Salvatore Capezio was born in 1871 in Muro Lucano, Italy. Uninterested in following in his father's footsteps as a construction engineer, he became an artist of his own right, a cobbler. In 1887, at the age of 17, he opened his shop on Broadway and 39th Street, diagonally across from the old Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. Soon, the shop became a meeting place for dancers who would stop by to discuss their needs and to get a pair of his shoes. As Capezio's popularity grew, dancers from around the world made it a point to visit him and purchase his shoes. The innovation of the products that Salvatore Capezio created and the camaraderie he shared with the dancers molded the direction that his company would follow. In this image, the Capezio brand was established to promote and recognize ongoing achievements and participation in dance. Capezio products remain in the forefront in quality and in technological advances with innovations like the split-sole, the stretch-insert, the Dansneaker and the Tapsneaker. Capezio believes that their success is dependent upon the individual commitment of each customer to continually set new standards of creativity and performance, while preserving a reputation for dependability and distinction. Capezio pledges their support and dedication to the advancement of dance, theater and recreation in communities worldwide.

  • Studio Owner Opinion
Special Size: Little Kid (4-8 Years) Size: 12 Little Kid Color: Black Patent
I am a dance studio owner and also a Mama of a 5 year old tap dancer. The reason I chose Capezio over the Bloch tap shoe is the toe box shape. My daughters toes are more straight across from big toe down to pinky, meaning they don't taper much downward diagonally. She does not have a wide foot but the Bloch shoe is so curved at the toes that it pinched her 4th and pinky toes. This Capezio tap shoe is more rounded in the toe box and gives more wiggle room for toes that are more boxy or do not taper down drastically. My daughter is big on comfort and the shape of the Capezio shoe provides that more spacious feeling. The shoe is not gaping or too big, it just isn't cramped in the toes. If you have an extremely narrow foot with tapered toes, the Bloch would fit fine. Otherwise, everyone else will like the Capezio!! Sizing: the dance store website says that this shoe should be ordered same size as street shoe. In our case, both times I ordered half size up and it worked for us. Half size up gave her a teeny room to grow. i didn't want to have to buy another pair in two months when her foot grew. As a dance teacher, a little extra room is fine but you don't want the foot sliding around. Kids can also wear socks to fill up the extra room for a while and when they grow into the shoe more, don't wear socks anymore. ... show more

  • Everything You Need In A Tap Shoe!
Special Size: Toddler (1-4 Years) Size: 9 Toddler Color: Black Patent
These tap shoes are perfect! We are on our second set of shoes. Capezio is a dependable brand & one I trust (I was a dancer for 10 years). It’s a great quality shoe will hold up for your tapping toddler. I love that there is a piece of elastic to hold the shoe on their foot vs just depending on the ribbon to hold. You could even skip using the ribbon if you want but it does look cuter with. I purchased one full size bigger than what my daughter wears. For example my daughter wears a size 8 in regular shoes (Carters, Cat & Jack) & I purchased a size 9 for her. They are a little big but will last her longer. Going a size up does not effect her dancing or walking in them. A few things to know when buying tap shoes 1. They should have a rubber grip at the ball of the foot. Cheaper tap shoes do not have them & your toddler is more likely to slip. Most dance studios recommend this too. 2. Black is the classic color the one I recommend buying. They will more than likely be required to wear black shoes for their dance recital. 3. Do not let them wear them outside. They are not made for outside & can create a lot of wear on the shoe & taps (same with ballet shoes). Also, your toddler will probably want to wear them at home (at least mine do). Please know that these shoes are very, very slippery on tile & you will need to hold onto them. If you have carpet, they will be fine if course. You should be fine with wood floors too but do hold onto them until you know for sure. ... show more

  • DO NOT follow the Capezio size chart!
Special Size: Toddler (1-4 Years) Size: 7 Toddler Color: Black Patent
I am very angry right now! I found out on Friday that my 3 yr old daughter got into a waitlisted ballet+tap class that starts tomorrow. I ordered these on Friday using the Capezio size chart. My daughter wears an 8 US, and the chart said to order a 7. WELL the chart is WRONG. These shoes are NOT the equivalent of an 8 US. They are way too small! I should have ordered the 8! I'm so upset. There's no way for me to get another order in time for her class. I'm scrambling to figure out where I can go locally to get what I need for her. This is extremely frustrating and disappointing. And AGGRAVATING because without their "helpful" chart, I would have ordered the correct size! And guess what? SAME STORY WITH THE BALLET SHOES. I am not happy at all. Edit to add: I found a local place and ended up purchasing a size 9 for my daughter. I realized that the Capezio size chart is literally backwards. The column labeled "Manufacturer size" should mean the Capezio shoe size, and the 'US" column should indicate the child's size in regular shoes. The data for the columns is switched! The chart says "Manufacturer size" "Toddler 7" corresponds with "US" size 8, which means buy a Capezio size Toddler 7 if your kid wears a US size 8 in other shoes. But the chart should be exactly the opposite because the Capezio size should be a whole size larger than the generic US size. I really don't care what anything else says in the listing or reviews. A MANUFACTURER'S SIZE CHART SHOULD BE ACCURATE. It looks like they literally mixed up the column labels! What kind of amateur bull is that? And after so many people complaining about the shoes not fitting, you'd think they would figure out that whoever typed up their own size chart screwed it up EPICALLY. It's so so annoying. And I'm never ordering dance shoes online again. It only cost $4 more dollars to buy the same pair of shoes from a dancewear store, and they make sure the shoes fit correctly. It's worth every penny to not go through this mess again. ... show more

  • The medium width works fine in our case
Special Size: Toddler (1-4 Years) Size: 9 Toddler Color: Black Patent
Size up 1/2 size. I followed that direction after measuring the feet myself and following the chart carefully. I then sized up. The just they fit perfectly. They do not have room for a growth spurt but they are a correct fit. The medium width works fine in our case, however, if your child has wider feet it may be a good idea to choose a wider width because they do seem a little narrower than standard shoes. The shoes are Capezio, which is pretty standard and they are sturdy and comfortable (according to personal feedback). ... show more

  • Great shoes!
Special Size: Toddler (1-4 Years) Size: 9 Toddler Color: Black Patent
Great shoes. They look very pretty and with good quality. My girl loves them!!! The only thing is that they are too small. My kid is 5 years old. She wears 8. I ordered 9 and they were tight, good for a couple of weeks and then, throw them away. I exchange them for a 10 and they fit ok. They will last longer. Definitely recommend the product. Just be cautious about the size you order. ... show more
