For some reason I always thought it had real wood top. Maybe it's because of one of the reviews here. Well I was a bit disappointed once I found out it's laminated press board. The quality of this office set is "okay" for a home office. It's priced at what it's worth (not a great deal nor a bad deal). The desk can be easily scratched so be careful. Heavy with real wood top but had to modify drawers to fit properly. It is a shame, Amazon sells this set as separate pieces but Bush Industries will not allow any returns for any reason. When getting to our new space we found it smaller than what we were told, so we do not have the room for all the furniture. We even offered paying a restocking fee and they said no. ... show more

Overall - I was very impressed with this set. There was no damage to any of the pieces although there was one box with forklift damage to the cardboard. The pieces are much heavier than I anticipated and they look very good set up. I did give 4-stars for assembly because it did take two of us about 6 hours on the desk and about 4 hours for the hutch and it definitely takes two people (we are both 65+). The directions were excellent and we were only missing 2 little nails for the backing on the hutch and bookcase. It is not “real” wood so I gave 4-stars for sturdiness. I did a lot of shopping around before deciding on this set. I looked at real wood sets and they were running about 7500-12000. Other brands were about 2500 so I felt the value was very good. ... show more

Review is for the Fairview L Desk with hutch, Bookcase and File Cabinet. We were very impressed with the quality of this desk set, especially at the $1k price point. It can take a while to put together, and you will need some room to get the boxes taken apart and put together. A single individual can put it together, but having an extra set of hands for certain portions is probably best (like picking up the hutch to put on the desk surface). Please take note of the photo before you buy, it appears there are two different products, one with the hutch on the right, the other on the left. This desk is NOT REVERSIBLE. The one we got would only work with the hutch on the right, as the picture showed. Take your time with the file cabinet and be certain to install the guide rails prior to tightening the door cover! Our only complaint would be that the file cabinet tips forward when you open a drawer that is full, so it is best to put something heavy on top of it. Also the file cabinet doesn't have a drawer lock or a single drawer safety mechanism, so if you open both at the same time the entire cabinet can fall forward. Most lower cost file cabinets do this however, so its not a unique challenge and not a deal breaker. Also, you can consider leaving the undermount keyboard drawer off entirely. It is quite large and deep, and it interferes with the arms of most office chairs so that you cannot roll the chair under the desk. Every piece on our kit was labeled properly, but some labels were on edges so look closely. ... show more

I’m writing this review a little over one year after purchase. For our home office, I thought this was an ok purchase. I realized when I ordered that it wasn’t real wood but with us only using a few times a week I thought it’d be ok. Wrong. If you’re reading this planning to purchase, here’s some things to think about: 1. Do you have small children, messy teenagers or do people set drinks on your furniture and leave them? If a glass has condensation on it and they do not remove it from the desk top it will leave a bubbled up ring. 2. Are you particular about doors and drawers looking even when you put things together? 3. If someone sticks a piece of scotch tape to the surface of the desk it will peel the fake wood paper off and leave a white patch on the desk where the fake wood paper was. 4. The back board on the hutch is two pieces that do not lay flat and the crack between the pieces you can either try to fix yourself or hide it with something in front of it. If I could do it over, I would’ve saved my money for solid wood. If not for the surface issues and the look of the backer board on the hutch I would be ok with the desk.
