Necessary but overpriced. Durable though.

  • A Powerful and Versatile Little Engine
Style: Kids
This is a great train for little kids. It easily works great on the typical wooden train tracks and is powerful enough to go up and down the hills on the track set. We have had other train trains that have trouble getting up the hills so it was important to find one that was able to go up and down on its own. It will also run on other surfaces such as a floor or a firm rug if you don't have or want to use a track. It is able to go forward and backwards which is a great feature, but sometimes because of the switch being all in one place, our two-year-old is unable to turn it off because the off is in the middle of turning the switch to go forward or backward. We have run out a few batteries this way, when it was left on without our knowledge, which is easily remedied if you just check to make sure your little on has turned it off. This is truly the only downside to this product and eventually that won't be a problem anymore once he gets a little older. There is a magnetic hook up on the rear of the train so it can pull other pieces that have a similar magnetic hook up and we have gotten it to pull quite a few pieces as once because of its overall strength when it runs. Overall, I highly recommend this product for young children and older train lovers alike. We will definitely be buying more like it in the future. ... show more

  • A great little battery-powered toy engine!
Style: Kids
Bought this as a Christmas gift for our train-loving 2yo and I'm honestly impressed with it. It goes up all the hills we build with our hodgepodge train tracks that have been bought new, thrifted, and given to us, even when towing a car behind it. The battery has lasted fine so far, even when the 2yo leaves it running while playing with other toys (plus we have rechargeable batteries, so we're not super worried about it anyway). It only gets stuck or de-rails when the tracks aren't level, which happens occasionally on soft carpet and I fully expected. Some people don't like that the back wheels don't turn easily when it's switched off, but we've got so many other non-motorized toy engines that it doesn't bother us. If he wants to push a train engine around by hand, he's got about a dozen others to choose from. But when he wants to sit and watch the magic of a toy engine powering itself, well, he's got that now too. We love it and would definitely buy it again. ... show more

  • Buy lots of batteries to go with it!
Style: Kids
Buy lots of batteries to go with it! My kiddo loves his wooden train set so this was an obvious great addition. It took him a little bit to figure out to get the switch in the middle to the "Stop" position. It goes through plenty of batteries. Doesn't take long before the little engine that could... well, couldn't pull cars up the little hill anymore. ... show more

  • Fun for About Six Months
Style: Kids
Bought this for a three-year-old who is obsessed with trains. He was thrilled to have a powered engine. It didn't move very fast, and it didn't pull many cars, but just having it move by itself was a big thrill. Unfortunately, it ate batteries at an alarming speed. And after six months, the powered wheels stopped working. The wheel itself detached from the axle on the inside, so it would look like it was still working, but it would not move. There are better options. ... show more

  • Great well made product! So fun to watch!
Style: Kids
This train is too cute! I loved and ordered this because it had a light along with being able to go forward and reverse. My oldest step child who is 21 takes the opportunity when he can to put it in the track and we all watch in a trance as it goes around our pretty basic train table set up. I will say I love how the train handles hills. My husband has tried to attach other train cars and it only can pull 1-2 of them. We have another brand though and I think they are heavier so that may make a difference. I do also have a 2 year old and so far he hasn't really messed with it aside of when we say give it a nug to get it on the track again.( my husband glued the track down and some parts aren't aligned well) I want to buy the three piece set from Amazon that Brio makes because of how well this one has worked for us. ... show more

  • Switch is hard for toddler, but the engine is strong and works with IKEA tracks
Style: Kids
Pros: We were looking for a better engine after buying a motorized Percy (Thomas and Friends). Percy wasn't very strong and routinely gets stuck on the IKEA tracks because it sits too low. This one was perfect in that respect. Plus, it could easily pull our little one's 16 cars around the track and even up ramps! Cons: Slider switch is nearly impossible for my toddler to use because of the fact that it can go in reverse. Who cares about reverse? The off position is in the middle so he always slides past it when trying to turn it off. Also, why plastic? I suppose it doesn't matter too much, but die cast would have been nicer and given more weight for traction. ... show more
