Description

Josh Volk, author of the best-selling Compact Farms, offers small-scale farmers an in-depth guide to building customized equipment that will save time and money and introduce much-needed efficiencies to their operations. Volk begins with the basics, such as setting up a workshop and understanding design principles, mechanical principles, and materials properties, then presents plans for making 15 tools suited to small-farm tasks and processes. Each project includes an explanation of the tool’s purpose and use, as well as the time commitment, skill level, and equipment required to build it. Projects range from the super-simple (requiring a half-day to build) to the more complex, and include how-to photographs and illustrations with variations for customizing the finished implement. Along with instructions for building items such as simple seedling benches, a mini barrel washer, a DIY germination chamber, and a rolling pack table, Volk addresses systems design for farm efficiency, including how to design an effective drip irrigation system and how to set up spreadsheets for collecting important planning, planting, and market data. • Nice selection of equipment/systems
I'd heard about Josh's book "Build Your Own Farm Tools" in a few farm groups. Since my husband & I own a small-scale farm I was curious if there would be anything of interest for us. When the opportunity arose to get a sneak peak I jumped at it. I believe in not reinventing the wheel whenever possible. To say I was impressed with this book is an understatement. With so many new people entering into farming, or growing food for their family, Josh does an excellent job going over basic safety, and wood/metal working for the novice. Josh gives a good run down of different tools that will be needed throughout the book. Many newbies may have to either purchase, rent or borrow some to get the job done. The plans included in this book are items such as seedling benches, germination chambers, hand cart, drip irrigation systems, spray table & more. Instructions are easy to follow with a good list of materials. He explained why he chose to build that particular item that way and other options that may work as well. You're always free to put your own spin to it. The approximate cost may be off due to the rising cost of building materials, but in today's world that's to be expected. Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from author/publisher for review purposes. ... show more

  • Tools anyone can build
The media could not be loaded. love this book! I want to do the Julie and Julia thing and work my way through it. Starts out with great info on different tools and then moves into projects I know we need. I love the cart made with bicycle tires, the seeding bench, the wash station and so much more!
