. The game is really easy, but there are a TON of pieces.. the setup is a little annoying. BUT the gameplay is usually over an hour, sometimes close to 2 hours if you have someone playing that takes forever to decide on their move.. therefore, the setup is pretty quick compared to the amount of play you get out of it. Essentially, each player gets the chance to be the "master builder," and this rotates throughout the game. When you're the master builder, you draw cards which determine what size rooms will be in play for the next round. Then, each player can purchase any of these rooms, but must pay the master builder. Finally, the master builder goes last and pays the bank. You attach your cute, quirky little room to your castle layout, check the center icons to see if you can add points (based on what the room is adjacent to) or lose points. There are also bonuses that you keep in mind throughout gameplay such as bonus cards you draw and keep an eye on secretly, and bonuses that everyone can see (person with the most square rooms at the end, person with the most outdoor rooms, etc). Once you've gone through all of the cards, you add up all of your bonus points, and check out your fun little castles. My favorite part about this game is the creative and interesting castle layouts you end up with! It's different every single game. The key is to keep an eye on those bonuses, and try to buy rooms that meet the requirements ;) I almost always win using this strategy, hehe. We just played this game with another couple that don't really play a ton of board games and they wanted to buy it after we finished. It took a couple rounds to figure out how to play, but once you get it, it's very repetitive (in a good way). I LOVE this game, like I said, it's one of my absolute favorite games! I would recommend this for couples and families. I think a kid over 8 could probably figure it out, it's just a little overwhelming with all of the adding and subtracting points every time you add a new room, but kids are great at stuff like that usually :). Buy this game, worth every penny! ... show more

  • If the rules were better, we would have grasped it in 2 games
Style: Castles of Mad King Ludwig
I have played the game 3 times now. Essentially the game is a TON of bonuses for points that you keep track of. You try to get all the different bonuses and block others from getting them. I think my father and I have grasped the game in 3 playings, and the rules could be much clearer with examples on scoring. If the rules were better, we would have grasped it in 2 games. I do like the pieces and the different rooms have nice graphics and are interesting. There is all kinds of strategy involved as the master builder setting up the rooms for sale. You have to be paying attention to your opponents castles and money because you can block them from getting the most points. There is some strategy building your castle by completing rooms, collecting bonus cards, etc. I found that the more bonuses pursued, the better I scored in the game. I like how my castle has turned out differently each time. Building your castle is fun because it's pretty unexpected what rooms you will get and where you will put them. I don't like the 2 player game because I feel like it is easy for one player to pull way ahead. A 2 player game feels a bit short, so if the game feels a bit short, add more room cards to the deck. Even the three player game could be a little bit longer. Players commented that the upper and lower rooms could've been different thickness in cardboard, with plastic 3d staircase pieces to make it look more 3d. I think there is enough strategy involved without making the game super complicated. There is an easy to use scoreboard and room placement chart to keep things organized. It should be actually a holder to store the rooms, but I think the game went cheap with plastic baggies and no holders for the cardboard pieces. The game is in a big box that isn't even needed for what the contents actually are. I think the room piece size is right because if the pieces were bigger scale, it would take up too much space in game play. The game is expensive for what you get. I've seen it in Barnes & Noble for less than online. I wish it could be for 5 players. This is a fun neat game, but it's not a game you can play endlessly. ... show more
