This is a good expansion to have. There are 2 different ways to start the game, with the big city 2-tile starter spot, or with the new River that’s included, that splits into 2 different branches. The added Shrine played like a cloister, adds an interesting way to finish cloisters, or prevent others from getting points for their own. I really enjoy playing with the King and Robber bonuses. Adds another big bonus gain (well 2 of them) for everyone to strive for. If you’re pretty serious about Carcassonne and adding some more complexity to the game, get this expansion. And if anything, if you want to build a big long river, add this river to the regular (or more) river expansions to create a unique river world. ... show more

This expansion adds a several new features to the base game - The City of Carcassonne and the Count of Carcassonne; the King & Robber; and the Shrines. The City of Carcassonne enables a player to move a meeple to an opponent's feature before it is scored. This effectively allows you an opportunity to either wipe out an opponent's score or "steal" his points if you can take control. The King & Robber features give bonuses at the end of the game to the player who builds the largest city and longest road, respectively. And the Shrines are like monasteries, except if a shrine is placed adjacent to a monastery, then it "competes" with the monastery and the first player to completed his feature gets to score 9 points, whereas the other player gets zero points when his feature is completed. ... show more

Be careful! This is the EXPANSION of the standard game. You need purchase the base game to play. Quality is good but as an expansion with few cards the price is a little high.

We have enjoyed playing Carcassonne for a few years, so this last Christmas we introduced one of our Great Grandsons to the game. He is only 7, but I figured if he plays chess he would be able to enjoy this game, & he does! We receive a big thank you.

Box arrived in perfect shape and no pieces were missing. This is a great expansion to spice up the river expasion, give benefits for finishing features that score you no points, and having another style to start the game with the city of Carcassonne. The king and robber tiles provide other goals for end game scoring. ... show more
